Can someone explain what's going on here?

I noticed that tat had gotten pretty high on the leaderboard in only 319 games so I was looking at the stats page of tat and noticed that on his Games Played graph the number he had played dropped from about 1300 to 200 in December 2011 and then started climbing as normal from there.

I looked around and found that this had also happened to theory. Who's games dropped also in December 2011 from 2100 or so to about 600.
http://councilroom.com/player?player=theory
I looked around a bit at some other player's pages and they seemed normal. Here's myself:

WanderingWinder:

perdhapley:

etc.

Anyhow I couldn't find any other pages that did that. Anyone know what happened there?

dougz redefined which games were ranking eligible.

Ah, so theory and tat were playing games with defined conditions (or something along those lines) before dougz redefined the leaderboard conditions.

Yeah, I used to play a lot with !alchemy.  I even experimented with !attacks, and let me tell you, I do not recommend that.

I've seem to have about 250 excluded games too and I used to just sit in the lobby accepting challenges on whatever criteria an opponent set. I guess a few of those games were played against Theory when he was excluding alchemy :) .

I seem to remember that Tat rose to the top of the ranking by generally auto-matching low ranked players but excluding a few cards that might be considered swingy or unskilled. That's why he's missing so many games from his record. He seemed a good player anyway so I'm not surprised he can rebuild his ranking.

I was under the impression that those games didn't count going forward from the change.  Did those games get retroactively removed?

You didn't notice a big difference when all those 'require platinum and colony games' got wiped off your record?

Pretty sure tat isn't a dude.  Might be wrong, though.

Lol, nah.  I wasn't playing much at the time that went down.  Nor did I pay much attention to how the leaderboard worked.  I only learned that colony required games didnt count when someone told me.  That's pretty harsh though going back and removing games that were within the rules to be counted at the time.

Was there some abuse that was occurring at the time that prompted this change?  I never really understood why contraint games were unranked given that that its marked when you accept the game.

Was this back when Paralyzed was doing his thing?

Paralyzed got to #1 on the leaderboard by proposing the same set of 10 cards (which were perfectly suited to the KC/goons/masq pin: Bishop, Colony, Goons, Island, King's Court, Laboratory, Masquerade, Mint, Peddler, Platinum, Tactician, and Vault) and winning almost every game.

[edit]Yeah, Paralyzed jumped to level 50 or so in September 2011 with something like a 135-10 record (almost all of those with the same set of cards). Then, when games with constraints stopped counting towards the leaderboard, he would play the bare minimum number of games so as not to be booted off the leaderboard from inactivity, that's how the leaderboard worked at the time I think? And so he stayed level 50 or so, and thus at the top of the leaderboard, until those games got removed from his ranking retroactively, sometime just after November 2011.

Or at least I think that's how it went down.[/edit]

Yes, that's why.

It doesn't matter so much, because recently played games provide more information about your skill level, effectively screening off games that took place a long time in the past.

I think Eli_k has one of the greatest jumps there. I can't check it now, since I have problems loading CR, but he has played a LOT of games.

It's one of the advantages of not having a life. :-)
