Yes, that other topic inspired me to post this. Basically, I've ordered my first ever smartphone over the weekend. It's an Android one and will be delivered tomorrow (24/07/2012). What gaming-related Apps should I be getting ASAP?

Androminion is a nice holdover until Goko for Android comes out.  I have the Android version of Plants vs. Zombies, and it's pretty good, though missing features from the PC version.

Honestly, I mostly use my Kindle app for entertainment on the thing, so I couldn't tell you too many games.

I haven't had much experience of board games on Android, but Androminion is kind of nice for killing time.

Just tried Androminion and crushed the AI. Looks like he plays strong BM and eats dust if you have any engine skills whatsoever. Got the Dominion Card Selector while I was at it. This will be boss for making kingdoms with the random expansions me and my friends put together.

Yeah, the AI is pretty weak, just wait until you get a Torturer Chain going. Then you can do pretty much whatever you want.

The Tichu app is outstanding.  It is my sole focus on every commute.

Blokish is Blokus.  Condado is San Juan.

I've had a look at (and subscribed to) both of these geeklists:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/72020/android-versions-of-actual-boardgames
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/54397/games-for-android-devices

But there's a lot there for someone who's never touched a smartphone before to be choosing from.

I do like the look of Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth for a quick free time-filler. Will probably get Durch die Wuste too. Other than that... I've got no idea.

Also, any general apps at all that come under the category of "Every smartphone owner needs this"?

Also, any general apps at all that come under the category of "Every smartphone owner needs this"?

Yelp (for business reviews; Monocole feature lets you scan places nearby)
Maps/Navigator (Should be built in)
Call History (Lets you check your call history while on the phone, normally something you can't do on an Android)
Alarm Clock Xtreme (Makes you do math to turn it off.  Works wonders if you're as lazy as me)
ASTRO (Lets you navigate your device in a folder format.  Must-have, IMO)
ColorNote (Great for shopping lists)
Music Players I like: GoneMAD (has random album feature), PlayerPro (nice otherwise).  Both of those cost money but have free trials.  Cubed/3 is a good free one.
Kindle (should be built in?)
Reader (for Google Reader if you use it)
Skype
Swype if you find typing individual letters cumbersome like I do.

As a general rule: Not sure if you've used a smartphone before, but there's definitely a learning curve involved if you haven't.  Some apps might seem crappy at first but will make sense as you adjust to the device.

A ton of games are on the market and there are plenty more being added as we speak.  Though there are only a few ones that really stand out.  And personally, it really depends on what games and types you are interested with.  I have to admit, the games over iTunes are a lot better and comes in huge numbers, but I think that Android will soon follow suit.

I have to say that I am really quite pleased with One Epic Knight as a time killer.

I looked it up at first because a friend of mine helped develop it. I figured I could throw in a couple of bucks his way. Oh, wait, it's a free app for the Android. Nice. Ah gee, another running game. Hmm, but this running game gives me some decent options. And it has some hidden items.

So, yeah, I've been playing One Epic Knight a lot and not just because a friend of mine was involved with it. I'm legitimately having fun with it.

I also played Jetpack Joyride. It's another running game which is amusing, but it's not anything extraordinary. At least that one's free too.

I must tag this thread.  In the off-chance that my phone ever becomes smart.

Once you switch, it'll be hard to switch back. I just hope I never run into a financial situation where I have to choose to give up my smart phone.

Having a computer in your pocket is very, very handy.

The topic title made me wonder if you were going to recommend Android, Netrunner or Infiltration. I was confused by the content for a few seconds.

...spin-offs are still better for all of the previously cited reasons.
But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Are these apps still relevant, or what are the must-haves these days?

I strongly recommend Pocket Trains if you ever liked simulators.

As far as board games on android:
They now have:
Ticket to ride
Neuroshima Hex
I thought I had more on my phone, but nope, that's about it as far as board games go...

Tower Madness is a really good tower defense game that was recently brought to android (if you're into that kind of thing)

Final Fantasy Dimensions is pretty great if you are a big fan of FF5 like I am.
