Gg etiquette

Unless I feel someone was rude I pretty much end all my games with "gg", just as I start every game with hi (or hey), gl.

A few times, almost always in blow outs (both when i win and when i lose), my opponent has taken "gg" to be mean spirited and told me so.

Are there times when it's rude to end a game with. "gg"?

"gg" is like the default thing.

I find it more rude when an opponent goes straight back to the lobby.

"Thanks for the game" is a nice alternative. It's plain English and it lacks any of the overloading that GG has gotten from other gaming communities where it can come off as sarcastic or dismissive.

If you are about to win, it is uncourteous to say 'gg' until after the game is actually over.  The other player can't see your hand, and it can sound like "This game is already over, you just don't know it yet."  You can say it if your opponent has already admitted they can't win.  Saying "I think I have it this turn" is also fine.

Yeah, I consider gg from the winner to be rude when the game was actually a blowout.  It may only be a minority of the time that it's actually intended sarcastically, but far more often it simply indicates the person is following a rote script rather than actually showing consideration for their opponent.  Taking the time to actually write something appropriate to the game at hand, whether "close one", "rough luck there", or simply "thanks for the game", is far more courteous in my opinion, and if that's too much trouble I think leaving silently is at worst no worse than an ill-considered 'gg'.

"gg" is fine as long as you wait until the game is over before you use it.

Although some people can see it as sarcastic or gloating depending on the way the game went.

To be a little less impersonal I usually say "Thanks for the game" if I win solidly, "whew close" if I win by a narrow margin and "NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" if I lose.

I don't have a problem with people gg-ing fbefore the game is over in the following circumstances: they know their opponent can end in a win this turn, and they're pre-emptively saying it to make sure they get it in before a return to lobby; they have enough to ed the game on their next turn, and thus know that it will be over by then (this also assumes that there are no relevant attacks, and no way for the opponent to take enough lead that they wouldn't end the game on their next turn, without that opponent ending the game anyway); they are resigning.
What drives me nuts is when people say 'gg' when they just feel like they've gotten bad luck, and are like 'oh, the game is over' and then DON'T resign.

I disagree with the above, I think blowouts are even more reason to say gg.  Gg is the default.  If someone just wasted me with Torturers, the last thing I want him to do is acknowledge it by picking a patronizing alternative.

I enjoy saying gg before the game begins, then wishing my opponent a lucky and fun day after it's over.

I find anything more than DD to be just obnoxiously large.

In all seriousness, I agree with WW's use and expectations about gg on this one.  Although I do like seeing people say "thanks for the game" since it seems more personal.

It's so overused that I don't even acknowledge it anymore. It's just empty text when I see it. It takes very little to hammer out G G, so it's like saying nothing at all. If I were the type to be offended at someone leaving the lobby without saying anything (and I'm not), then I'd also be offended at someone typing "gg".

I always try to personalize my message a bit. I may actually spell out "good game." I'll mix it up a little: "good going", "ouch", and "lucky me" are all fine alternatives. I usually don't like being that laconic (as anyone who reads my posts can tell), so those little nuggets are rare.

I never consider "gg" to be rude. It's automatic for some people, so I treat it as if the person hadn't spoken at all, which is usually the case anyway.

I was about to ask what HH means, but I think I figured it out.

Is that a commonly used acronym with that crowd? I've never seen it used in the States.

I never type "gg" as I can usually find time to type something. Sometimes the opponent returns to the lobby before I finish typing but that's their problem.

Not sure. HH is also license plate for Hamburg. So it's not just this, but as a greeting it's a little problematic I would say.

Yeah, I had never heard HH in a gaming context before, and I don't like it all that much tbh. That particular acronym is... somewhat charged.

I always used gg, but I should probably use "Thanks for playing", given how upset people can be at "gg". But it's too long to type :p.

I have on occasion used a pre-emptive "gg" as a psychological ploy with a roughly 50% effective rate.

In a close game or one with alternate VP such as Gardens, Silk Road or Vineyards often the point load can be murky. If the last province is standing on your opponent's turn and he plays $8 a quick "gg" can convince him to take it when in fact he is behind too many points for it to win.

Seems a bit shady to me.  On the other hand, how can you even be sure that your gg convinced him to go for it?  He might have simply miscounted the points.
