I personally like simpler setups for newbies (to forum mafia), but if he's willing to play a more complicated setup, I say let him.

In other news, speaking of face-to-face mafia, I was running a few games of it (six players) recently.  We were doing night starts to make it get to an odd numbers of players during the day.  Most of them hadn't played before, so I just did a simple setup with one mafia, one doctor, and one cop (I don't think doc-cop is as broken in smaller setups, especially when most people haven't played).

So, one game, the mafia (one of the people who has played before) killed the other person who has played (he was a VT), and upon day start he instantly claims doctor.  Another Vanilla Townie (yes, it's true) claimed doc as well, saying the other was the mafia.  After a bit of arguing, the VT said he just claimed doc because I had said before the game that it's a bad idea.  The real doc claimed, but everybody agreed that the VT was the scummiest and they lynched him.  (During the day, the cop claimed as well for no apparent reason.)  That night the mafia and the doc both targeted the cop.  The cop targeted the mafia.  The mafia said he protected the cop, but then the cop said that the mafia was the mafia.  The mafia said that the cop must be scum.  I caught his logic flaw instantly, but nobody else did for a while.  After probably 10 minutes of discussion, finally the doctor realized it all and they instantly caught the mafia.

Follow the cop is still broken, even if the players can't figure it out.

Which I guess doesn't mean it's a problem in your case.

I don't know, macho cop is such an easy fix.  But that is a hilarious story.

But I was actually having a conversation like this with the friend I was talking about, how some towns are so new that they need a lot of power just to have a chance over that sort of "I claimed cop because someone said that was a terrible idea" logic, and then after a while some face-to-face groups get too good at reading expressions and can half solve the game from tone and shifty eyes and need a lot less power than would be fair online.

But my favorite thing about online is that so much more complication is possible in terms of PR resolution.

Anyway, I guess I'll bring up Greater Idea to him.

Lots of people play "no flip" in person, and that makes follow-the-cop less broken I do believe.

I like the way Werewolves of Miller's Hollow does it, which is that instead of a Doctor, you have a Witch, which is a One-Shot Doctor One-Shot Vig, but the Cop (Seer) is a full Cop+Rolecop.

And yes, playing with no flip works well IRL, but only with a very talkative group that knows each other pretty well.

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned, we did no flips.  That's how I play in person.

I played a couple of IRL games awhile ago with some friends using the JK9 setup (1 JK, 1 Tracker, 2 Mafia, 5 VTs) and had a similar situation happen. I was the Tracker and I was about to be lynched on D2 when I claimed. Someone else counter claimed me. I tols them I could prove it since I Tracked the JK the night before. I outted them and they admitted to being the JK. But people didn't believe me and lynched me. The JK then targeted that player to block him, but ended up saving him because he was Town and was shot by the Mafia! Anyway, I asked the counterclaimer why the heck he would do that and he told me he didn't want the real Tracker to have to out himself. Which would be a decent gambit if I hadn't already proved that I wasn't lying (or just a really good guesser) when I outted the JK.

Weirdly enough, Town ended up winning. Mafia still thought I was lying about who the JK was so they never killed her. Crazy game.

There are three ? Huh, I have one. Don't get to play it much though, since you need to 8-9 minimum, optimal around 12-13.

Has anyone else here seen Wayward Pines? It just got over and would make the perfect theme for a Mafia game.

Why do you want to do her while you're watching the show?

I think it'd be a little ridiculous for this topic to have 2,000 replies.

You guys use your 10 more replies wisely.
