Amb is hard to ignore. Scrying pool is hard to ignore with support. Amb/Scrying pool with support is.. well.. I've never ignored it before successfully :D

keep in mind that with a bit more support (see: villages), this probably would have failed horridly.

Yeah, with no Villages to play all those actions from SP, it's not that great.  Meanwhile an opponent's Amb enables your Gardens, and HT/Duke is a powerhouse combo.  I think you made by far the right call.

Never buy ambassador when gardens are in the game. Never buy an ambassador when duke is in the game. This game is absolutely not surprising for me.

Never is a pretty strong word. Gardens in particular still need decent support even if you do end up getting fed 7 or 8 cards. If there's any engine on the board, amb into engine will most certainly crush weakly supported alt vp. But this game, yeah there is no engine. So ambassador is bad.
