Solo Challenge 7 - Brewing up a Storm
« on: March 22, 2012, 10:32:28 am »

Round 7 - Brewing up a Storm

Challenge: End the game while having more than 51 Victory points
Restrictions: No Colony or Platinum
Kingdom Cards: Apothecary, Herbalist, Alchemist, Familiar, Transmute, Philosophers Stone, Golem, Apprentice, Workers Village, Vinyards

Timing: You have until Midnight Saturday for this one, as thats when I'll be back.

The Thoughts of Ozle X : well, we have had a bit of a prosperity go, now we are onto Alchemy, but with Workers Village in there instead of Uni and Scrying Pool (Saving them for a special one). The 51 Victory points is obviously 8 Provinces and 3 Estates, but I have included Vinyards and Workers Village to help in that respect to make it go quicker possibly. Possession obviously didnt make the cut (maybe a later challenge)

When you say more than 51, it means 52 and higher right?
Cause when you say 3 prov and 3 estates is enough, it hints at 51 being enough..

It means more than, it doesn't say that 8 provs and 3 estates are enough, just thy add up to 51, and you have to do better! (I have faith in you guys)

Or a Duchy?

Edit: Estate too. This isn't the challenge that requires you to have already bought them all.

Yes, but the point I was trying to make is that it's not just a straight province rush. They are thoughts as to why I put those card sets together rather than absolutes!

Did you seriously have to include both Alchemist and Herbalist and make us do an inordinate amount of clicking to return our Alchemists and Potion to the top of our deck? :(

At least it's not Scheme/Alchemist. Those are really annoying.

Cool. Well, I've given it a try, and I'm pretty damn positive I kinda suck at this. I think retrying the same strategy till I get better shuffle luck might shave a turn off, but I lack the persistence.

Fun challenge - wish I'd caught these threads earlier in the series!

So many entries and so little time! Obviously people like the challenge of this one! A lot of similar strategies, obviously Vinyards was a key component in most.

Also, I had a look through some of the players that didnt make it and they looked a trifle unlucky some of them!

Anyways, here are the results from the Jury:

In joint third, gaining a whole point, including a newbie entrant no less. In 17 turns we have...

For this one I opened potion/herbalist and just restarted until I was able to pull two alchemists on turns 3/4. Which is turns out to be pretty low percentage chance but it has wonderful benefits in speeding up the game.

Hehehe, I did the same but then I wasn't quite sure what to do after that; I ended up floundering with Alchemist and Golem and finished at a mediocre 18 turns.

It's interesting that both you and DG used this trick, but he went Apothecary first and you went Alchemist.  It's also interesting that you both used Transmute; I just assumed it would be too slow but shows what I know. :)

So, I'm gonna get pedantic here.  If this annoys you, please forgive me. :)

First question, are bonus points just honorable mention or do they actually go on the leaderboard?

Either way, do you have to finish in the top three places for the round to get bonus points or do you get them simply for buying all the Provinces (no matter how many turns)?  Because I notice that Stompy doesn't show up in the top 3 tiers you listed, but he got bonus points.  Just to keep the accounting sane, it seems like one should have to finish in a point-able tier to get bonus points.  Otherwise, somebody could get bonus points for a middling 18-turn Province entry (*cough* me *cough*).

EDIT: Missed that rabid was actually in the 16 turns tier.

Nope, anybody can get bonus points, no matter where they are, so your question is actually valid.

My apologies if I missed you out, will go back and have a look and award the points.

*EDIT* Yep, looks like i missed you out, had loads of entries for this one (think 20 plus) and I cant get the results to show on IE so have to look at them via iphone!
