Horrible FG luck pretty much, probably a few bad decisions too.

Yeah, Margrave was better than Library.  He got more Gold than me too.

I am horrible with most of the cards in this Kingdom.  It was pretty close, but he gets a good Forge hand in the end.

Also some amazing shuffle luck for me:  my only 2 FGs collide on T5, 7, 8, and 11.  His don't collide until T9, at which point he has 6 FGs.  That's pretty crazy.  I grab more Gold earlier, but that was also the result of early luck.

I think jsh is stop-on in his analysis.  Library/FV is a great counter to Margrave, but the extra buy from Margrave is far too nice to pass up.  I grab 3, he grabs 1.

This game screams "engine" from so many angles.  GH to boost Crossroads, both of those to activate Conspirators, Wharves for extra cards, Forge to get rid of junk drawn from multiple Wharves... Golem would have been great here too except that the time to buy the Potion probably wouldn't have been made up by the Golems.  This game was closer than it looks, and my final-turn Forge really made the game, with my T13 Forge (CCCCCEE+CR -> Gold) being nice too.

clb 3 - Stringer Bell 0

These were three very enjoyable games. Two of them were pseudo-mirrors (same idea, different approaches). Nice games, Stringer.

clb 32 Stringer 26
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/06/game-20120706-145957-7616e8c4.html
We both want bridge mega-turns, but since there is no good draw support (only villages and crossroads), it ends up being more of a series of bridge-enabled purchases, rather than anything mega. Still enjoyable, if tense. I usually don't play with point counter, so I often found myself wishing I had kept better track of VP purchases, especially with vineyards, but then realize I can look it up. I really liked the idea of grabbing vineyards in this deck, but didn't consider it until what I thought was too late (when he bought his first potion).

clb 45 Stringer 36
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/06/game-20120706-150751-340401f1.html
Here I go for a classic HP+X stack - a few silvers, nomad camp, gold (loan for trashing). The FV seem to be very helpful, though I think I played one or two before I should, meaning my HP drew FV instead of something I might have liked more.
It isn't as well lubricated as I would like it to be. Should I have ignored the FV? I start greening before I would really like to (I would like to have more HPs first) as I am concerned that his alchemists will soon overtake me. I think this was a good call, but would like to hear some professional opinions.

clb 39 Stringer 26
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/06/game-20120706-151320-776353e7.html
IGG-rush, aided by Monuments. I thought I was sunk when he bought a Province. Luckily (?) I picked one up, too (turns out more to ease my mind as I could have won without it) and continued to hit 5 consistently enough to win the duchy split 6-2. I am not super keen on his purchase of either village (especially when he did it) or moneylender. I can see how moneylender might be useful, but I think that Monument gets the same net +2$, gives a VP, and leaves the copper in your deck, which, in these sorts of games, I think that you want to keep your coppers around. I took a copper every chance I could (including on a $2 hand), which might have hurt my chances at provinces, but I think that it helped me to continue to hit 5 despite the curses and green cards. Looking at it now, I think that with winning the IGG split 7-3, I probably didn't need to worry about dilution as much - should I have picked up fewer coppers? I commented to Stringer that it would have been nice to have some gardens in the deck - we both ended up with pretty bloated hands.

Good games, Stringer, thanks for playing.

You sure, Fabian?  I fully expect a couple of 3-2 records from each bracket to get to the knockout rounds.

Is the plan still to take top 8 from each bracket? Because that seems like quite a lot for the number of people in each bracket. The only reason I mention this is that a smaller top cut (say 4) gives us a better chance of finishing the tournament before isotropic goes down.

There's no shame going 1-2 in bracket A. That is a tough bracket.

If you just stop playing people will remember you as the guy that was really good, played poorly in a few games and quit beacause of that.

The thing is: If you don't play, you can't play good.

B tier, round 3.  glengarry defeats ednever 3-0-1.

he was playing from hotel room on vacation and the matches were spread out over a couple hours, so i don't have links to all 4.  will do a belated write-up tomorrow from councilroom.com links because frankly i'm pretty proud of my play.  here's the only one i managed to save the link in my buffer:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/08/game-20120708-080556-ae3b217b.html

each of the 3 wins seemed to be me completing a big engine turn to come from behind, essentially.

perdhapley beats yuma 3-2.

1: yuma 47 - PH 39 - A fun one where we both go for Baron with some Alchemist support, and it comes down to the final Province with Duchies and Estates both gone.

2: PH 37 - yuma 18 - Witch/Hunting Party out, I grab two Witches and draw perfect, splitting curses 7-3.

3: yuma 41 - PH 38 - Tense FV/Wharf game that came down to the wire. I played this one bad, opening 5/2 and grabbing a Fool's Gold without even noticing that Embargo was out. yuma gets the jump on Silk Road and massively outplays me throughout; I buy out Estates at the end in hopes of a tie but miscount my victory cards and fall one short of bumping up SR points. Lesson learned, I really need to pay more attention in situations like this.

4: PH 30 - yuma 23 - Governor/Chapel insanity. First-player advantage is obviously massive here, and I get to my triple-Province turn first.

5: PH 46 - yuma 25 - 28 shared Swindler hits in 25 turns! This one is worth a look just for its comical brutality, although I'm sure yuma didn't find it nearly as entertaining as I did.

I always enjoy playing yuma, and overall I'd say he definitely outplayed me here, but luck was certainly on my side. Thanks for the match yuma!

I literally laughed out loud at that.

That is still the plan; again, it has to do with not changing the rules mid-tournament.

Is round 4 starting soon, seems there is a lot of unplayed matches in round 3 but the deadline was today?

Is round 4 starting soon, seems there is a lot of unplayed matches in round 3 but the deadline was today?

Part of the problem is the confusion with times.  Originally it was to be a two-week delay, which became a half-week delay for two separate rounds, since round 2 ended pretty nearly within its time.  I'm loath to just DQ people right now because of that confusion.

With so many people missing, I'm going to send PMs to those who haven't checked in, and post about it in the "missing" thread.  I'm on limited access during vacation, so I probably won't check the PMs until tomorrow night at the earliest.  I'll DQ non-replies at mid-week, then let Round 4 go an extra half week, which seems the only fair way to do things.  Any complaints about that?  I'm happy to hear thoughts.

I'm for DQing people who don't meet the deadline period, but that's why I was never the popular kid at school.

Number missing

6 in bracket C
2 in bracket B
4 in bracket A

12 people in total.

your solution seems reasonable. It is a holiday time for a lot of people so they could be having trouble getting to their computers, I don't know if those 12 people have reported a missing opponent (thus lowering the amount of 'missing' people) but yea, when was the original deadline for round 3?

Two have reported a missing opponent in bracket A.  I was tempted to call those because A is the most competitive, but I can't justify treating one bracket differently.

Quote
but yea, when was the original deadline for round 3?

Originally, last Monday (02 July).  After the theoretical two-week delay, next Monday (16 July).  So... yeah.

I'm really sorry for the confusion, everyone!  The other tournament really threw us way off. :(
