Kirian's Bracket, Week 2
« on: March 29, 2012, 11:14:51 pm »

Psst... Breakfast is on the Table

This week we will all play matches dominated by Intrigue.  Each match is seven total games.  Make sure that you set Isotropic's filter system to include exactly six cards chosen at random from Intrigue!

Please report your results in this thread.  I'm going to ask you to follow a reporting style much like rspeer's post here but with some small changes.
  • Please make sure the person listed first in the matchups below (or the person on top in the Challonge brackets) is listed first.
  • Please make sure your scores are listed.
  • Don't worry about making your scores a link to the game log, just put it in there on the line. :)
Feel free to add further commentary, but please put it after these opening lines!

Please have your match completed by 18:00 GMT Thursday 05 April.  Good luck and have fun!

If you wish to play future matches, feel free to do so... but wait to post the results in that week's thread. :)

That actually makes me more sad that I was placed in the central, rather than mountain, group. I'm a big Colorado Avalanche fan.

O defeats Dghunter79 4-3

Game 1: O-38, Dghunter79-40
Game 2: O-40, Dghunter79-31
Game 3: O-37, Dghunter79-45
Game 4: O-45, Dghunter79-34
Game 5: O-24, Dghunter79-22
Game 6: O-28, Dghunter79-38
Game 7: O-31, Dghunter79-24

--Go-broke-for-swindler game. I get more golds, he gets more silvers. He tries to go Duke, which is usually a mistake with swindler on the board (accelerated game if it hits province + swindle a duchy for lots of VP)

Coppersmith IGG sneaks by upgrade IGG-> Fairgrounds. If he bought one more variety card before I threepiled i'd have a hard time coming back from the 6VP Fairgrounds. I won the IGG split handily, which helped.

5: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120329-222905-2747f8b2.html
Hands down the best comeback of my tournament so far. My Courtyard-Baron doesn't fare well against silver-Baron (he doesn't miss), then my goons hits the reshuffle. Dghunter has a clear lead and starts trying to 3pile when I buy a second goons out of desperation (its not really a goons engine game, or at least my engine wasn't set up). Turn 15 I'm 12 VP down. Turn 16 I hit goons-Province for 8VP, returning goons with scheme. Turn 17 I hit double goons with exactly the right amount of cash to 3pile out with a 2 VP lead.

6: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120329-223602-2e51e832.html

His Ironworks-Hunting Party beats my Coppersmith-Hunting Party because he can use the Ironworks to gain a tiebreaker.

7: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120329-224007-1da737ce.html

I get an extra gold over his market in Masquerade-BM and win the province split.

Kirian-

For "playing forward" (Which I think will be very handy, given trying to coordinate schedules in a six-day period), can we assume the "theme" will be always 6 cards in the desired set? And the sets will move forward in chronological order from when they were released?

Swindlers are liars and jerks.  Dukes are pillars of the community.

Ghost Ships are also jerks.  You all died of scurvy, OK, get over it.

I really, really wished for IGG->Upgrade->Fairgrounds to be better than IGG->Duchy.  But there were no 3s, so Upgrade wasn't that useful in increasing variety, and my Fairgrounds died on 14.

This was annoying.  I started trying for the 3-pile a little early, and he hit a nice hand.

His Ironworks-Hunting Party beats my Coppersmith-Hunting Party because he can use the Ironworks to gain a tiebreaker.

I'd never seen a board like this before -- Hunting Party with no attacks, no +buy, and no trashing.  Ironworks seemed like the only card that granted any kind of an edge in the Province race, but I still wasn't sure if I should open with it.  Being able to Ironworks Silvers was more useful then I would have guessed, and I got the better of the HP split.

I bought the penultimate province.  Shut up, that's why.

Game 5
Log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/30/game-20120330-121848-64b1acf6.html
Insomniac-X 37-28 Tmoiy
These scores are actually reversed.

Quick summaries from me:

Game 1: FV/Torturer game; he got some Golems while I used Ironworks to grab Great Halls. Neither of us are paying enough attention to the score, so we tie.
Game 2: Swindler game. I think I made slightly better $5 choices here.
Game 3: An IGG game as second player, and his Swindler kept discarding my Militia.
Game 4: We both opened HT/Silver, but he went for Minions while I did Nobles/Great Hall/Silk Road. The alternate VPs were too strong to overcome here, and HT is a nice counter to Minion.
Game 5: We both opened Trading Post and grabbed an Ironworks for Mining Villages and Bishops. My Library may have made the difference here.
Game 6: Ridiculous KC game. I repeatedly misclicked on his Envoy thinking that it was a Masquerade (which he never actually bought). This helped him get a big lead; my flailing attempts to recover with Masquerade and Saboteur didn't work out.
Game 7: I stupidly chose Ghost Ship over Shanty Town/Torturer. My Ghost Ships made his Shanty Towns much better than normal and I lose.

Thanks for the games!

You're being way to modest to Horse Traders here.  Horse Traders is the perfect counter to minion  :)

Yuma beats perdhapley 4 - 3

perdhapley 76 - yuma 51
perdhapley 4 - yuma 19
perdhapley 27 - yuma 21
perdhapley 37 - yuma 28
perdhapley 35 - yuma 46
perdhapley 43 - yuma 52
perdhapley 34 - yuma 45

Game 1: Masquerade was the key card here, and ultimately winning the Nobles race is what won me this game. Close one throughout.
Game 2: Surprisingly, the only game here that revolved around attacks. University/Torturer, I get distracted by trying to incorporate Ironworks/Conspirator, and yuma builds a better economy, picking up a couple Provinces before the inevitable three pile ending.
Game 3: I'm pretty happy with the way I played this game, but it could've gone differently had it not been waaay sped up by yuma's unfortunate Swindler timing - he hits two of my provinces, dramatically speeding up the endgame.
Game 4: Ha, this game. yuma opens 5/2 and picks up Embassy, immediately making it clear that this one will be fast, and I grab Baron, hoping that I'll get a bit of shuffle luck to compensate. I get more than that, and this one basically plays itself, with absolutely perfect shuffle luck for me at every turn - I get Provinces on turns 6, 7, 8, AND 9, and the game is over in 12.
Game 5: Insane set that ends up dominated by Jack. The first of two straight Duke games in which their presence makes things very tricky. I think I got outplayed here, which is what usually happens to me when I stray from DoubleJack. I would love some advice on this one if anybody has any; where did I go wrong? I think it starts with my Mining Village buy and gets worse when I take double festival with $10 and two buys, but I'm not sure.
Game 6: And I definitely got outplayed here. My plan was to jump quickly to the first Province via Baron and grab Prizes. I pick up Smugglers in case it turns into a Duke game, but have no real plan for ending the game and eventually my economy collapses. Poor foresight by me, and yuma takes a deserved win to tie up the set.
Game 7: Waaay different strategies once again, a theme of this series. Another theme of this series: yuma builds effective buying power and my grand engine plans just aren't fully formed enough from the beginning. My ultimate plan of Pawn > Conspirator > Outpost > big double-turns just isn't effectively executed, and yuma's consistent draw power and strong economy are just too much to overcome.

Thanks to yuma for a great set! I definitely made some mistakes here, especially in the second half of the series, but I enjoyed how much our strategies differed throughout - there really wasn't a single mirror match here. For some reason I get a bit nervous and play more erratically in these tournament series, and it really cost me in this one, where yuma's strategies were much more consistent throughout, while mine just kinda fell apart. Great play by him here, it was fun!

Edit: I wanted to make a comment about the Intrigue factor. It seemed to me that the key Intrigue cards in this series were Baron, Nobles, Duke and Conspirator - those are the four that seemed to show up most often, and had the biggest impact on the sets. For me, Nobles in particular, which determined game one and then had a huge impact on games 6 (where I rush for it and neglect Gold) and 7 (where letting my opponent at it is a huge mistake). Duke was also important, adding a unique tension to the games it showed up in. Interestingly, the only time Minion showed up it was irrelevant. We both commented that Intrigue isn't a favorite set for either of us, but that it had a much different effect on the series than either of us expected.

My quick take:

I really liked how in almost every game we had different strategies, very little mirroring.

Game 1: perdhapley 76 - yuma 51 The only game where we mirrored for the most part. My biggest mistake greening too early buying a Colony on turn 9 instead?

Game 2: perdhapley 4 - yuma 19 I think the crux of this game came down to who won the Torturer war. I won 6/4 and thus won the curse war 6/4. As such the critical buy seemed to be perhapley's Conspirator buy on turn 8 when he could have bought a Torturer.

Game 3: perdhapley 27 - yuma 21 He had a great strategy. I had one card of 6 different action types meaning I lacked any strategy at all.

Game 4: perdhapley 37 - yuma 28 Frustrating game for me. Wish I hadn't bought the haven with $2 because that would have meant getting a good chance of a turn 3 gold. O well.

Game 5: perdhapley 35 - yuma 46 Would have been a lot more interesting w/o Jack as it effectively counters against both Torturer and Minion. We talked a bit about what we would have gone for in Jack's absence.

Game 6: perdhapley 43 - yuma 52 I got lucky with this. I started out thinking along the lines of Tournament but quickly realized I was going to lose if I continued that way and made a shaky transition to Dukes. A Rabble buy and a Baron buy and I found myself pulling it off somehow.

Game 7: perdhapley 34 - yuma 45 I played the simple, boring strategy but won because Perdhapley's beautiful engine just couldn't quite lift off. If he had better Outpost draws I would have been trounced.

Really enjoyed the games, more than the base ones... no offense to Mad Mergus, but Intrigue is just well... more intriguing. But really looking forward to the other sets as well...

michaeljb 27 - CarpeDeezNuts 47: Masquerade + a couple Nobles > Masquerade + more Nobles with Shanty Town
michaeljb 33 - CarpeDeezNuts 41: Masquerade, Harem, and IGG. That's about it.
michaeljb 58 - CarpeDeezNuts 46: 2 Vaults + Money (Harems) and Islands; Thief played once for the Gold steal and Vault discard, not enough to swing the game
michaeljb 73 - CarpeDeezNuts 56: Trader/Gardens/Duke against Minions + mostly Treasure
michaeljb 54 - CarpeDeezNuts 38: Monuments + Courtyard > Monuments + Trading Post after Embargoed IGG and Torturer
michaeljb 29 - CarpeDeezNuts 3: Jack + Witch into swingy King's Court shenanigans
michaeljb 12 - CarpeDeezNuts 23: Another Witch game, Masquerades not enough to fight back

Overall I felt like these boards weren't as interesting as what I saw in the Base set games, something I wasn't really expecting. I was disappointed there wasn't any real chance to build crazy cool engines. The last game there sort of was, but Nobles were the only village and CarpeDeezNuts got the Witch with the 5/2, and he also went after the Caravans much more aggressively, which turned out to be the right move given the (lack of) speed of that game.

[MAD] Mergus beats tlloyd 4 games to 3.

Game 1: tlloyd 37 - [MAD] Mergus 38
We split the Nobles and Wharves, but I only draw $7 on my last turn, which lets him buy the last Estate for the 1-point win.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-150639-0962d79c.html

Game 2: tlloyd 20 - [MAD] Mergus 4
We initially split the Conspirators, but I Swindle four of his into Moneylenders.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-152100-7a0845bf.html

Game 3: tlloyd 24 - [MAD] Mergus 59
We both grab Masquerade. I try to pound the IGGs before he can grab a Possession, but I fail. I wait in vain for a chance to pass my Masq to him. Instead I have Masq in hand every time he plays Possession. The Duke/Duchy race gets lopsided quickly.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-153411-75d55312.html

Game 4: tlloyd 44 - [MAD] Mergus 22
We split the Minions, but my Saboteur keeps his deck off the pace.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-154544-12d9b403.html

Game 5: tlloyd 32 - [MAD] Mergus 34
We both envision using Ironworks to build a Conspirator deck with Throne Rooms, Nobles and Bridges. His deck outperforms mine consistently, for reasons I'm still unsure of.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/31/game-20120331-155829-4ccf283c.html

Game 6: tlloyd 44 - [MAD] Mergus 28
Another Conspirator game, this time with University. He gets more Conspirators but I get more Wishing Wells, so I get out to an early lead. I then donate my lands to the Bishop before they can be Sabotaged.

Game 7: tlloyd 26 - [MAD] Mergus 37
Horse Traders is an effective counter to Minion, but you still have to know how to play it. My elaborate strategy is too clever by half and is nearly half the speed of his straightforward Minion deck.

Thanks for the games [MAD] Mergus!

Thank you too tlloyd. Pretty much everything said about the games, I don't have to add much. In game 2 I had the same plan as you (get more than 1 Swindler after first Province), but never really got to a Province and then had to see how almost all my Conspirators became Moneylenders. Not a good job-change decision to make in this game.

Game 5 felt extremely close in the end because of the three pile ending threat, where I thought that it's a safe win in the middle of it.

Good luck for your remaining games.

antony 5 (10 pts), ednever 2 (4 pts)
1. ednever 34, antony 33 Pawns give the winning extra buy in a fairly even minion/conspirator game.
2. antony 15, ednever 1 Young witch > minion when the bane is duchess.
3. ednever 53, antony 44 Minions prefer going to the harem rather than working with nobles.
4. antony 27, ednever 24 Swindler luck.
5. ednever 12, antony 17 IGG game is decided by duchies, not by golds (and an initial 5/2 helps... a lot).
6. ednever 56, antony 70 Dukes, stables, baron.  Do you go for dukes immediately or just as support?  Anyways harem was clearly a poor choice.
7. ednever 42, antony 51 After cleaning up the decks with TR'ed ambassadors, moneylenders and TPs, some gold is more useful than harems to grab the extra provinces.

coheed wins 4 (8 points) over Jorbles (6 points)
1. coheed: 32 vs Jorbles: 65
2. coheed: 24 vs Jorbles: 12
3. coheed: 56 vs Jorbles: 24
4. coheed: 50 vs Jorbles: (resigned)
5. coheed: 24 vs Jorbles: 17
6. coheed: 50 vs Jorbles: 72
7. coheed: 9 vs Jorbles: 11

1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-171641-a8d3968b.html
Key Cards: Colony, Platinum, Tactician, Steward, Nobles, Secret Chamber
I get off to a start I'm comfortable with. I don't like coheed's opening (Tactician/Secret Chamber), but end up picking up a both cards myself later in the game. coheed spends too much time trimming Coppers out of his deck (with Steward and a Spice Merchant) and by the time he's got his deck humming I'm way ahead on Colonies and Platinums.

2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-172445-1a01848f.html
Key Cards: University, Minion, Festival, Shanty Town, Golem, Bridge
I stupidly decide to mirror coheed from second player in a University rush for Minions. Not sure if there was a better strategy, but I probably should have looked for one because combined with some unfortunate shuffle luck he had 5 Minions before I managed to get one. Once that happened, it was pretty much decided.

3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-173145-84a63d67.html
Key Cards: City, Hunting Party, Bridge, Trading Post
I try for a simple Hunting Party engine with Trading Post to trim the Coppers and Estates out of my deck. coheed sees the potential of Bridge/City and decides to go for that combo. I feel comfortable for awhile racking up 4 Provinces, until he finally whittles down the Hunting Parties and Cities and proceeds to obliterate me in a super turn.

4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-174327-d6494155.html
Key Cards: Witch, Minion, Scrying Pool, Steward, Bridge, Conspirator, Harem
I try to do something fancy when I shouldn't and get my ass handed to me in this blowout. coheed gets a lucky $5 opening picking up a Witch (smart). I get excited about building a Minion/Conspirator/Scrying Pool/Bridge engine and decide that Steward is good enough to counter the Curses that will be coming into my deck (stupid). I like my deck if this hadn't been a Curse game, but by the time I had my deck going he had locked up half the points on the board even though he was struggling to close out the Provinces. So I resigned.

5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-175931-4da2f3d5.html
Key Cards: Torturer, Conspirator, Wishing Well, Nobles, Remake, Expand
Not seeing any cheap Villages I decide Torturer isn't going to be an issue (wrong) coheed builds a Nobles/Torturer chain, that isn't amazing. It takes him awhile to build it up, but it's enough to win him the game. I do manage to get my Conspirator/Wishing Well/Nobles engine going, but it's nothing to write home about and, by the time it gets going, coheed is able to easily end the game on piles by buying up the Curses.

6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-180949-c0c4bf5d.html
Key Cards: Colony, Governor, Minion, Secret Chamber, Ironworks, Island, Masquerade
A little despondent to have lost 4 straight games and the set I was glad to see this board. I like the Island/Ironworks combo to start (I open Masquerade/Ironworks) and coheed misses it (he opens Masquerade/Silver) at the start and ends up following my lead later in the game. I also like Governor's draw combined with Minions, though I never end up playing it. coheed ends up picking up a Secret Chamber, which kills some of his key hands in the midgame as things like this happened a few times:
Jorbles plays Minion
coheed reveals a Secret Chamber
coheed puts two Governors on top of his deck (betting that I'll be ditching my hand)
Jorbles takes $2 (leaving coheed with a garbage hand)
coheed's Governor play ended up flooding my hands with extra cards too, which greatly helped me. I felt pretty comfortable throughout this one even though I had to pass him some Silvers with Masquerade a couple times.

7: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/02/game-20120402-181925-30dd1b46.html
Key Cards: Familiar, Saboteur, Steward, Caravan, City
coheed opens Saboteur/- and I open Steward/Potion gunning for Familiars. His Sab, manages to hit my first Potion, but I rebuy and eventually I'm rewarded by flooding his deck with Curses. His Saboteur is exceptionally annoying, but playing it hurts his economy as much as mine and once I start putting Curses into his deck I get to catch up. coheed mounts a comeback buying Cities up anticipating the end of the Curse pile. Luckily for me Caravans are low enough that I can sneak the third-pile once he activates his Cities and falls $1 short of being able to tie it.

Phew. What a match, it was quickly apparent that coheed was much better with Intrigue than I am as I only managed to win games that relied on cards from other sets (Colony games and the Familiar game). I felt like I had some bad early shuffle luck in game 2, but aside from that he completely outplayed me in his victories. GGs coheed.

Titandrake (4 points) loses to shark_bait (10 points) 2-5

Titandrake 30 - shark_bait 25
Titandrake 29 - shark_bait 47
Titandrake 23 - shark_bait 38
Titandrake 28 - shark_bait 35
Titandrake 25 - shark_bait 34
Titandrake 13 - shark_bait 9
Titandrake 49 - shark_bait 53

Game 1: Jack-BM, except I get better Tournament luck.

Game 2: I plan for Apprentice-Hoard-Woodcutter, but feel I have to block Fool's Gold. Partway through I realize that Hoard gaining extra Golds makes Fool's Gold collisions less likely, so I try to transition but it's far too awkward. shark_bait buys Duchies very early, I'm forced to respond by buying some of my own (or am I? I was down on Provinces.), and then I can't buy Estates because of the threat of a FG/Duchy/Estate 3-pile. Without ways to gain Gold off Hoard I fizzle, and shark_bait gets the 3-pile.

Game 3: I try some janky Treasure Map/Embargo-Gold strategy with little trashing. I don't see any other strategy besides Cache-Duke, which dies to Embargo, so I decide to try something silly. Maps don't collide until turn 14, and Cache-BM with some Stewards wins. Embargo also bites me back when Treasure Map gets Embargoed. Should have picked up Ironworks to gain more maps, but Cache makes the Embargo-Gold not terribly useful anyways.

Game 4: I plan on Masq-BM, and pick up a 2nd Masq to respond to Mountebank. I get worried, so I pick up a Mountebank as well, and promptly have horrible horrible collisions. Straightforward Jack-Mount-BM wins, although I'm interested whether 2 Masq-BM should beat it.

Game 5: Goons game. I make some questionable Swindler decisions (Quarry vs Baron). I pick up Torturers, but with Shanty Town as the only +Action this might not have been the right call. I lose early Goons to Swindler and lose 2 more on later turns, and after a double-Goons turn from shark_bait I can't catch up enough.

Game 6: Labs, Hamlets, Bridges, Courtyards, Ironworks...A very silly Bridge game. Not that Bridge, the Dominion one. Anyway, shark_bait gets 5/2, which I feel is worse than the 4/3. I trash my deck with Steward, pick up some engine components with Ironworks (gaining Labs after playing a Bridge is nice), and after a good turn get a very early 3-pile for the win.

Game 7: I start off deciding to play Courtyard-BM, planning to outrace Dukes. After a few turns I realize that with Hoard, Duke is going to be much faster, so I transition into Dukes. My deck is not quite as well set-up for Dukes (no Bureaucrat, only 1 Hoard), so I lose. Interested in whether Courtyard-BM beats Bureaucrat-Duke, and whether Bureaucrat/Courtyard beats Bureaucrat/Silver for Duke games.

It was an interesting set (well, besides game 1), and it was nice playing with you :)

Alright here are my additions to what Titandrake described.

Game 2:  My early Apprentice helped immensely.  I was able to trash Estates and increase the chance of having my FG collide.

Game 3:  This game showcases the game-warping aspect of Embargo.  With my 5/2, Duchy/Duke is my 1st thought with Cache support.  But I felt rather sure that they'd be Embargoed, still my plan was to open that and see how the game progressed.  As expected, Duchies were embargoed, but my Embargo of the Treasure Maps hurt my opponent immensely.  If he had opened IW, I think he would have done much better.

Game 5:  I think his Torturer was a mistake.  It never passed out a curse that I couldn't immediately trash and when I discarded, it's effect was null because I either had 2 junk cards or he played a Goon's afterward that then had no effect.  I also got very lucky in swindling 3 of his Goons.

Game 6:  I do think that 4/3 is better here, but I still think I messed up the opening.  Possibly Lab/Hamlet would have been better?  That would start the engine components much faster after picking up an IW and Bridge or two.

All in all, it was a fun set where ironically, I got 2 JoaT games in this series.  Last series I had 2 Hamlet/Vineyard games.  So I'm wondering what non featured set will sneak in a couple of games next series?  Hopefully not double IGG  ;)

Is quite curious - Who is the mystical "Celestial Chameleon"?

greatexpectations beats rspeer 4-3 (8 match points - 6 match points).

I got to go first. Here are my comments, with length proportional to how interesting the set was:
greatexpectations 25 - rspeer 37: Pearl Diver is a fun bane card, especially with Upgrade
greatexpectations 36 - rspeer 24: Having Lighthouses, I voluntarily lost the Minion split. Bad plan.
greatexpectations 37 - rspeer 52: Ironworks/Great Hall isn't that cool
greatexpectations 19 - rspeer 24: IGG rush with Bridge
greatexpectations 34 - rspeer 21: Turn 11 decides the entire game! I was thoroughly hoodwinked by that second Masquerade. I had to pass him my only card left in hand, a Gold.
greatexpectations 57 - rspeer 12: This board was made for the Highway/Market mega-turn. He was faster.
greatexpectations 49 - rspeer 39: Schemed Ghost Ships, Duke race, anticlimax
