I'll drink the occasional beer, but I think that Dominion goes best with tea.

It's quite enjoyable.

I am aces at this sport. My PR's are quite respectable, both with beer and liquor, and occasionally both.

I'm even competing as we speak!

Axxle, kudos on this extension topic. +1.

It's quite enjoyable.

For the record:

I am a Hops man when it comes to beer. The more, the better. Any Double or Triple IPA is going to be right down my alley.

I enjoy a good Red, and the occasional Brown Ale, but am only so-so on Stouts (It has to be REALLY rich). I generally do NOT like anything that is brewed with any sort of citrus, or Apricot/Cherry/etc. The fruit flavor just doesn't meld well for me.

-Edit- Some of the Irish Milk Stouts are REALLY, REALLY delicious.

I enjoy straight Whiskey, G&T, or any combination of clear liquor + citrus (preference to Lime over Lemon). My Martinis are as dry as they come, with an onion, not an olive.

And for those who don't know: You NEVER shake clear liquor. You'll bruise it and ruin it. So no James Bond in here.

Im on the ciders at the moment ( not literally this moment of course, its 11am!!)

Rekorderlig seems to be the current favourite. Ive gone off lager for the moment and never really been into Ale. Although Vodka +coke/redbull/orange is always good!

I enjoy a good tipple now and then.

My taste in beer tends to run towards stouts and Belgian-style ales: I tend to like dark beers with spicy and roasty flavors the most.  I do like hops but I also want to taste the malt, too.  I do like most beers- pretty much the only things I don't care for are pale lagers (I'd rather it taste like something) and certain wheat beers (some of them taste like banana, which just seems wrong).

Not much of a wine drinker.  I prefer my wine dry when I do have it, which is not that often.

I am getting to be a big fan of cocktails and spirits, too.  My taste in mixed drinks is pretty much opposite to Galzria, in that lemon juice is probably the #1 turn-off for me, and I like my martinis to be recognizably vermouthy.  (Though he is absolutely right about when you should shake and when you shoud stir).  Though to be honest sweet vermouth is much better than dry vermouth, so I tend to drink things like Manhattans and Negronis instead.  As much as I'm not a huge hop-head, I really like bitters in cocktails.  If I'm drinking spirits straight it's probably whiskey; I'd love to get into Scotch someday but I don't have the budget for that now.

Oh I disagree! Taste is very much the driving factor. If I don't enjoy it, I won't drink it. Take Jagermeister for example. Yuch.

I would probably drink ~half as much as I do now if all I was ever allowed to drink was something thats really not my favourite (say jagermeister). However, I dont really LIKE any of the stuff I drink, I just pick the least bad of the options to get drunk. While I prefer to drink better tasting stuff, I dont really drink because I want the test. I want the effect.

I don't drink for the taste of alcohol specifically, but for what other flavors come with the alcohol as a result of fermentation, aging, and infusion.  Getting a buzz is a nice side effect, too, but I don't drink to get drunk.  Outgrew that freshman year of college.

There's a reason vanilla extract is like 40% alcohol- because it's such a good solvent for flavor compounds.

Well I suppose that's more or less what I meant. I drink for the taste, for flavor. Not "alcohol" specifically - which is why my choice in beers is fairly specific.

If I'm out drinking at a club (very rare), MAYBE it's to get drunk and dance/party/grind the night away, but mostly I drink to enjoy the beverage, not the buzz.

I enjoy fancy IPA beers, and single malt scotches.

My favorite of the former is Southern Tier 2x IPA.  I'm drinking a 90 minute dogfish head right now.  I have a case of Heady Topper (if you're ever in vermont and can try this out - its amazing!) in my basement.

Tonight - I will be trying Stone's 10th Anniversery Ruination IPA - which I'm really excited about.

On the scotch front, my favorite drinking scotch is Oban 14.

Just had two bottles of 10th anniversary last weekend. It was good... Smoother than the standard, not quite as hoppy. Certainly not bad though!

90 minute is too sweet for my tastes. Actually, that's true of many Dogfish Head. I love their unique style, and will try everything they produce, but I haven't found one I love. I've heard the 120 is much hoppier than the 90, but we don't get it out in California. :'(

OTOH, I live an hour from Bear Republic, Lagunitas, Russian River, and many others, so I can't complain TOO much.

Oh, Stone has a new Triple IPA out! I haven't been able to get my hands on some yet, but have been considering driving down south to Escondido to visit the brewhouse!

I haven't had the 90 minute in a while - and I think I agree with your assessment.  The 120 minute is way too much for me... and the fact that each 12 oz bottle costs $10 doesn't help.

You probably can't get Southern Tier on the left coast, but if you're ever in the NE area - its worth checking out.  Delicious!

IPAs are one type of beer I really don't like; I've tried several of them but I often can't finish them.  My tastes tend more towards dark beers or "red" beers.  Although my go-to cheap beer is Rolling Rock.

(They've started selling Yuengling in Ohio so when I go back there I can get some regularly...)

I wish i could remember who it was - (reasonably high level fellow) who went on a diatribe against me when I said that Yuengling was my goto cheap beer.  He worked for sam adams, and went on about how Yuengling was just as bad as Bud / Coors etc., but manages to cultivate a semi-craft vibe.

He started talking about different hops varieties and the cheap hops that most american brewers use vs. the expensive hops that Sam Adams uses  - and despite enjoying beer - I didn't know anything about it and kindof lost interest.

My viewpoint was that Yuengling was tasty among cheap beers.... and sam adams was fine - but if I"m going to pay for my beer - then i'm usually buying micro brew.

If you're out there friend - would you like to teach me about hops varieties and why sam adams is the real king of beers?

See, I found it lacked the umph of a good 'ol regular bottle of Ruination. It certainly doesn't seem to shock the palate in the same way. It was still enjoyable. In the Racer-5 (my go-to beer) category, but not up to Racer-X or just Ruination.

I've heard good things about Knee-Deep, but haven't been able to try it. Anybody  get a chance? It comes from the North Bay (San Francisco), but is back ordered everywhere I go even in these parts (~45 minutes south of SF).

Following up on another post you made elsewhere, the 10.8% is on the high end (most of what I drink is 8% - 11.5% range), but I dunno. It didn't really jump out at me. I opened with that Friday night and followed it up with Ruination, Sumtin' Sumtin' (not my favorite, but not bad), Racer-5, Ruination, and finished with Hops-on-Rye. The 10th anniversary just... Felt like it had the smallest kick of the group (I'll admit, I split the 22 oz though (11 each) so maybe I didn't appreciate it fully).

Well - that sounds like quite the night.  After the child and a year of living in the burbs, my tolerance is reduced.  A 90 minute + this 22oz 10.8%, and I'm ready to party!

It's a shame you're on left coast - sounds like I'd like to try some of these fancy IPAs that I've never heard of.

I'm just glad someone on these forums shares and appreciates the same style of beverage as I do. ;)

I'll usually have one beer Sunday afternoon, two Saturday evening, and if I'm going to get drunk it's Friday night. I don't drink at all during the week.

All of these beers are widely available on the East coast and with the exception of the the 10th Anniv. have been for years.

Lagunitas has been around for an exceptionally long time. Bear Republic has been around for a few years at least. Port Brewing is much less available since a year or so ago when I dropped out of the scene but it can be found. If you have specialty beer shops in your area it is usually best to see if the brewing company is on their distributor's list and if so then move towards requesting they procure specific beers. I have been fortunate enough to live near 3 outstanding specialty beer shops; Peabody's in Boone, NC, City Beverage in Winston-Salem, NC and Bruisin' Ales in Asheville, NC. Also, Total Wine is an area chain that can and usually does carry all of the above brewers' beers (and the listed beers are flagship products, really).

Fat Tire isn't my favorite brewer, but I'll drink their brews. They certainly aren't terrible (sadly empty atm):

Fat Tire is apparently using the same yeast in all of their beers because they all have the same biscuity flavor that I found cloyingly annoying after the 1st one or two I tried. It may be the water over there in Fort Collins but the flavor is distinctly yeast phenol. Additionally, they are opening a new brewery in Asheville, NC so I suspect for consistency's sake the water is probably RO or something.

I drink anything that has any alcohol content in it. I have a long list of preferences, but, in the end, everything goes.

Tried to stay clear from this thread though.

-Edit- Some of the Irish Milk Stouts are REALLY, REALLY delicious.

This. Ever had the Left-Handed Milk Stout? I also like Cream Ales for a treat, especially Boddington's.

Love Blue Moon, but feel a little dirty about it since I found out how phony it is. And Fat Tire, Newcastle, Yeungling when I'm poor.

It's absolutely about the taste though. There's nothing pleasant about being drunk (and if you don't believe me, ask a glass of water).

I used to go through phases where I would drink loads of one drink (JD+coke, Tequila, Jaegerbombs) when out

Now I only seem to drink Cider or wine it seems!

Living on the west coast is a dream for micro-brew drinking.  Russian River, 3rd St Aleworks (very local), Lagunitas on tap nearly everywhere...

Like it so much it inspired me to start brewing my own.  Any other beer drinkers take the plunge and start brewing?

Vermont Brewfest was awesome.... it will now be an annual thing for me

For galzria - here is a list of all of the beers that I tried:

The Alchemist
Heady Topper - American Double IPA - 8% - There is a reason why these guys had the longest line and this beer is the only one to receive a perfect 100 from beer advocate.  Better on tap than it is from the can.

Fiddlehead Brewery
Fiddlehead IPA - American IPA - 6.2% - Uneventful - but I love IPAs
MotherGoose - Collaboration with Angel City - Wheat / Honey / Gooseberries - 6.4% - High Gravity wheat beer -> gross

Harboon Brewery
Leviathan Imperial IPA - 10% - Too much
Imperial Red Squared 9.2% - This one was much better
IPA - 5.9% I can get this normally in bottles - its fine
Rich and Dan's RYE IpA - 6.9% - This was surprisingly good

Hill Farmstead Brewery
Edward - American Pale Ale - 5.2% - After all of the IPAs - this just tasted bland

Lawson's Finest Liquids
Double Sunshine IPA - 8% - This was another brewery with a ridiculous line - and this IPA was gone before the end of the night.  It was fine - but it didn't warrant the line IMHO.  This was actually the first beer that I had - so I know that my reaction wasn't tainted.  If anything, I should have liked it more after standing in the hot sun for an hour.

McNeil's Brewery
Dead Horse IPA - 6.5% - Pretty conventional IPA.  I wish I had tried the sunshine IPA - which allegedly had hints of mango and pineapple.

Otter Creek Brewing Co
Black IPA - 6% - Didn't stand out as much as you'd expect.

Rock Art Brewery
I wanted to try their pumpkin imperial spruce stout - but it was gone.  Had their IPA (6%) instead.  At this point in the evening I could confirm that it was indeed an IPA

Non Vermont Brewers

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co.
Captains Reserve Imperial IPA - 8% - one of my last beers - but I enjoyed it

Founders Brewing Company
Centennial IPA - 7.2% - Just fine
Curmudgeon - 9.8% - I sipped some of my wifes.  Delicious
Devil Dancer - Triple IPA - 12% - They didn't open this keg until halfway through - so I wasn't exactly unbiased reviewing at this point.  It still made a strong impression.

IPSwitch
IpA - 6.3% - This was one of the only things that I didn't enjoy.  They advertised it as a cross between English and American IPAs.  It has a frowny face next to it.

Portsmouth Brewery
Bottle Rocket IPA - I had a choice of getting the normal, or a cask version collabortion with another brewery.  I naturally elected for the cask - and while I could taste the vanilla notes that they told me I would experience - and I noticed the difference in natural carbonation - If i could do it again, I would have had the regular.

Stone Brewing Co
They were just down to the Stone IPA and the Stone Cali-Belgique IPA.  I had the regular stone IPA, which I've had plenty of times - but never on tap.  It was just fine.

I probably had some others that I didn't mark down - and I sipped a bunch of beers that other people had, but only one other stood out

Bobcat Cafe and Brewery
saison de cassis (6.2%) - Tranlation: A Season of Blackcurrants.  The guidebook says: This belgian-inspired farmhouse style is brewed with barley from belgium, hops from the usa and germany, and yeast cultivated from a difficult-to-obtain belgian yeast.  A crisp and very dry beer with esters/aromas of earthiness and fruitiness and a suble tart finish from Vermont grown blackcurrants

This beer tasted like the water that drips out of a ripe trash bag that's been under your sink for a week.  Sounded pretty good based on the description though, right?  One sip was enough  - and my wife threw out about 2.5 oz out of her 3 oz. pour.  Yes - for those who just read the above and thought that I had downed 20 beers and am still alive - they were 3 oz pours... I was happy at the end - but not enough to post a 3 page diatribe about my kickball prowess.

Epic final sentence. ;)

I'm intrigued by Devil Dancer... I'll have to look into it's availability out West. Were most of the Vermont Brewers regional only, or do they distribute widely? I'm pretty sure that I've tried Leviathan Imperial before.

I'm also interested in The Alchemist, although I'm often wary by the usage of the word "can"instead of "bottle" as I've yet to drink a beer that doesn't have a bitter metallic taste after being poured from the former.

What would be your strongest recommendation out of them all?

Heady topper for sure, but I don't think you can get it outside this state.  Most of the brewers are local only.  Long trail, smutty nose, magic hat, harpoon, and otter creek I've seen elsewhere.

I think stone ipa would have been my second favorite - but I suspect you already know how good that is.

Next year I will do no ipas, and try some of the more interesting things.

I quit drinking a year and a half ago but then Founder's was not shipping West. I used to make lots of trades for West coast brews with Founder's and Bell's beers. The Devil Dancer was one of my favorites but it's a bit strong for most and it's not one to drink multiples of. Founder's was one of my all around favorite brewers with the Double. Trouble DIPA being my goto beer.

Vermont Brewfest was awesome.... it will now be an annual thing for me

Oh I do miss Vermont breweries; I relocated from there to Atlanta maybe 3 years ago, and southern breweries have got nothing on Vermont.

I have no idea... I'm not super fancy with my tasting yet.  I just know that I enjoy it!  Whether I could tell it blind from Southern Tier Double IPA - I'm not sure.

Wow. We have a wine bar that got a special order of Dogfish Head 120 on tap (In Silicon Valley? Yessir!)... Absolutely delicious. SO much better than their 90 minute.

... But my goodness, 18%?!?! That hits you HARD!

Gotta drive home now... (Glad I only had the one!)

Also, if you can get it and are in to Belgiums, I highly recommend Brother Thelonious from North Coast Brewing Company. Incredibly enjoyable, but also on the strong side at 9.4% APV.

How were you conscious? A bottle of 10th by itself is plenty for me.  :-[
And I really need to get my hands on some Pliny/Heady Topper...

Any homebrewers in here?

Heady Topper is amazing - I still have 8 cans in my basement.

I am a semi home brewer - my first batch just finished.... an irish red - kindof a smithwicks clone.  Turns out I don't like smithwicks as much as I remembered though.

I'm most the way there.  A friend brought in some 60 minute Dogfish Head, while I was in the middle of my strongly mixed drink.  How rude.  To help smooth over the awkwardness, I had to accept some beer.  Just cuz I'm a gentleman like htat.

So, I tried a six pack of Akiraku, one of the Japanese concoctions known as Happosei liquor -- it was drinkable, but I still haven't found anything in Japan that I can really call a go-to "cheap" beer.  No Rolling Rock here. :)

I'm impressed with the whisky though.  The Suntory whisky is much better than Jack Daniels.

For microbrews it seems like many places in the US are good now -- I'm from the Midwest and I quite like the Great Lakes brews for the most part.  The Columbus brewpub isn't bad.  Apparently my podunk Chicago suburb hometown (Munster) has a nationally-known brewery now (Three Floyds) although I have yet to try any beers from there.

New Belgium's Mothership Wit or even their Sunshine Wheat are decent. I wasn't much of a wheat beer fan although I always had hopes of finding one I really liked because the general idea of their craft appeals to me. I know a lot of people really like the Hoegarden but it was definitely not for me.

Their Belgian White was something that I bought by the keg twice a year for weekend-long band parties I would throw (this is 15 years ago).  It was light, crisp, slightly citrus, and was the first beer that I'd ever had that I would call refreshing, especially on a hot day.  Sadly, the bottled product was not the same, and now it has changed even on tap.  Uninspired is a great word for it.

Jo - If your question is addressed to me, I was speaking of Blue Moon (their Belgian White).  Widely available now, it was unavailable in bottles 15 years ago (at least in the Pacific NW, where I was at the time).

Cause god forbid if he enjoyed it the wrong way?

Personally I still dont like any form of beer. I try some
every two years or so, but it's always as unpleasant.

Fuzzy, all my love towards you is gone now.  :'(

Nothing to do with me, the Belgium's are very particular about their beers!

I've really stopped drinking beer the last few years and am on a bit of a Cider run at the moment.

Although Runnymede Beer Festival is coming up on Saturday...

Yes, we Belgians have a fine beer brewing tradition. Personally my favorites are Duvel (strong pale ale), La Chouffe (strong pale ale), Gueuze Girardin (sour) and De Koninck (amber pale ale) when I'm thirsty :)

I don't like Hoegaarden and I've tried Westvleteren (n°1 beer in the world) but too complex for my taste.

Our board gaming evening is always accompanied by a fine selection of beers. Favorite day of the week :)

Do you have the correctly shaped glasses for all of them?

I remember getting told off when I lived in Belgium for having the wrong glasses for everything!

No, we're no purists. We'd need a giant cupboard to store all the different types of glasses, but I must admit a beer tastes best in the correct glass.

We have this awesome girly lemonade-esque thing called lonkero  in Finland that's really good. That and vodka or rum mixes is what I drink.

Is it like a shandy? Because I find shandys, on the whole, pretty gross.

Based on wikipedia, no. It's like grape lemonade with alcohol I guess.

The stuff he is talking about is quite like gin&tonic, but replacing tonic with grapefruit (not grape!) lemonade. It has a nice gin flavor, but is sweeter than G&T which is an issue for many and also explains why it has a bit of "kid's drink" -reputation. I like it, though.

It's a traditional Finnish drink, originally designed for the 1952 Olympics. Someone thought that having some readily mixed drinks would make things smoother in bars during the event, and hence invented both the grapefruit+gin combination and another even weirder drink that mixes two other unique Finnish products: Jaloviina, a mix of vodka and cognac, and Pommac, a carbonated soft drink made of some 25 different fruits/berries and matured in oak barrels. The latter mix was quickly mostly forgotten, but the one with gin and grapefruit immediately became a classic and has been selling heavily since then.

Just wanna say hi to my f.ds drink buddies, especially Galz.

Man, I've been mostly dry the last two weeks what with both Conventions. I'm looking forward to getting home tonight and kicking off this weekend right. I need a good long unwind. I've got some Racer-X in a Growler calling me, and Hoptoligist in bottle. I should grab some Ruination on my way home too. I wish I'd had time to get some Dogfish 120 and bring it back with me from Charlotte.

I'm buzzing good now. Feels so good to be home. Hard to have the energy to do the things I'm supposed to do today though. ;D

For the record, anybody on the West Coast here, Silicon Valley area - if you enjoy hoppy beers, take a look for Knee Deep Brewing Company - Hoptologist in particular - they are absolutely delicious. They are from the North Bay, but cover most the Valley. Yum.

Had a pretty intense cocktail earlier this evening whose primary ingredients were rye, Benedictine, and Fernet Branca.  It was described as "boozy and herbaceous" as well as "good for sipping", and it sure was!

Mmm, you know I love my IPA's. I'll inquire around about that, see what I can find. How dark is it? With it's flavor profile, I wonder how it would do with a scoop of Vanilla Ice cream in it? Very few beers have the richness and fullness of flavor to make a true beer float. Usually Chocolate Stouts I've found. Hmm...

I am glad to see that craft beer and board games seem to be a frequent partnership. There's a lot of 60-minute passed around our board gaming table.

Cheapish wine does the trick just fine.  The key is to buy an entire bottle and never bother with a glass.

I think tonight might be cheapish wine night.

I had exactly that sort of night. With a girl and two guitars, absolutely perfect.

Ahh, just happened to be in the area of a Vegan Hippy restaurant that often carries really special beers on tap. Usually I get updates when something *really* special comes in. Sadly, I haven't received any memos recently, but it's still usually worth dropping in...

... And boy am I glad I did. For the second time in a month (and only the second time ever out West here), I got to enjoy Dogfish Head 120 on tap. And oh my goodness was it as delicious as the first time... And oh my goodness was it's 18% a real kick.

Ahh, what a wonderful way to start my weekend.

Please stop talking about that game in this thread. I gave up my magic addiction a long time ago. Now I'm only addicted to this forum, mafia, and drinking.

I can't start it again and I want to!

The DFH Punkin is one of my least favorite pumpkin beers. Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin was my favorite of them all. For the taste I used to love Cottonwood's pumpkin beer. I think Foothills picked up this company and maybe shifted the recipe a bit. Anyhow, it always struck me as tasting almost like liquid pumpkin pie.

I like to kick back with a 0% alcohol 'beer' before I go to bed.

Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional beer as much as the next guy - probably going to drink some tonight at our regular boardgame night -, but getting drunk alone in your own home is kind of silly. Besides, I'm on low sleep so 1 regular beer has the effect of 10 and I don't want to be drunk when I change a diaper or give a bottle, I don't think that ends well or that my wife is going to thank me if our baby poops his entire bed.

"Corruption, Greed and Lust. They're all represented on the hooks today. Tomorrow they'll be stringing Gluttony, Desire and Sloth. Go ahead. Tell yourself you're better than all of them. But you can't. Hell can be funny like that. Down here it's all just sin. Everyone here is screwed just like you. They don't care who you sliced, diced or cheated. No one is escaping this heinous place.

Your roommate is an Ax murderer. Eerily, he's not threatening. How can he be? Here, the Fallen Angel owns your body, mind and soul. As such, no one can take your life. It's already been taken. Or was it given? Neither matters. Did you seriously think you were living a virtuous life? At least Satan serves beer in Hell. He brews it himself right there in that flame stoked cauldron. Rumor has it the beer is straw yellow, bone dry and simply labeled Inferno."

Not the best beer in the world, no. But it's flavor does stand up well to - well, to the flavor. Brewed by Port Brewing Co., Inferno Ale runs in The Lost Abbey family. It's a rich golden Belgium with a head that almost reminds me of whipped egg whites. Very frothy, into what almost forms stiff peaks. At 9.0%, it does pack a little bit of a punch, but it's very smooth, and very enjoyable - even after three bottles of Ruination to shock the palate.

This week I tried Lagunitas' IPA Maximus.  I saw it in the store and got excited.

I have previously been a fan of Lagunitas regular IPA, and then even more so with the excellent Little Sumpin.

Little Sumpin - Wild is a little strange, and I think I prefer the base.

IPA Maximus felt like it existed somewhere between Dogfishhead 60 and 90 minutes.  I decided that it was too "sweet", and am not really excited about finishing the 6er.

The current offering of Harpoon's 100 Barrel series is a White IPA which I'd highly recommend. It's higher alcohol than their regular IPA, but tastes a bit lighter and more citrus-y.

Also had a Deviant Dale's from Oskar Blues last night. Damn is that good.

I recently tried Little Sumpin' Sumpin' and really love it! It's already one of my favorite beers.

-snip-
As a human being, do you find yourself accused of drinking too much? Well, "accuse" is a strong word, but I guess "called out" might be appropriate.

My co-workers at lunch have expressed an interest in drinking. Knowing they weren't drinkers, I brought Mike's Hard Lemonade and Miller Lite. I introduced a form of carbomb. This gets interesting looks from other people in the cafeteria, and one woman that we know even looked at the strange way we were holding our carbombs in hand and said, "You guys drink too much for lunch."

Sadly, this isn't the first time I've heard such a thing. I have a hobby that depresses my mind. I love drinking tactically. I love drowning problems. When I relax, I'm usually doing nothing.

Even among my beer-drinking lunch crowd, I'll hear someone say, "Count me out for this one. I'm not in the mood to drink." I always found that statement weird.

I mean, I'll sometimes not be in the mood for a jello shot, but I would always say, "I'm not in the mood for a jello shot," instead of "I'm not in the mood to drink." I'm always in the mood to drink.

I guess I'm an oddball in that I don't consider drinking to be a bad thing. I suspect there are a lot of you who feel the same way.

+10,000.  This was made so much the better because I came directly from the "thinking too much" thread, and didn't catch the mirror, despite the "snip".  However, I did immediately want to PM you to see where you worked, so I could apply.  Drinking in the cafeteria.  Well-played sir!

What's your favorite rum?  I'm looking for something relatively complex, that can be sipped, like fine cognac or bourbon.

I love Seven Fathoms Rum, but the only place I've ever bought it is in the Cayman Islands.  That may be the only place it's sold, in fact.

Flor De Caña is also delicious, and much more available.  I couldn't find a local liqour store who had the 7 year, so I asked if they could order it for me, and they did.  Pretty slick.  The 7 year is most excellent (Gran Reserve).  5 year seems pretty common, but basically it's just expensive Captain Morgan in my opinion.  Never tried the 12 year but someday soonish that'll happen.

But the 7 year Caña is definitely something worth sipping.

Mmm, had me some Lagunitas Brown Shugga' tonight, and I must say, it was quite delicious. I actually didn't think I would like it as much, so was pleasantly surprised. You really could taste the sweetness, but it wasn't at all overwhelming.

Sadly, I didn't bother checking the ABV until after three glasses, when I looked it up on my mobile, and found it carried a heavy 9.99% percent.

Needless to say, I'm a little tipsy now.

I was a manager at a startup once where my boss's brother owned a small winery.  His boss, the owner of the company, enjoyed beer.  Every day (unfortunately that meant 7 days a week for a while) at precisely 5:00, one of those two would walk around and ask anyone still in the building whether they wanted beer or wine.  There was of course a dedicated refrigerator.  We did some serious brainstorming into the evening hours, while getting progressively more tipsy.  I learned a LOT about wine that year.

Two recommendations on bourbon, for less than $20 a bottle:  W.L. Weller Special Reserve (90 proof), and Watkins (80 proof).  Also bought a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select 18-year old today, but haven't tried it yet.

For general purpose drinking, the Kraken has grown on me quite a bit. It's by far the best spiced rum I've had and it's pretty cheap too. It's the only spiced rum that I've been able to enjoy on the rocks. Appleton Estate Reserve makes a really nice smooth daquiri (and no, not the stupid girly frozen ones, just simple syrup and lime). Gosling's Black Seal is great with ginger beer if you can find some near you.

Had a very good dessert beer that tasted kind of like a mounds with dark chocolate.  Custom beers are pretty cool.

I wanted to announce here that I'll be drunk, but I've forgot.

I am drunk, there was a trivia "quiz" which involed, among other things, drinking large amount of alcohol. We won, and we also won all alcohol games (by far, in both).

I won a pub quiz once.  It went like this:

I was the one nominated from my team to go up for the final question.  I was against one other guy; we each had to write down our answer.  Closest answer wins.

The question was: "What is the worldwide box office gross of Ghostbusters?"

My thought process: "Well, the Dark Knight made $1 billion, right?  And Ghostbusters is popular too.  So I'll guess $700 million."

Announcer: "Well, actually, the right answer is $291 million..."

Me: "Crap!!"

Announcer: "But you win, because [the other guy] guessed $750 million!"

Ghostbusters released in 1984; Dark Knight in 2008. That's a 24 year span that basically starts at the late stages of an up hill climb into an economic peak and ends at an economic valley. A gallon of gas was roughly $1.20 in 1984 (when I started driving a decade later it was more like $0.89).
For demonstration purposes I will use a present day $/gal of $3.45.
Based on this price per gallon metric we can use an adjustment of .348 which would have given you a decent guess at  $287.35M.

Proof that critical thinking skills scale inversely proportional to alcohol intake.

Just your reply ... I go to the pub quiz by Harvard and no one there would do that much math at a pub quiz ;)

Of course, maybe I should try one by MIT.

Is drinking a prerequisite for pub quiz participation? If not, maybe I have a money making scheme in mind. :)

It wasn't that much math and in reality could be computed in the same amount of time it would take the average drunk guy to throw out a gut feeling guess. Ghostbusters = mid eighties = gas $1.00. Dark Knight = 2010 = gas 3X that much. 1B/3 = 300M.

The real caveat is most quizzes I've witnessed have lots of sports related questions which I would get absolutely creamed on.

To prevent cheating in the age of smartphones, pub quizzes have lately taken to be more "identify the movie based in this picture" and "identify this song being played over our ultra crappy speakers for 0.5 seconds at 10% volume".

Sadly this means that the kind of pub quiz in which I excel (knowledge of a lot of miscellaneous facts) is no longer in vogue.

Yeah, this irritates me a bit. I love bar trivia and feel like I'm pretty good at it, but I refuse to cheat and have no idea how I'd do if every other team played honestly. Still sometimes manage to steal a win every now and then though.

I've also gotten annoyed that the bar I usually play at recently switched from Stump! to Geeks Who Drink which is a far inferior game imho. Though you can win free beers on bonus rounds at the latter which somewhat balances it.

Ok, this wasn't exactly a "pub quiz", it was a competition that was held at the bar, we had to be teams of 3, had to have costumes on, during qualifiactions and finals it was only 3 teams at the stage at the same time so there was no chance of cell-phone communication. Games were - drinking shots, drinking wine, guess movie/song, trivia and a group act, among other things.

Pubs just dont ban the use of smart phones and mark answers at the end of each round over there?

Sure, you'll get the odd person who rushes off to the toilet, but they are usually not the ones that win anyway in my experience...

Saturday still looks promising.

So, tomorrow (well, rather today, it's pretty late) is gonna be awesome. Since we don't have Halloween, biggest costume party in town is held at last/second last Saturday in the year, organized by Club of Students of Engineering (we are pretty much the most awesome student club here) - waited whole year for it! Gonna make up for tonight!

You are so wrong, I am poor-built piss-poor fighter (have a heart condition, couldn't do sports as a kid) - this is also probably my first fight, and pretty much trying to cover as many weakspots as possible. Guys were complete assholes and came at us pretty much with intent to fight over I'm-not-really-completely-sure-what reason. Mleh

Eh, I've worked with people like that. Never understood the rationale behind it. Even when I'm drunk, I've never felt a desire to get physical.

I didn't do sports as a kid either, but I did do martial arts for about 8 years, so if I did get in a fight I think I could hold my own. But like I said, it's not at all my style or tastes.

Sorry to hear they messed with your night though. Never a good way to go out.

Whisky bar tonight.......well a pub with over 125 types of whisky
Try any bourbon with the name "Van Winkle", and the older the better.

If you are a scotch drinker, and they have a Glenfiddich product call "Snow Phoenix", it's amazing.

Jager is not bad (but I still drink it double with coke, so it kills the taste quite a bit :P), we here have a similar but much better drink (Pelinkovac) but alas, it was not available.

I am going out with intent to drink tonight, expect a report. :P I'll probalby also post into Matchups thread to demand a game :D

Surprisingly little new year's entries?

I was at friends house, was supposted to go to some of his other friends, but they got in a fight just before, so we went out somewhere, and got stuck there (I also wanted to visit a third friend, but alas) - got back home at 7-8 am. Was ok.

Drinks were drunk, but responsibly and without consequences on my part.

I played some dominion sloshed on New Year's.  The next day I had to tell my newbie friend that building a Market chain deck is a bad thing and even though drunkpops did that last night and won it should not be done.

Dear Everybody,

Drink this shit.  The 7 Year and nothing more or less.  (Trust me, I've tried both.)

http://flordecana.com/

I have yet to have a hangover after drinking it.  And I am a pro at getting hangovers so it isn't from lack of trying.

Sincerely,

This will apparently be our first disagreement.  I find their product (at least the one I bought and consumed one drink's worth of in Honduras) to be utterly foul.  The nose was non-existent; on the palate I got medicinal plastic (like the coating on a vitamin capsule, mixed with the phthalate smell of cheap vinyl - I don't even want to think about the congeners in this one), and the finish was little more than an ester-y film on my soft palate.  I would have given it away, but I would have been embarrassed.

Maybe the stuff that they export to the US is a different product than the one they export to Honduras.  IIRC they had two different ages there as well, and I tried the older one.  God knows how bad the younger one is.

Mimosas are one of my favorite parts of the New Year.

Also, I discovered that I kind of like Apple Cider and Gin.  Am I terribly confused?  I don't see any references to it.

You, sir, you are awful.  I know I've told you this once but wanted to tell you again.  Just awful.

AWWW, raerae called me sir. 8)  Shraeye must have told her how old I am.  :-[ Damn him. :'(

Maybe for once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "You're making a scene."

Dear Everybody,

Drink this shit.  The 7 Year and nothing more or less.  (Trust me, I've tried both.)

http://flordecana.com/

I have yet to have a hangover after drinking it.  And I am a pro at getting hangovers so it isn't from lack of trying.

Sincerely,

Apparently an Alcoholic

I've been (politely) asked to leave the Four Seasons Restaurant in Chicago by the Maître d'hôtel. We were out with a work group, and our Boss (who had just received a sizable raise) had offered to buy drinks that night. The Maître d'hôtel came over with the check in his hand, and said to us "Perhaps Sirs have had enough enjoyment for one evening."

When he handed our boss the bill, you could see his jaw slacken ever so slightly. My best guess thinking back on the drinks ordered is that it was somewhere around $5000. For 8 of us.

Did you know it is cheaper to get drunk off of O'Doul's Non-Alcoholic Beer than Dom Perignon?

You must have been drinking something other than cocktails (or were there for 7 or 8 hours).  Even at $30/cocktail, thats about 21 cocktails each to get to $625 each (average).  Damn, I'm not letting any of you near my Pappy Van Winkle stash.

That is possibly the most hilariously over-cautious way to cut someone off ever. Love it.

On an unrelated note, Galz, I have to read a bill and interview a lobbyist today, so I'm basically reflecting on how glad I am I don't cover politics regularly.
