Semi-final result

Here are some four player games between DG, MrEevee, Fabian, and WanderingWinder. I believe that these will be made into videos by WW so I won't say too much about them. I'll say a bit more about the tiebreakers.

Game 1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-074432-7c45fc27.html
Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-075721-b1a0f460.html
Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-080847-37aa3f95.html
Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-082518-0954458e.html
Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-084154-ec950910.html

Between the four of us, we wouldn't recommend 4 player semi-finals for future competitions. It's nice to see 4 player games but with all these jesters and swindlers it was difficult for good play to overcome a good luck. I don't know the scoring, but the conclusion was that MrEevee and I needed a play off. This gave another series of 7 matches. I was feeling a bit frazzled by this stage and was putting curses on top of my deck with watchtowers, so I'm quite glad I put some decent Dominion together by the end.

MrEevee 61 : 48 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-090050-32e364f5.html
MrEevee 29 : 39 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-091433-58b5f5f4.html
MrEevee 18 : 38 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-092517-efe3c76f.html
MrEevee 39 : 37 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-093358-7d8ce830.html
MrEevee 18 : 42 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-094744-01874fe0.html
MrEevee 36 : 45 DG http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/23/game-20120523-095432-b8e86ce4.html

Game 1 : I had a 5/2 split here stayed on a 5 cost card strategy that wasn't going to prosper. MrEevee built a better deck with swindlers and goons and deserved the win.
Game 2 : Funny little game this one. It needed some delicate play. I suspect I won through extra trashing from the loan, letting me accelerate into the end game with governors, but it might not have needed much different to go the other way.
Game 3 : Minions game where I got better early draws and was able to close it out easily.
Game 4 : Watchtowers and ill-gotten gains. Looks like a close game but I think MrEevee deserved it.
Game 5 : I liked the look of the engine deck components here, even without an extra buy, and the arrival of the ghost ship from the black market killed off MrEevee's silver and trader deck.
Game 6: Sea hags with a second stage of deck recovery. MrEevee had some poor draws here again and I was able ease away without many governor worries.

Thanks for games guys. I haven't played 11 games in a row for a long time.

Between the four of us, we wouldn't recommend 4 player semi-finals for future competitions.

I specifically said NOT to convey this as my opinion. What I said is that it's very weird to have this mixed in with 2-player, without having the whole thing be mixed throughout. The 78%/8%/14% split is strange. It may seem like a subtle distinction, but I think it's an important one.
Also, if you have multiplayer, you need MORE games, not less.

Yeah, as I said in the other thread, I was worried about the 4-player semis, but as that was set well before I took over I didn't want to change things in the middle.  And while I understand the reasoning for fewer multiplayer games--5 4P games will take 50% longer, on average, than 7 2P games--from a standpoint of what's needed to determine a winner, I think you need at least 9 games for four players, possibly more.

Of course, that means scheduling a 4-hour block... which might not be feasible for many.

I think, on the whole, multiplayer format just doesn't work well for an online tournament; I don't plan to use it in the future.

This is a little off topic, but I just think it's really nice you took things over and saw it through. Thanks.

I'll follow up with some commentary soon.  In the meantime, here are the logs.

So first thing is that games end SO much quicker in 4P, it is really hard to pace yourself of when to green.  When its 2P, if you have to think to buy green, don't yet.  If you have to think to buy green in 4P, buy it.

Second thing, attacks just become so much stronger... except for cursers.   Anything that interacts "with every other player" is a good card.  Okay a bit of an overstatement but cards that we normally ignore are half-decent.

Third, Jack games are still boring in 4P.

Game 1: 5/2 on an IGG board.  I totally expected to see everyone have 3 curses by their first shuffle.  As last player I decided that margrave would be a better option, and the extra coppers wouldn't hurt.  What I did forget about that assessment is that there is hoard.  Mandarin definitely allows you to get there the fastest.  Coheed capitalizes on this and takes first.  I grab 4 IGGs late and I remember Ninjabus saying it was a bad idea but it gave me the economy to buy some of the green cards later on.  I think that's what gave me the edge there.  It also very hard to be 4th player.

Game 2: 2 Pirate ship vs. Margrave vs. witch.  Margrave is clearly the star or whenever only one person gets the ddiscarder, they will be the star.  I struggle to buy anything really with two pirate ships firing non-stop and hamlets are gone.  I think one could have really built a decent engine out of hamlets, markets, barons, +card but never stocked up enough hamlets.  Funny thing happens near the ending where both O and I (lol O and I) get 4 estates each turn and three piles becomes a factor suddenly.  We kill the curses to put ourselves at the top before their ships go off.

Game 3: DoubleJack where it plays out as planned except I get 5 provinces somehow.

Game 4-5: to come but very fun sabotaging and harvest play.

Very fun games and we had some nice discussion afterwards. Not going to talk too much about them just going to give my insight on the games.

Game 1: I look at the board and notice Hoard and the fact that it'll end on 3 piles and nobody can really build a province buying engine. I see Mandarin as a huge opportunity to get an early hoard and to help get the $ I want on certain turns. I buy green early and often and my hoards help me keep the buying power needed to stay ahead.

Game 2: ARRRR! Me and Ninja decide to go for pirate ships here while RJ and O go for witch/margraves. RJ and O conspired against us pirate folk and bought 8 estates in 1 turn to make the game 3 pile before our ships could become useful. I never really had a chance in this game as I only had a 4$ mat and got my 2nd ship at like.. turn 10? Ninja however got a 7$ mat and early ships but they unfortunately collided too often.

Game 3: Boring jack/lighthouse game.. nice relaxation from all the attacking chaos though.

Game 4: Still a little flustered by this game. I got everyone in a nasty KC saboteur pin but couldn't really trash O's saboteur which wrecked havoc upon my money sources. 2nd to last turn I used saboteur 6 times but RJ had all his green in his hand. I got trade route 1 turn too late and O helped RJ take the win.

Game 5: Only way to prevent RJ from winning here was for me to get 1st and for him to get last. I go for an ambassador/caravan/goons/WV engine thing but the game ended very quickly from their tunnel/harvest play. Something funny happened towards the end where there were only 9 coppers left and I was forced to buy a bunch of curses off of a double goons turn. I was trying for the 1% chance to win and for RJ to get last but could have easily just taken 2nd overall by buying the coppers.

I don't see any reason why the 3rd place (and frankly 1st place) matches can't be finished up while we're starting up IsoDom 5.  So no problem if you need until the 14th.

Is there a particular set-up/timing/anything that needs to be done for the finals (similar to DS tourney)?  I'm just hammering out the details with DG now.
