I understand at the beginning there was an esoteric debate on what constituted an interaction, but at this point they are basically the same thing.  wouldn't it just be easier to have them merge and then look at them both together chronologically?

There wasn't a debate on what constituted an interaction. One of the threads is for strategy advice, the other is for game reports for the people who like to post their game reports in the Dominion General Discussion category instead of the dedicated one.

I believe the Semi-interesting Moments thread has a similar origin story as your first link, and the existence of them both is possibly an even more redundant comparison. (Not fully, just more)

Edit: However you view the sitch, we do owe that thread for the birth of the term “card-shaped thing”.

As I recall, the origin of the second thread was that AdamH was hoping for the first thread to involve strictly real scenarios and not theory-crafting about potential combos, but then too many people were posting general discussion about various potential combos. So the second thread was created not because there was debate over what constituted an interaction, but rather to post only things that actually happened in a real game, thus avoiding tangent discussions about other possible combos that may or may not ever happen in a game.

As you can see from my last post in that second thread, the idea of it didn't quite work out as hoped.

As I recall, AdamH was hoping for the first thread to contain useful advice, which is to say that it was not good enough that it happened in a real game, it would have to be something that could be reasonably expected to happen over and over again in other people's real games too. People posting speculative combos (especially with cards that had just very recently came out and it wasn't plausible that anyone writing the posts could actually give any particularly useful advice about the cards so early) was a part of the problem but the more persistent problem was people posting combos that involved more than two cards, usually after playing a game with those cards. The new thread was made because people wanted to keep doing that, so that there would be a thread in which they were actually welcome to do so.

The good news is now you can't expect anything to happen in a real game so both threads are valid

That's true in the sense that any given individual 2-card combination is much, much less likely to appear than it used to, but any 2-card combination that substantially changes how you should play the kingdom probably appears more often than it used to if anything since newer cards tend to have more impressive effects, so memorizing the entire list gives you an advantage still, it's just a longer list.

Technically, the 3-card combo list is also just a longer list in exactly the same way, but it's ridiculously long and most of the 3-card combos in those threads are something you don't have to memorize because it's obvious enough that you'll see it when you come across the kingdom (which is how the person posting it was able to spot it in that game they just played where it was useful in the first place — which is not to say that you can't ever have an outstanding realization about a non-trivial card interaction during a game, but it is naturally a lot easier to have a regular realization that just about anyone else would have too).
