Update!
Training is going swimmingly (har). I've done my first 1/4 distance swim (6.2 miles / 10k) in lake water (warm compared to either channel - about 68 degrees) - and I made it through quite easily. I've done a 5k swim down in LA at Seal Beach - which is the same area that the Catalina Island Channel swim finishes. Again, the water felt warm, at a balmy 63 degrees. The water at that venue was really, really choppy (swells up to 5 feet), so even though it was short, it was a good experience.
For those of you familiar with the San Fransisco area, I'll be swimming my first 1/4 distance ocean water swim on August 9th, with the water closer to 58 degrees (similar to English Channel temperature) - when I jump off a boat at 7:30 AM under the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, and swim around San Fransisco to the Bay Bridge. Fun times!
After that, I am hoping to get down to San Diego in late September, to do the La Jolla 10-mile relay (as a solo swimmer), and by years end, I hope to do a width crossing of Lake Tahoe (12 miles), which is 1/2 distance, at altitude, in semi-chilly water (high 50's, low 60's).
Aaaand, that's pretty much it. I hope to do Catalina next summer, and the English Channel in 2016 - so things are looking good right now. I miss playing all my forum games with you guys though! I see the Forum Game community has passed the 2 year mark - so there's hope yet that in another 2, I'll be finished with all my adventures, and I'll find myself some time to relax once more!
Update again!
The Bridge to Bridge swim went wonderfully. I finished the 10k swim in 1 Hour, 22 minutes - which is blisteringly fast. I was swimming at about 2.5mph, and the currents were pushing me another 2mph.
Still, I didn't swim a great line, and was probably 5 minutes off where I should've been. 1:13:00 was the fastest male finisher, and two time Olympian Golda Marcus finished in 1:09:00.
I also met the co-owner of the La Jolla swim, and he informed me that it (sadly) will not be running this year. Ah well. 77 degree water sounded fabulous.
In other swimming news, I will be swimming across lake Tahoe in less than a month! September 15th to be exact. I still need to book a boat (unless any of you happen to know an owner on the lake?), but I've got a pilot, nutritionist and observer. I'm on the fence at the moment on doing a width crossing (11.5 miles) vs a length crossing (21.5 miles)... I -know- that I can complete the former, but I'm a little terrified of the latter.
So... That's what's going on. I've been playing some Dominion recently with my box sets, but that's about it for my gaming life. Some Pandemic + Expansions as well. Nothing too exciting. If there's ever a meetup here on the West Coast, someone send me a PM so that I don't miss it! I'm sure I could schedule some time away to meet all my favorite peoples.
