Tax Collector

Here's an idea that came out of modifying my Peddler variant from the rinkworks competition.

Tax Collector
$4 -- Action -- Attack

If you reveal and discard an Estate from your hand, each other player must discard a Treasure or reveal a hand with no Treasure.

+1 Card, +1 Action, +$1

===

Initially, I had the card reveal and discard a Province and it cost more, but that was deemed too weak by the community.  In modifying the card, my goal is to make the card into an attack that is sometimes better than Cutpurse (worse for the opponent), but most of the time worse (better for the opponent).  The matching with Estates to "activate" the attack sort of limits the power.

Any comments/ suggestions?

My first reaction is that +1 Card, +1 Action, +$1 all by itself has been pretty much universally considered to be fairly priced at $4. If you want to keep it costing $4 and add a benefit like an attack, I think you need to somehow weaken it; perhaps make part of the vanilla bonus conditional, like Tournament does.

I'd like it better as:

Tax Collector
$4 -- Action -- Attack

+1 Card, +1 Action

If you reveal and discard an Estate from your hand, each other player must discard a Treasure or reveal a hand with no Treasure, and +$1.

I Powerman's suggested change is good, it stops it from being overpowered. Some wording problems that should just be tweaked, though. It should probably say:

Tax Collector
$4 -- Action -- Attack

+1 Card, +1 Action

You may discard an Estate from your hand. If you do, each other player must discard a Treasure or reveal a hand with no treasure. If you discarded an Estate, +$1.

Cantrips are boring. How about +1 action, +$1 instead? Collector is an independent actor (like Minion) so doesn't use your attention, and always manages to bring SOMETHING back.

Great suggestions!

After I posted, I was thinking that it may be underpriced/overpowered as I posted (thinking about the Tournament comparison).  I love Powerman's suggestion and Jorbles clarification.

My idea with the name is that a Tax Collector needs something to levy the taxes on.  Hence, I really like the suggestion that if you reveal and discard an Estate, you get the +$1 bonus.  It sort of feels like a property tax... an estate tax, so to speak!  Although, it is weird that you tax your own Estates, and benefit from that... the analogy isn't perfect.

This is probably super-swingy but how about something like...

The opponent to your left reveals his hand. For each card revealed, if it is...
an Estate, you may gain a Copper.
a Duchy, you may gain a Silver.
a Province, you may gain a Gold.
a Colony, you may gain a Platinum.

Maybe gains in hand? (Maybe +1 Buy if so?) How much would this have to cost?

I love the idea.  It is super swingy though, and may be of positive value only in the late game or if your opponent is going on a Duke-Duchy rush.  Maybe there's a modification to make it work with Alt VP cards, too.

pretty straightforward modification, although it does increase the power on boards with kingdom treasure cards:

For each victory card revealed this way, (you may?) gain a treasure card costing less than that card.

went with costing less mainly so you can't just gain a Harem for each Harem they reveal, but hey, maybe you want that functionality.
