Galzria, what does Brazil have to do with pudding? And what was the last word for peel?

Sorry y'all that game was not a good one for me. Here is the board:

BERMUDAROOTINFLUENZAPLOTWHIP
PLASTICKNIFECROSSDEGREETEMPLE
OILFILMAFRICAMILKBUCK
WELLORANGEEAGLEBREADMARK
FILESCUBA DIVERMARBLEMAMMOTHBRAZIL

My clues:

Bioterrorism: 3 - Influenza, Plot, and then Mark (like a target)... probably should of kept that one at 2.

Petroglyph: 3 - Mammoth, Marble, and Temple was my intended 3rd target.

Arab 3: Yeah so this one sucked to try to piece together. I had to clue up for 4 words (so pretty much HAD to come up with a 3 clue, or go infinite I guess, but there was nothing there for that).... You had previously mentioned Mammoth and Marble, and then Temple had not come up. I still needed to clue Eagle just 100% all together, so that was the one I had to connect.
Also, since I was fairly confident you would open Mammoth like 100% of the time, I was thinking if I could find a way to throw Marble in as like an actual 3rd that would be great! That did not happen though.
Only thing I could think of was the Eagle on the Egypt Flag. I needed to clue Temple in to make sure you got it, and I was afraid by putting Egypt it would immediately lead to Africa. So from there it was just trying to come up with something that maybe possibly would beat an africa guess and get it to temple... but yeah. you all did great I just set us up for a hard spot.

Peel: 3 - Knife, Orange, Oil. The first two you got. The oils of most fruit (especially citrus) are in the peels. Citrus oil is used in many things. Bread was on my mind as a far reach, but not enough to clue it.

Jaws: 2 - Film, Scuba Diver. This was risky with Bermuda being the assassin. Bermuda was very clearly the third most likely option here, so if you didn’t get these in order... but you got it!

Pudding: 3 - Milk, Bread, Brazil. Brazil has a fairly popular Milk Pudding Dessert (Pudim de leite condensado). I wasn’t certain either of you would know it, but I didn’t want you looking for missed words if I only clued 2. Ideally, I was hoping you would go Whip as a neutral 3rd instead of landing on one of theirs. Ah well!

After the petroglyph => oil connection that Scola and I considered, what do people think about combining words to form a clue?

As a clearer example, if I wanted to clue SHEEP and ATTACHMENT, could I give the clue "Ramshackle: 2"? Ram=>Sheep and Shackle=>Attachment.
My view is no.

I'm not sure. I don't think there's that many cases where the singular components point to something that the compound doesn't already point to. To use another example from this game, how do you feel about the clue "Bioterrorism" being used to clue words for just the "Bio" or "Terrorism" parts?

I feel like "Ramshackle" shouldn't be allowed as you use it, but it's hard to draw a line of what is allowed. When in doubt, I think you should reach out to the other spymaster to see if they are okay with it.

For me, I think the key is having a "semantic link" from the clue to the target.

A semantically compound word will always have semantic links with its component words. I would be fine with "bioterrorism" being used to clue a purely biological word, although I think such a connection would be fairly weak. It is noteworthy that Swowl didn't try to include Mammoth in that clue.

In the previous game I used Leaflet=>Maple. The connection I intended there was purely semantic: "Leaflet"=>"Compound leaf"=>"Leaf"=>"Maple", which was fairly weak, but hopefully stronger than anything else on the board. Of course, I had noticed that "Leaflet" contained the word "Leaf", and it was likely my team would notice that also; my biggest concern then was that my team would reject Maple if they felt Leaflet=>Leaf was only a non-semantic link.

At the end of the day, any such rules/precedents will both help and hinder a team. Just interesting (and helpful!) to know how people think about this. Also happy to play it a different way if the group wants to.

I haven't looked yet at the board for this round, so as to not bias my thoughts any.

I agree that compound clues should be allowed if there's a semantic link. I might be more flexible in it being about the word origin (and not just meaning). So petroglyph I think is valid for oil, because both petroglyph and petroleum, come from petro-.

Ramshackle with comes from ransacked apparently, so has no etymological connection to ram would not be valid for lamb.

But I ado agree that the official arbiter of any clue is your opposing codemaster; if there's any doubt, just ask.

Buffalo and Mount I think for sure yeah?

Electric bull is a fairly famous country bar thing. pretty solid on that being 3.

super not sure on a 4th though.

Shot could be good.
Teacher could be a far off reference.
Spine?

Anything pop out?

Buffalo sounds good, mount probably ok.
I haven't heard of electric bull, but another thing is electric fences for fields with bulls in them.

Other ideas:
- Bull (vs bear) is a thing in stock markets. Not sure that points to anything here. Maaaybe COTTON? Is there a similar concept in CASINOs or something? No idea.
- Bulldog's have kind of SQUARE faces.
- In bullfighting do they tie anything to a POST or anything?

Buffalo -> Mount
Swowl, I say feel free to lock in electric if you're happy with it. After that I think probably pass?

I tend to take a very liberal approach to cluing so I am ok with these partial-word clues. They are just as likely to backfire as help I think.

ok thats cool.

I will let you lock it in to make sure you have not thought of something but I think I am good with passing here.

bullfighting (post/pole) - I have no idea. all I know about the sport is that they start in a fenced in cage and then they let them out and the dude holds on for as long as they can. Pole could be possible here because I want to say they have like a pole with a loop on the end of it they use to wrangle the thing or whatever at the end of the contest. post I have no clue about.

I think things like cotton or casino are off the table for now.

so yeah your call.

Ok, gimmes: Undertaker, Angel

Strong contender: Park

Other possibilities: Spine (bones in a cemetery), Candle (vigils for the dead), Shot (a way to die), Square (graves are rectangular, but close enough, and plots might be square)

Galz, feel free to lock in those first three and weigh in on any others

Not to get too Macabre, but a lot of death did famously happen in Germany in the Holocaust/WWII so I could see a connection there.

Undertaker -> Angel -> Park,

And I think I like Spine/Candle next. The others feel a little more stretched. If those first three are right, I think we should do one of Spine or Candle, then possibly consider passing, unless you’re really feeling the other.
