Familiar, philosopher stone game - where did I go wrong?

You opened 5/2, and your opponent got a Familiar on turns 3/4 while you had to wait for Turn 5.  Also, you were second player.

This one you can write off to the luck of the draw, both of you took the correct strategy but you had worse hands early.

I know I got unlucky but do you think I should have followed the advice in this article:

and done something risky to respond to the bad luck? - like buying more terminals

One thing you did significantly better was buying ventures instead of gold.  Okay not significantly but it is better with the presence of philosopher's stone.

A lot can be told by the start.  Try to recognize the start and evaluate if you are behind or ahead, that should be able to tell you a bit of the outcome.
