2 player variant with lower supply sizes

Hello Dominion players,

we play this game as two players and found it a bit stale, hunting down provinces as primary goal. So i was thinking about the following:

Reduce supply stacks sizes to 8.

What i try to achieve with this rule:
Dominion can end with 3 empty stacks or empty province stack.

For us it happens very rarely that we have 3 empty stacks. Curses and sometimes even another stack is empty. But three... almost never.

I want to encourage play for getting lower cost VP cards instead of provinces.

Could this be worthwhile?
Have there been same / similar suggestions?

I think that the game would be better if Kingdom piles had a size of 12 such that you could scale it equally with player count, i.e. 4 copies per player in 2P as well as 3P.

You can play however you like. As you said, 3 pile will be more likely if you reduce the pile sizes. Engines become also slightly weaker.

@Segura: Yes, you got the idea and even generalized it.

Funny thing though. We thought in our very first games, that this was the offical rule, 8 cards by 2 player, 10 by 3, 12 by 4. Since we misread that 8 was only referring to the victory point cards.

3-pile endings become more and more common at higher and higher skill levels of play. I would say around 30% of games I play end with 3-piles emptying, and honestly sometimes I think 4-pile endings would be more balanced. I think the reason you are not experiencing many 3-pile endings, is that you and the people you are playing with are not leveraging it as a winning strategy to its full potential. 8-card piles in 2 player games would be especially brutal, as instead of a 4-6 split if you lose the split, you have a 3-5 split, and basically the person with 5 cards from a pile has far too large an advantage. If anything, the supply should be raised, not lowered.
