The store I went to didn't have Glengoyle, so I picked up Glen Garioch 12 (was around $55).  They did have Balvenie, but the 12 (at around $80 or $90) and the 15 (at around $130).  Not sure if they are as good as the suggested one, and seemed a bit too expensive.

I'll try a taste of the Glen Garioch later.
glengoyne not glengoyle.
And so those are awful prices :-\, like, Manhattan prices or something.
I've never had Glen Garioch.
The Balvenie 12 is good but not worth that amount of money. The 15 I've never had.

I meant Glengoyne; they didn't have that.  Prices are pretty bad.. I live right outside if Manhattan, basically just as expensive.

Glen Garioch was pretty good; very flavourful.  I don't have a sophisticated enough pallet to describe it, but it was interesting.

ah... well, if you ever find yourself in Flatbush, try one of the liquor stores down there. They usually have decent prices.

Was just given a bottle of Booker's for a present! It's supposed to be top notch bourbon so I'm looking forward to trying it.

Nice! Yes it's quite good, maybe add a drop of water though. It's one of the few whiskeys I prefer to add water to.

Went to a liquor store today but they were sold out of balvenie 14. Basically the only thing in the store that was sold out. Also, they sell it for $70 which is basically the cheapest around.

Wow you weren't kidding. It's really strong at bottle strength.

yeah if you're used to ~40% stuff, then the first thing you taste when booker's hits your mouth is alcohol. But once you get used to that strength/add water, it's a pretty good whiskey. I do consider it overpriced though. Wild turkey rare breed is also a cask strength bourbon that's significantly cheaper and of comparable quality.

I've had Bastille, which was at that time marketed as French bourbon (a misnomer in its own right), not whiskey.  I found it quite foul, but again, I was misled from the beginning, and was expecting bourbon.  The casks it is finished in show their presence  in the nose, on the palate, and throughout the finish.  I took my bottle back for a refund.  YMMV.
I just bought another bottle of bastille, and it was really an awful experience. Completely different from my first bottle. This one tasted all artificial, and overwhelmingly bubblegummy. I can't say enough about how bad it was. I went back to the first bottle which I had already finished and smelled it to confirm that the discrepancy was between those two bottles and not through my changing pallate and there was really no resemblance. I did notice that my original bottle was bottled in 2013 and the new one was bottled in 2011. But my point is, I apologize if anyone bought this on my recommendation, I no longer stand by it. But if you find one bottled in 2013, it might be good.

I just tasted the first smoky scotch I didn't like: Ardbog. It's a special edition Ardbeg that really is pretty terrible. Not old enough, strong enough, smoky enough, and somewhat foul. And I absolutely love Uigeadail and Corryvreckan

Eggnog season.  I had some with Maker's Mark the other night that was excellent.  What I am curious about though is what people think goes best with eggnog.  I know, eggnog is delicious without any extra ingredients, but then you don't get the added benefits from the alcohol.

I'm in a bar now, finishing my third local IPA, a really nice one. I think if I get one more I'll be home just in time to watch Stef's match. Or just go home right now? Nah, that is strictly inferior.

Taking about drinking in random stuff reminded me: crown royal regal apple. Delicious. Mix with some cranberry juice and it is just a delicious cran-apple drink.

This thread is almost 3 years out of date. Sad!

Well, on top of my craft beer problem, I’ve recently been getting into cocktails. I’ve set myself up with just about everything a home bar could possibly want (and then some!) and have gotten to playing around with various liquors.

Right now I’m favoring Angel’s Envy for a Rye Whiskey (delicious on it’s own, magnificent in a traditional Whiskey Sour), Woodford’s Reserve Bourbon (Just so damn smooth. Currently my top choice for making my go-to drink: A Paper Plane), Hennessy VSOP for Cognac, Uncle Val’s for a Botanical Gin, simple Bombay Sapphire for London Dry. I’ve got White Rum, Spiced Rum, Traditional Vodka, Green Chile Vodka, Citrus Vodka... - and all the Apertif’s, Digestif’s and bitters you can imagine.

For the Holiday’s I’ve been making a lot of Eggnog’s - I’ve been alternating between a Maraschino Liquor recipe and a Blanco Creme De Cacao recipe - the latter probably being more of an Alexander.

Any other cocktail drinkers around these days? And favorite drinks/choices to mix?

Old fashioneds are also my go to but I have recently been getting more into Moscow mules. I actually found a restaurant that made a Crown Royal Apple Mule and my goodness was it delicious. Crown royal apple, sour apple liqueur, lime juice and ginger beer. Any vodka cocktails that aren’t overly sweet would be appreciated my wife doesn’t like dark liquor but I haven’t come up with anything that isn’t vodka + juice.

Hey, joth is back!

I threw a cocktail party a few months ago and made huge batches of whiskey smashes (the signature cocktail from my wedding), mai tais, and a sort of paloma-type thing with an IPA float that came out really delicious. I tend to wildly swing between trying to make precise versions of classic cocktails and inventing my own with whatever I have on hand. Mixed results on both counts.

Since my wife got pregnant I've been leaning more into beer, though. My local bottle shop sells a beer advent calendar that I ended up with two of as gifts from people, so I've been working my way through those. A Metropolitan Dunkel Rye and a Half Acre IPL were standouts so far.

Also, congrats on the upcoming little one!

Old Fashioned is the best fashioned.

Are you in the NYC area? If so I recommend going to Amor Y Amargo; they have an entirely bitters-inspired cocktail list, and they rotate the menu a few times a year.

That used to be my go-to order at bars and when out with friends until I began mixing and trying so many other drinks. Nothing wrong with an Old Fashioned though!

I’m in milkshake IPA (hazy IPA treated with lactose....so freaking good) frame of mind this spring, but the only one I have easy access to is Odell’s Cloud Catcher (solidly good).

If y’all see a milkshake IPA out in the world, lemme know!
