Dominion intrudes on real life

I'm pretty much a geek, but I'll bet many of you can add to these.
  • I drove into the parking lot this morning behind my coworker, who was driving her Envoy. My immediate thought: what should I make her discard?
  • Sometimes I grab a bag of Peanut M&Ms from the vending machine. Since the release of Cornucopia, I've been consuming them strangely. I pour out 5 pieces. If any of them are matching colors, I return the duplicates to the bag. Yesterday, it took me 8 turns to finish the bag.

I posted this in one of the other threads, but every time I see a Dominion card word in real life (village, remodel, bank, market, and colony being fairly common), the card text pops into my head.

When a friend of mine sees a girl he finds attractive, he remarks how he'd like to "Throne Room" or "King's Court" her.

I mainly find it coming into other things when playing other games.  In Notre Dame, I once ran out of tokens, and played a second action without doing anything.  I commented that at least the Peddler cost $4 now.  I was recently forced to play Settlers of Catan (one of my least favorites), and whenever a card matched a Dominion card, I'd pretend like I was executing the action from Dominion.

Not only do I do this, I go a step worse.  Recently I saw "Merchant Vessel" and thought, hey, just one word off.  And when I passed a "Farmer's Market," well, that may not be a card, but I know what it would do if it were.

Sorry. I actually work at The Borthwick Institute for Archives which is attached to the Library at the University of York (UK). But most of that is totally unrelated to Dominion. It's only a temporary job anyway and I'm gonna be unemployed at the end of the month.

Oh boy, were do I start?

Whenever I see or hear a card from Dominion, I see the card in front of me. I've even misheard people just to hear Dominion card names.

Also, a while back I was really tired, and whenever someone spoke to me all I could see was their sentences building up to action chains. Something like this. "Can you answer the phone?" would be "Can(+1 Action) you answer (+2 Action +1 Card) the phone?(+1 Card +1$)" It was really annoying, and I avoided playing the game for a few days.

Also, I saw a picture of Napoleon, and stated "It's Tactician!".

On some of the newer US pennies, instead of the Lincoln memorial on the back, there is a shield.  Let's just say I think the US treasury is copying dominion.

Each of my game nights has either a joke Dominion card, or a Dominion card featuring a regular member with an in-joke attached, for the Facebook invite.  I love the template I found on BGG!

My incoherent thoughts as I fall asleep have become more dominion-y in nature, especially late at night after a long isotropic-sesh.

In particular, I'll conclude that I can't do something I'm thinking about doing IRL tomorrow because I don't have enough actions.

Also, "young witch" tends to put the song YMCA in my head, even hours after a young witch game, because of the first two words of that song. Likewise "city" puts "when the lights go down in the city," duke puts "sir duke" etc etc.

Months ago, I planned two events. First a Jays' Game (MLB Baseball) with some friends, and second I joined a Golf Tourney at work. I never thought anything of it.

I just realized today that the two events will happen on consecutive days (Tourney today and Jays' Game tomorrow). As soon as I realized this, I honstly had the following thought:

"Man, I'm glad those terminals didn't collide".

Funny stuff. I had to come post.

I watch a lot of American series and often enough some words are said which have a meaning in Dominion.

I am catching up on Chuck episodes and the word "Spy" drops like 10 times every show and every time I see the card in my head and mentally decide whether to discard or keep.

Oh, and Village was also quite common for the last episode, how can we hear or see Village and not think +2 Actions anymore?
Funnily enough, a third card name was used in that episode and it was Mint.

The episode was #14 from Season 4 for who'd like to know: Seduction Impossible.

So, the other day I went to a wedding on the beach. During it, the minister called the place, "a chapel by the sea." The whole time all I could think of was making a duration chapel variant. (Luckily there was no bishop, but I still thought of that anyways). As if that wasn't bad enough, it took place on an island. I keep thinking that the end of this vacation is like the end of the game, and then I'll be returned to the "deck", or back to the mainland. Of course, I have to go over a bridge to get back home.

Also, a few days ago I was driving and saw a Ford Explorer in front of me. My immediate thought, "why did you buy that?".

Although chronologically impossible, whoever worked on the Disney version of Aladdin must have had some dominion cards sent back to him by a time traveler.  The opening scene contains a caravan and is narrated by a character known simply as "The Peddler".  Later on in the movie, when Aladdin is parading through the city (lol, another card), the Genie sings "hey, clear the way in the old bazaar", and "who sent those goons to their lord", and "when it comes to exotic-type mammals, has he got a zoo...it's a world class menagerie".  And I didn't even mention the Forty Thieves or Aladdin's Princess.  Who knows, maybe the Sultan in that movie even had a Harem.

Thanks. Knowing how my brain works with earworms, I'm infected for life with that one now.

Only when I sing something from a prompt I tend to do it out loud. The worst one was walking along the road with a box of flake chocolates in my hand singing the flake advert tune without realising it...

Yesterday, I was writing a review of some travel, and when I got to the word island I capitalized it without even slowing down.  It seemed natural, and sort of respectful.

I played a game a few days ago where I stupidly ignored witch on a board with TR and no reaction cards.  You know what happened, and yet I just sort of moved on from the game without internalizing the magnitude of the lesson.  Then yesterday a conversation arose in which the context and subject matter somehow brought to mind Snoopy's (?) expression "Curses! Foiled again!". I had to chuckle at the new perspective.

When trying to be waken up in the morning I say "Just 5 more villages".
When playing Mine Craft for the first time I asked "Wheres the Silver?" (in a multiplayer game). All I got was blank looks all around from my friends =\.
When I hear about Long Island I will often accidentally say "Donald made a new version of Island?"
When I play with a regular deck of cards now and I see Jack I say "Where'd the "Of All Trades" go?"  All I get is blank looks.
When I make a joke about Dominion. All I get is blank looks. -_-'

Listening to the Christmas story in church. They had to stay at the Stables because there was no room at the Inn.

Well, they'll miss the +Actions but they get a net gain of cards as long as they have some money to spare.

Weird. Today I had the same dream except I was chasing someone on a brown horse. I looked down at myself and saw I was the chancellor and then caught up to the person on a horse I was chasing. She was the princess with the Diadem and a bag of gold. Then she gave me a disdainful look, almost as if I had cursed at her. I woke up feeling sorry for myself. Then I realized something, I was in a group of Followers.

Question being, why was I dressed as the chancellor? Does this mean that there is a use of the chancellor afterall? Does it have something to do with the prizes? I'm over thinking it but still, that was crazy.

To bring back this hilarious thread from the grave...
On Saturday, I put in my weekly of laundry. Upon returning upstairs and finding a pair of underwear on the floor, my first thought, I kid you not, was that it would, "miss the reshuffle." I laughed to myself, because it is a surprisingly apt comparison.
Dominion never stops.

Maybe not "real life", but same idea...

I was playing a game of Heroes of Newerth today and one of the guys on the other team chose a hero named "Scout". My first thought was, "Scout? But that's a terrible card..."

What's great is that in that game, Scout is an awful hero. There has to be some of sort of underlying structure in the universe that demands that anything named Scout sucks.

Scouts are also the worst unit in Starcraft. You may be right.

While studying for my Microsoft MCTS 70-511 (Windows Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4) exam I came across the following sentence just now:

Quote from: MCTS 70-511 by Matthew A. Stoecker, Chapter 9, Lesson 3 (page 483)
Dialog boxes are one of the most notable things missing from the WPF menagerie of controls and elements.

It was weird seeing the word menagerie in that context.

Scout is the most underpowered and most fragile of roles in Team Fortress.

Although, it serves a very specific role due to its alacrity. If you play Scout for any reason other than get in and get out, then it's going to be pretty underwhelming*.

* Unless you're against newbies. People who don't know the game can't keep up with a Scout who runs circles around them. Pretty fun.

Scouts in the game Battle for Wesnoth are only for grabbing Villages that give treasures and then using the scout to lure enemy units or die themselves. Yay for having weakest attack and defence!

Scout implies someone who primarily gathers information by quickly moving ahead of a larger traveling and coming back.  Because he is swift and has a nonviolent purpose in a military context, games tend to depict scouts as weak, or only useful for information.  The universe has few coincidences and more correlations.

Scout is only meant to improve your draws, so it signified a card restricted to informational advantage.  It doesn't make any $ or cards and definitely doesn't attack, so it ended up a bad card.  The TF2 scout has light firepower, and high speed, which makes average health a very dangerous balance move in a game like Capture the Flag.  Starcraft scouts are actually scouts, the idea is to look at your enemies army with them.  So they are weak.

Teemo, the Swift Scout is a very weak champion in League of Legends, (could be fixed by now, but he's been weak for the majority of the lifetime of the game).  He has less firepower than other units and less health to go with his scouting theme.  He moves quickly, but it doesn't matter much if he can't fight well.

There's also a Spy in Team Fortress and it corresponds better to Dominion than Scout does. It gives you information about enemy team and if you find a strong opponent (good card) you can eliminate him (discard). You can be found (moat or secret chamber) so you can't do much damage to enemy team.

Other things. Here in Finland there's a shop that sells orcanic products named Runsaudensarvi (Horn of Plenty) and a shop that sells home appliance named Musta Pörssi (Black Market).

The TF2 analogy is a little tortured.  Scout is quite powerful and one of the mainstays of competitive 6v6 because of his speed and damage rampup.  He's balanced because he needs to be in close to do maximum damage, but is weak enough HP-wise that moving in close is difficult to do.

I'm currently reading the Bible through for the 6th time. Do you know how many times it mentions the word "dominion"? A concordance I have shows it 13 times.  (That's kind of ironic seeing my name on isotropic is aaron0013)
I have also found quite a few other words that are found in the old and new testaments including: City, Witch, Familiar, Thief, Spy, Silver, Gold, Duke, Nobles, Tribute, Curse, Gardens, Island, Vineyard, Possession, Feast, Market, Diadem, Harvest, Inn, Steward, Monument, and Ambassador.

When I moved to my city I asked a girl who lived here her two favorite bars and she said "The Bishop and the Garden." Not a Dominion player. Turns out there's a bar called The Courtyard on the same street as those two.

Not really surprising considering the game is based on ancient times.

i read the bible once, the old testament is excellent, but the new is soooo boring

I just turned a page in the novel I'm reading, in the middle of a passage where a prince is musing about the realm he rules; the first line at the top of the page is about how the nation contains "a network of cities and mines and farmlands and trade-routes...".

It seems like every day I find myself behind a Grand Caravan, wondering if it gives 2 cards a turn and costs $5 with no copper or what.

As a cashier, I also see lots of Venture credit cards, which usually hit enough coin to make the target.

Ahh outdated English teacher practices. There is nothing wrong with starting a sentence with 'And' (or even 'But')

If it's good enough for the King James Bible, Shakespeare and Chaucer it's good enough for me!

There is nothing wrong with beginning a sentence with 'And' or 'But', but the sentence you wrote didn't have a subject and verb.

That is because it was an addition to the quoted sentence above, that is why it was quoted. It's like a third person jumping in on a conversation between two other people:

"a network of cities and mines and farmlands and trade-routes...".
"that's not a very good deck"

I was just reading in the Canterbury Tales prologue, and for some reason this stuck out to me as Chaucer is describing the knight:

In fifteen mortal battles had he been--
Crusades against the Turk and Saracen;
And fought in tournaments, and won the prize;

Did he win a trusty steed, or possibly some followers.....surely not a princess!

that just makes me think of NBC TV Series in the 2000's.

I recently bought Crusader Kings II, and as one would expect from a game set in medieval Europe, there are Dominion terms all over the place.  Chancellors and Spies are really important and it's messing with my head. :\

There's a shop in Torrington called Scrying Oracle; I'm sure we can all come up with ideas for what such a card might do.

Finally, they come upon a stone tablet, which contains but one mysterious phrase!

'ISOTROPIC WILL RETURN!'

I just learned of a condo called Kings Court.

It's also the name of a dorm at Penn.

In the mall today, I noticed that 2013 calendars have started appearing, including an artsy one titled "Blue Dog". So if I buy the calendar, and then I take it for a walk ...

And I forgot to mention that I was thinking of taking a photo to post on these boards, but now if I go to take a photo of "Blue Dog", and it isn't there any more, do I still take the photo?

+1 for reading a 10 month old thread.

It was Throne Room, and my GF never failed to match the witch with it, so I got all 10 curses pretty quick. Nowadays, my order of veto priority (after Grand Market) is King's Court, then Throne Room.

My top vetoes are minion and IGG (minion takes the do out of dominion), then swindler, tournament, familiar, and anything else with a stupidly swingy amount of luck.

It's been my experience that Throne Room and Kings Court are swingy, because I draw them dead, she draws them perfect.  I'd rather leave the cursers in and take the curses than leave in TR or KC only to have mine be useless, which they almost always are.

I was working from a Workshop today and built a sort of Fortress with bricks around a compost bin to protect it from Rats, and I couldn't help but think, "Hey, that actually kind of works!"

The other weekend when I finished mowing the grass, I noticed that I'd ended up in a totally different place than I usually end up. Not only that, but the whole rhythm of the mow was off from my usual routine; I have a lot of trees in my yard, for example, and I noticed that I was getting to them at different points in my mow, creating different "islands" of unmowed lawn than usual.

Usually, I mow around the borders of the yard, slowly working my way in. I prefer this method because (like a Dominion game, in fact) you'll think you're nowhere close to being done but before you know it you realize that it's actually almost over. However, this particular day my neighbor was working on his fence and I didn't want to throw grass all over him, so I did two stripes up and down the far side of the yard. After that, he was done with the fence and I took up my usual mowing route, but as I explained it was totally different because of those two stripes.

When I was done, I realized that it reminded me of nothing so much as the beginning of a Dominion game: making a minor change right at the very start profoundly changed the rest of the experience. I know this is a lighthearted topic and I'm not trying to get too profound, but something I've always loved most about learning a new skill, whether it's been sleight of hand or web design or even Dominion strategy, is how learning that skill gives me another way of looking at the world. It's always fascinating how one discipline can inform and enrich other, completely unrelated, aspects of your life, and I hope I never stop learning new things and having these sorts of insights.

(In less of a "that heavy, bro" vein: I also realized the other day that Bryan Ferry was trying to teach me a Dominion combo!)

King's Court is hands down my favourite card. I actually tend to like swingy cards that make the game more unpredictable. I also really like Swindler. And Cursers.

There is a bridge down the street, but we only had one action.  We decided to use the remodel instead.

The other day someone mentioned Judas selling Jesus out for 40 pieces of silver. I find hitting $11 for a Colony hard enough. If I want to buy Jesus I need to hit $40? Seems pretty expensive just to trash him with Trader. Imagine trashing him with an apprentice...

Silver is worth $2.

Judas sold Jesus to a Trader, and gained 40 Silver. Therefore, Jesus's cost in coins is $40.

Yesterday while I was teaching one of my lab sections I heard a student say to another student something along the lines, "You gonna be a Cartographer someday?"

I couldn't help but think that this student was going to be spending much of his life rearranging (reorder clause) some things and completely dropping (discard clause) other things while only doing one (+Card/+Action clause) thing at a time.

I got that, I was just making another joke.  I mean you can remodel a 0 dollar bathroom into a 2 dollar value king's court... but it'd be a pretty lame king's court compared to everyone else who don't live near highways so have a 7 dollar value king's court.
