weekly fan card contest ideas (for future contests)

It seems possible that someone who wins the weekly fan card contest may not have a good idea for what the next weekly contest should be, so they can look here for ideas. Post your suggestions below.

my ideas / requests(?) for future weekly card contests:
- a kingdom treasure card that doesn't cost $5 (because the majority of kingdom treasure cards cost $5, and it seems to be easiest to make them balanced for that price point).
- an attack card whose attack part cannot be exactly the same as the attack part in any official card. (new junk cards are allowed)
- a card using mechanics from two different expansions (like VP tokens and Horses or Coffers and Ruins or a Night/Reserve card)

(I'm posting this because I haven't won any of the weekly contests and am honestly not sure if I want to, because then I'd have the responsibility of judging the next one. I aim to get 2nd place...)

If I may add some:
- Either a spirit, or a card that gains spirits, or both
- An action that will play itself (Black cat, falconer, village green, noble brigand, not cultist since cultist doesn't play itself, but another copy)
- A card with an heirloom that isn't a treasure

Of course I am saving my best idea if I win (might be a while)

- a heirloom for an existing card
- a card that uses an existing card as a heirloom
- a treasure that costs
- a card that thematically fits it's name

An heirloom for an existing card was literally last week's contest...

 - A combination of two types or a type and a cost that doesn't exist on any official cards (Examples: Night-Reserve, Reserve-Reaction, 6-cost Reaction, 1-cost anything except pure action or shelters, 2-cost projects, debt-cost projects and so on)
 - A card that lets you do something several times. (Examples: Throne Room, Remake, Scepter)

and "existing card as heirloom" was contest 37.

- A card that lets you do something several times. (Examples: Throne Room, Remake, Scepter)
this was contest 58

- a card using mechanics from two different expansions (like VP tokens and Horses or Coffers and Ruins or a Night/Reserve card)

This was contest 13

incidentally, the list of existing contests can be found here.

I personally would like to see the following:
• Design a Potion-cost card (taking into account the existing literature on Potion-costs) (side note: how has this not been a contest yet?)
• Design a card that is modified by a central / non-player-owned resource
• Design a Duration that stays in play
• Design a card with the Pass mechanic
• Design a card with a choice
• Design a Thief variant
• Design a Cost reducer
• Design a card that uses the Journey token

in general, I think it's probably fine to repeat a contest provided it was at least like, 40 contests (~ a year) ago. Different people on the board, different perspectives, older people on the board getting more experience designing, etc.

- A Night card that lets your return to your buy phase
- A card that plays in it's own phase, and the phase to play that card in
- A vanilla card that is different from any existing card (and named thematically)
- A card that has a * cost
- A card that uses one of the Seaside mats
- A card with choices
- A card that changes depending on cards in the supply

A Victory card that would fit thematically in Menagerie
A Reaction with a new trigger, like Patron
A Way that uses another set's mechanics
A Landmark/Event/Project that would fit in a set without them.
A non-attack Curser/Hexer
A Reaction-Attack
A Victory card split pile
A Castle-like split pile where every card is different, but not VP
A short traveler line (to be simpler)
A Night card that has to do with Potions
A way of playing a Horse without returning it
A Gathering-type card
A card that gathers tokens but functions differently than normal gathering cards
This is simply too much fun
A thanksgiving/fall themed card
A thematic card
A card that would belong in the Base set
A card that would belong in the Cornucopia/Guilds mixed box if it was a single set
A lab variant for $2 (somehow)
A card using Spoils
A village that you don't want to spam
A $7 or more cost card
An overpay card
Somebody make me stop
A weird debt cost card
A spirit and a card to get it
A Victory-Attack
A discard your hand card like Minion or Scholar
Weird cost cards like Animal Fair
A card that combos with Capitalism in a way that breaks the game completely
A card or card-shaped thing that gives a reason to trash Provinces/Colonies
An Attack that hands out Gold to each player

A non-Action, non-Treasure, non-Night card, i.e. a pure Reaction, a Reaction-Reserve, or something like that
contest 33

A Landmark/Event/Project that uses an Artifact
Anything that uses an Artifact
contests 12, 47
A card that utilizes gathering style mechanics, like Sinister Plot
sinister plot has unique token piles for everyone, how's that a gathering-style mechanic?

A christmas themed card
Contest 55 was like this

A one-shot like Pillage or Experiment
Contest 26

A $1 cost card
Contest 27

I guess I just mean any card that gathers tokens into a pile or piles.

A Duration card that can stay in play for more than two turns, but isn't guaranteed to stay out forever.
A Treasure - Action.
A card that uses both Villagers and Coffers.
A card with a while-this-is-in-play effect.
A Militia variant.
A card that gives you at least +2 Buys and makes you want to use all of them.
Make me skip King's Court.

I think the majority view is that potions costs are not a fun mechanic. (I happen to agree with this view)

For what my penny is worth, my ideas have included:

Create a new token
Something that changes card types
Something that lets you play a card in another phase
A card that costs more than $8
Create a (lab) variant
Create a card with x theme
Create a card that alters the use of a resource (like diadem or spend coffers for something else, etc)
A card that changes how another card is played (like enchantress)

I also enjoy coming second!

that may be, but designing potion-cost cards lets you break the rules in fun ways; there's a ton of design space there, you can really just, go wild.

Some ideas I have had.

- A card that has a different cost to all official cards. Costs can be in coins, potions, debt or any combination of them.
- A card that cares about empty piles, i.e. Poacher, City, Tower, Paddock, etc.
- A card that does something different the second time you play it a turn. Cards that use the journey token are an example, but so are Crossroads and Bank, etc.

Create a new token
Contest 5

Depends on what you mean by "new token." Contest 5 was to make a new consumable token type that uses the coin tokens a la Coffers and Villagers. But I think what Marpharos meant by "create a new token" was create a new token that gets placed on piles or can be given out by attacks a la the Adventures tokens.

a card that cares about evens & odds (like Idol)
a victory card with an <8>-debt cost
a card that rewards either total diversity or total homogeneity, ("reveal your hand; if all the cards have the same name..." or similar), but not in-between cases
an Iron-* card (cares about Action, Treasure, and Victory card types)
design an Action-Attack-Duration card that does a "until your next turn" unique effect (see Swamp Hag, Enchantress, Gatekeeper, Haunted Woods, etc)

How about
- a card that makes an oblique cultural reference (eg "Noble Brigand" emulating Robin Hood)
- a card that requires a different version / behaves differently depending on the number of players in the game (credit: spineflu for suggesting this on one of my cards).
- a card that requires an unusual pile size (eg: "Rats" having 20 cards in the supply), or interacts with a non-supply pile or deck of unusual size (Tournament, Black Market) (wdc #108)

A card shaped thing that interacts with one of these Horse variants:

Quote
Donkey - $3*
Action
+1 Card
+1 Action
+$1
Return this to its pile.

(This is not in the Supply.)

Donkey is to peddlers what Horse is to Laboratory. Perhaps more interesting is Mule:

Quote
Mule - $0*
Action
+1 Action
+$1
Return this to its pile.

(This is not in the Supply.)

(Talk about disappearing money). Halfway between Donkey and Snow. Is it junk, taken as a penalty? Can it useful?

I don't know if it will fit for a contest, but how about online only cards? like a card that takes a card from your deck without looking at it or a card with limited number of uses for example

For the first one, it doesn't seem to me like there's any reason that could only be online.  You could have something like "Shuffle your deck, then take the top card ..." There's already precedent for cards that cause you to shuffle your deck without the discard pile

The second one I definitely agree wouldn't work very well IRL (I can think of a few ways to do it, but all of them would be rather inconvenient)

I was thinking in something like draw an action from your deck, or some specific card like silver.

I don't know if it will fit for a contest, but how about online only cards? like a card that takes a card from your deck without looking at it or a card with limited number of uses for example

This is a potentially interesting idea. Every 6-8 months or so I forget why I stopped playing Hearthstone the last time and go back to it for a day or two, and I'm always a little surprised when one of my cards changes in my hand or my deck; and not just the cost, but the cards' strength/abilities can change. That game has other mechanics that are seemingly impossible to do with physical cards.

Some of those mechanics like "discover" (which gives you three choices from a larger pool of potential cards, and "creates" a copy of the one you choose) actually have pretty effective equivalents the game (see Black Market). Similarly, the pile Tokens from Adventures has the effect of making cards in your deck/hand stronger.

For the first one, it doesn't seem to me like there's any reason that could only be online.  You could have something like "Shuffle your deck, then take the top card ..." There's already precedent for cards that cause you to shuffle your deck without the discard pile
I was thinking in something like draw an action from your deck, or some specific card like silver.

While "draw your next Action card" could be simulated with a mechanic like the ones in Venture/Golem (digging through your deck until you find one), there could a couple of reasons you wouldn't want to do it that way: (1) if you had a strong reason not to be churning through the deck (I'm not sure what it is, but it is at least possible), and (2) if you didn't want to know what the Action card was. You could imagine a card that pulled the top 3 Treasures from your deck, and set them aside to give you next turn. Not knowing what they were could be a way to balance such a card (since it would prevent you from knowing what you got, and whether, for example, you should play a Bridge Troll to maximize the following turn). However, I'm not sure either of those are going to be compelling enough reasons to make a card online only.

I see two clear ways online only would be substantially justified. Freddy10 mentioned one of them:

or a card with limited number of uses for example

As mxdata said, a card that has more than one and fewer than unlimited uses (e.g. something between a Horse and a Lab) would be extremely easy to do with an online-only card, and fairly onerous (though not technically impossible) IRL.

The other obvious reason to make a card online only is to avoid the problems that can arise around issues accountability. This is discussed in Item 15 of the "Fan Card Creation Guide" and makes, for example, a card that you would be required to play if it were in your hand not feasible, because there is no way for other players to hold you accountable if you don't. Online, the server knows all, and can force you to follow a card's rules without the other players knowing.

Similarly, you could have cards that, for example, change their position in your deck without anyone knowing exactly where they are, or which replace themselves while in your deck with a random card without you knowing. You could have a junker which puts a random $2 or $3 Action card on top of your opponent's deck, which might screw them up or which might be a harmless (or even helpful) Pawn/Villager.
