I am V/LA from this Friday through Sunday.  My sister is graduating, then my mom.  Then my Eagle Court of Honor is on Monday (but I'm still open in the morning and afternoon).

Full V/LA this week-end because I'll be at Paris Est Ludique (board game con) and seeing old friends.

VLA from Tuesday through Monday for a vacation. Will have occasional access but not a lot.

Also probably semi-VLA until then with a sick baby and working.

I'm going to have very little time for posting this weekend, I might check in once or twice but there's a good chance that I won't have time to until Sunday.

I have a week-long VLA coming up in the middle of July, the 8th through the 13th for a roadtrip/vacation. I'll do my best to post during that time but I probably won't get online more than once a day.

Update!

Training is going swimmingly (har). I've done my first 1/4 distance swim (6.2 miles / 10k) in lake water (warm compared to either channel - about 68 degrees) - and I made it through quite easily. I've done a 5k swim down in LA at Seal Beach - which is the same area that the Catalina Island Channel swim finishes. Again, the water felt warm, at a balmy 63 degrees. The water at that venue was really, really choppy (swells up to 5 feet), so even though it was short, it was a good experience.

For those of you familiar with the San Fransisco area, I'll be swimming my first 1/4 distance ocean water swim on August 9th, with the water closer to 58 degrees (similar to English Channel temperature) - when I jump off a boat at 7:30 AM under the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, and swim around San Fransisco to the Bay Bridge. Fun times!

After that, I am hoping to get down to San Diego in late September, to do the La Jolla 10-mile relay (as a solo swimmer), and by years end, I hope to do a width crossing of Lake Tahoe (12 miles), which is 1/2 distance, at altitude, in semi-chilly water (high 50's, low 60's).

Aaaand, that's pretty much it. I hope to do Catalina next summer, and the English Channel in 2016 - so things are looking good right now. I miss playing all my forum games with you guys though! I see the Forum Game community has passed the 2 year mark - so there's hope yet that in another 2, I'll be finished with all my adventures, and I'll find myself some time to relax once more!

Nice!  Did you ever set up a website describing your training process?

Nice!  Did you ever set up a website describing your training process?

I haven't, although I've been recording everything in a log - so it's just a matter of actually putting it up. My standard week right now looks something like this though:

Monday Morning: Masters Swim/Ocean Swim (alternating weeks):
2-3 Miles (3.3k-4.8k), or about an hour to an hour and a half. Masters swims are shorter set based, pushing for speed, and Ocean Swims are usually focused on increasing stroke cadence.

Monday Evening: Masters Swim:
2 Miles (3.3k), just over an hour. Like Monday morning, this swim is all about shorter individual sets and sprints to push speed.

Tuesday: Off

Wednesday: Distance Swim:
This swim ranges from 10k to 15k, straight swimming. This swim is 2 1/2 - 4 hours in length.

Thursday: Light Swim:
My muscles are usually feeling a little bruised from Wednesday's swim, so I swim rather slowly on Thursday. The point here is just to get in and swim while I'm sore, as at some point no matter how tired and hurt I'm feeling, I'm going to need to keep swimming. This is a very casual swim, 2 miles (3.3k).

Friday: Repeat Monday Evening+:
I'll take whatever workout I swam on Monday, and add to each individual set. Usually it's half-again what I swim in the Evening, with a focus on reducing my rest time between each set. So high heart rate for longer times, with less rest. Ends up around 4k total.

Saturday/Sunday:
One day I'll take off, and the other I'll repeat my Thursday swim. Light workout, rest, recover, and get ready for the following week. Another 3.3k.

---

In total, it's between 25k-32k a week. It'll continue to build as my event swims get longer, but even at maximum, I'll top out at around 45k per week. I'll drop one of my two "light" workouts, and instead switch it to another distance swim (open water where possible). It still leaves me at 2 complete rest days per week, which is plenty to let my body recover and the muscle build.

In all honesty, it's nothing special. As long as I make sure that I'm eating 3 full meals each day, I'm usually good. My daily deficit in calories on Monday/Wednesday/Friday (longer/harder swims) is between 6,000-8,000. The big things that I've cut out of my diet are beer (except on a rare occasion) and pizza (mmm). Really though, it's just about eating relatively healthy. Having a burger once or twice a week isn't going to kill me, or sharing in on some bacon cheese fries. But I also have my share of Southwest Chicken Salads, or your standard veggie type mixes (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Squash, Asparagus, etc). For the most part, I eat what I feel like, within reason. No ridiculous super-deep-fried-three-times-heart-attack-bombs.

Just FYI, I will be V/LA for 'Murica's birthday as I will be spending the weekend (starting tonight) with my girlfriend's family, far from my sweet, sweet computer.

I will try to read from my phone but I make no guarantees.

I remember my forum activity spiking like crazy after getting mine out -- I didn't want to go out but sitting on my laptop was perfect. So maybe that will happen to you!

Good luck, I hope it's not too painful
