I almost resurrected this thread this weekend!

Tonight I made myself a White Russian. Made it a BIT strong.

while you were drinking it, did two guys (one named woo) break into your house, pee on your rug, stick your head down the toilet and ask you where the money was? Or are white russians the absolutel only thing you have in common with the dude?

The only OTHER thing I have in common with the dude is that I have not seen The Big Lebowski (Coen Brothers, 1998).

Yeah, that hits all the major plot points.

I've been known to drink White Russians only because of my love of The Big Lebowski. I drink Sarsaparilla for the same reason.

Yes. Because that's a good one.

Hmmm. Bump.

Anyone enjoy a nice smoky scotch? Lagavulin, or Ardbeg, perchance?

How about a Laphroaig?
love laphroaig, though ive only had the quarter cask. I think there's a laphroaig 10 in the house somwhere, I'll probably be opening it soon.
Pretty good.  Right now I have a Chivas Mizunara blend that I got in Japan; enjoying that too.

better than the regular chivas 12? I mean, chivas is pretty decent, but it doesn't compare to a laphroaig quarter cask.

I just tried some of the last of a bottle of Nikka 21. It's pretty spectacular if you ever get the opportunity/have someone nice enough to buy you a glass.

I have extremely limited experience with Japanese whisky. I've tasted hibiki 12 once and didn't think much of it. If you've had that, how does this compare?

I can't speak to this much as I've never had Hibiki 12, but the Nikka 21 is reputed to be much better? The Nikka I can only say was one of the best whiskies I've had, but I'm not a super experienced whisky drinker.

I know the nikka 21 is probably a much higher class whisky, it's just a lot of things about it will probably remind me of hibiki more than of anything else, partially because my spectrum of Japanese whisky is narrow. Like, if I've only had two bourbons ever, they'd taste similar even if within the bourbon sphere they're very different.

I would say it was most comparable to scotches I've had in the past, when I'm comparing. Smoother scotches though, I would not describe it as peaty or smoky.

What are good not-smokey scotches?  Like far away from smokey.

Macallan would be what I'd think of (it's what my dad drinks when he's feeling fancy so I'm pretty familiar with it). Glenmorangie 10 is quite nice and smooth (and I've tried it and would agree).  I've heard that Dalwhinnie is incredibly smooth if you've had that (but I have not).

how much are you willing to spend? Under $100 (and there's no real reason to spend more), I would recommend balvenie 14 Caribbean cask. Under $50 and I'd probably say glengoyne 12. Don't get an older glengoyne, they don't really get better with age. But I would really recommend you give smoky scotch another try. Not necessarily something REALLY smokey like ardbeg or laphroaig, but something a little smokey like maybe lagavulin or johnny walker double black.

Eh, I just don't like smokey taste.  Smoked meats, cheeses, etc. bother me.  It feels like my throat and esophagus close up.

well, alright then. Balvenie 14 Caribbean is really good and not smokey at all. So I guess try that. Unless I'm forgetting something, nothing I've had really comes close to it in that category.

Yup!  I got the Chivas Mizunara in Japan while we were on our honeymoon.  We also climbed Mount Fuji, but had to stop short of the summit because of bad weather.
