So, Swedish Nationals is being held this weekend. Long story short, this year there won't be any prize support going towards sending the winner to Worlds, like last year (when it was held in Germany). This is a shame, obviously, as it probably means we won't be sending anyone (flights across the Atlantic are kinda pricey). I was wondering, though, if there are any prizes at Worlds this year? I'm not counting on it, but if they were somewhat significant, maybe they would provide a decent incentive for me, or others, to go, should they win. Assuming there are no prizes of note, it's a pretty difficult trip to justify, especially with only a month's notice. I'm guessing the amount of people showing up to Nationals this weekend who are planning to going to Worlds, should they win, is somewhere between 0 and 1.

Any other info on Worlds would be cool btw, like what date it's actually being played, what format it will be, etc.

Gen Con is Aug 16-19th. I would bet the tournament would not happen kn the first of last day (if it's anything like other events I've seen)

Which means likely aug 17 or 18 (or both)

I haven't heard anything re prizes, but I would bet the first prize will be smaller than the airfare from Sweden to Indy...

Heh yeah I'm not exactly expecting to turn a profit on my trip to Gencon, but the difference between something decentish and "congrats on winning Worlds, here's a Dominion expansion of your choice!" is potentially pretty big

The first prize (and only, as we have assumed other sponsors would pay trip expenses as we do) is $1000.

Thanks a lot theory (and Jay), that's not bad at all, if a bit top heavy Here's hoping for a European destination next year, or "other sponsors" who actually sponsor!

The thing is that the swedish version of the game (base only) didn't really sell well. Probably because there were like four expansions and a fifth on the way in English. The company don't want to put too much money into supporting a game that hardly sells. Which I don't really think is that bad. A trip to Essen fron Sweden is one thing. A trip to GenCon costs a lot more. Probably something like seven times as much. Hopefully there will be swedish sponsors next year. Regarldless, I still hope we will have some good games on sunday so that I can fell like I've actually fought for the title this year too.

As you might have read on facebook, I was on the fence about going at all. With a decent first prize at Worlds, I guess I can at least pretend like I'm considering going to gencon if I win (in reality it's not happening though), so I'm probably showing up on Sunday Wouldn't want you to win without opposition!
