Clasic_Cards #8 - Hanging Gardens

Hanging Gardens (5)
Victory
Worth 1 VP for every 3 cards in your deck costing $5 or more.

  • I initially wanted to make a card that counted the total cost of all cards in your deck, then divided them by some number I hadn't yet determined. While I still like that idea, it's a lot of busy work just to end the game.
  • Hanging Gardens are quite the posh and ornate treatment for a palace. They exude a wealthy fragrance and bloom only in green and gold.

I actually quite like this. Not sure on actual numbers, but it is a alternative VP that works differently than Gardens or Silk gardens - I.E. you cannot just pile out easily by buying crap.

So more like Duke but than, i think it requires better economy to make it work.

I do like that you can't just drain a $2 pile to rush it, but you've basically created something that's strictly superior to Duke at the same price level:

Duke ($5) - Worth 1 VP for every 3 Duchies (which cost $5).

Hanging Gardens ($5) - Worth 1 VP for every 3 cards costing $5 or more.

So that's kind of a big problem, albeit fixable in some way, I'm sure.  You change the price and/or the payout.
Not sure if having them count themselves is more or less interesting than otherwise.

Uh, duke gives you a point for EVERY duchy, not every 3?

Hey, you're right!  No problem after all!

What the heck was I thinking?  Probably that the ideal split is 3 more Duchies than Dukes.

Technically, the ideal split is to have from 2 to 4 more Duchies than Dukes!

Do you mean during the game or after? The latter shouldn't be a problem, so I assume you mean the latter. It would make point counting a bit strenuous. If you've ever played an all-green set-up, you'll know how bad it can really get.

I love University to the extent that I severely overplay it, but Hanging Gardens would make up for it.  Use the Universities for power 5's and the money for Hanging Gardens.  Horde becomes another great support card for it.  Not only do the Golds help you keep buying Hanging Gardens, they also help make the Hanging Gardens more valuable.  But then again, any buy spent on a Horde isn't getting a Hanging Garden.

I wonder if the number of $5's for a VP needs to increase, but playtesting would clear that up quickly.  Really, without University support, you probably aren't getting more than one $5 card per turn anyway, since you'll be greening early to pick up your share of Hanging Gardens.  But they'll get up to Duchy value pretty quick.  Probably surpass it in most games with at least one or two good $5's.

If you find they are too good at 3 per VP, they can either stop counting each other, or bump it up to 4 per VP.  Then you might have the sad problem of them being worth less than Duchies though :)

At one point, I considered costing this at (4) and being worth 1 VP per every two cards costing $5+. That seemed needlessly self defeating, though, and very unlike Gardens (which is obviously the card's base theme).

I really like this card. Combos well with KC/X. Also Peddler. And it is generally a good card to pick up overall if you are not playing some quick VP rush.

Anything that can gain cards costing $5 or more make it awesome.

Border Village!, Haggler, Uni, Jester.. Maybe even Smugglers :D
Quarry and Peddlers too.

This was great - pre-coffee internet browsing, thinking, OK, clearly there's something wrong with rinkworks' argument, cause he struck it out, but man, I can't see it. OK, don't scroll down, think about it, think about it, no, that argument is perfect, I don't get it.
