"Border Village-Haggler explosion?"

There probably is already a thread for this, but here goes:
Does the Border Village-Haggler explosion really work? The card you gain from Border Village is gained, not bought, and the wording on Haggler says specifically thatwhen you buy a card, you may gain a card costing less than it. Ergo, gain a card less than the card you gained via Border Village is against the rules, right?

Haven't tested it, but I would think that the purchase of a Border Village with Haggler in play would gain you two additional cards costing less than Border Village (whatever price you bought it for). One card for the Border village reaction, and one card for Haggler.

I mention the price of Border Village because if you have a total cost reduction of greater than 5 in play, you gain nothing, as nothing costs "less".

IIRC the whole point of Haggler triggering on buy rather than on gain was to temper the "Border Village-Haggler explosions" that arose in playtesting (and similar issues).

And also multi-Haggler explosions. Or even just a single haggler explosion, really. I don't want all my haggler plays ending up with me taking a copper.

Yeah, when you buy a Border Village with Haggler in play, you gain two cards costing less than a Border Village, and one of them can't be a Victory card.

Unless you buy the Border Village, then gain a card from Haggler, then when you're about to gain the Border Village you reveal a Trader to take a Silver instead, in which case you don't get Border Village's normal card because that would be like petting your purple cat when you were supposed to feed a blue dog, or something.

Anyway it was in the secret history where Donald explained why Haggler was on buy rather than on gain.
