My first reaction: "What? How'd I get signed up for this tournament"
...Then I remembered you're helping MMM with his tournament. Thanks!

Looking forward to this!

And fixed.

According to the sign-up point, the other missing name is Ignorentmen, but s/he also has no record.  Forum username is ignorentmen.  Coheed, let me know if you have trouble contacting him/her.

He pmed me and told me he's new to isotropic. We're scheduled to play on Friday so everything's all set! Thanks for helping organize this, kirian it's going to be a lot of fun!

I'm a little unsure of how to set up the games.. do we do "from 6 to 6 cards with tag set=base" for all 7 games?

That's correct.  As in MMM's thread, point counter highly encouraged.

michaeljb earns 10 points, mnavratil earns 4. Annotated videos to come. Thanks to mnavratil for the match, it was good fun and good competition, and I think I got lucky with a couple oddball moves (like opening Mint game 1, going Cellar/Adventurer/Tunnel in game 7). And thanks to MMM and Kirian for organizing and running this!

Game 1
michaeljb 45-31 mnavratil

Game 2
mnavratil 24-39 michaeljb

Game 3
mnavratil 20-44 michaeljb

Game 4
mnavratil 28-18 michaeljb

Game 5
michaeljb 52-41 mnavratil

Game 6
mnavratil 57-55 michaeljb

Game 7

Thanks for the games michaeljib.
I didn't think luck played too big of an overall part (okay, maybe some bad timing in my draws on that IGG/Mountebank affair in game 3), but otherwise I got the feeling that I was being outplayed rather than getting bad luck. I actually did like that Mint/Embargo opening on game 1 though. Nice bold way to start a series.

Brando Commando gets 8 tournie points, Nicki Menagerie get 6 tournie points.

NM was a gracious opponent and played very well; ultimately there were very few buys of his (hers?) that I disagreed with.

I missed the first two games, which Nicki Menagerie won, but here are the rest

BC wins game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-182508-f9fb701c.html

BC wins game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-183057-ce4ab691.html

NM wins game 6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-185032-ad471c0b.html

Jorbles takes the series winning 5 games (10 points) over PerdHapley's 2 (4 points).

Game 1 - PerdHapley 39 -  Jorbles 24
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-180422-5f0fadad.html

This one was basically a blowout. perdhapley opened Witch/Chapel to my Silver/Silver plus he had first turn advantage. I played on, but there probably wasn't much I could have done to turn it around.

Game 2 - Jorbles 61 - PerdHapley 45
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-181222-a9e934ca.html

An interesting BigMoneyish game in which Gardens came into play. The big difference between our two decks was that I had 2 Golds to his 1 Gold and he went a bit heavier into Border Villages (usually with a Festival) to get more cards faster. There was only Labs for draw though and neither of us bought them over Festivals. So my extra Gold paid off and we split the Provinces 5/3 in my favour. There was a fair amount of Duchy and Garden dancing going on in this game and tactically we both played pretty well.

Game 3 - Jorbles 39 - PerdHapley 32
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-181822-723f566a.html

We both make the mistake of opening Militia on a board with Library, so it ends up hurting us equally. Aside from that just a BMU mirror match. I broke PPR at the end because I figured my Merchant Ship would help me hit $8 two turns in a row (it did), Perd had some bad luck and hit $7 and had to settle for a Duchy.

Game 4 - Jorbles 43 - PerdHapley 33
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-182538-cc0e5bb1.html

A game where Vaults, Margraves and Militia rule the board. Not really sure what decided it we seemed to be playing similar games. Looking at the deck construction he had a few more actions than me so maybe he was suffering from terminal collision. The game goes long with a lot of Duchy dancing at the end. In the end perd realized he was drawing dead and Remodelled a Province into a Province to end it.

Game 5 - Jorbles 43 - PerdHapley 32
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-183300-706f971d.html

I open Moneylender anticipating his eventual picking up of an Ambassador so I can trash the Coppers he puts in my deck for some benefit. We both end up getting an Ambassador each. He opens with a Remake, which doesn't seem great with Ambassador as it reduces your own handsize and tends to get rid of cards you want to send to your opponent. Aside from that the other interesting interaction on the board that we both tried to take advantage of was the Library/Festival combo. I think the Moneylender had the greatest effect on the game and let me build my economy up faster than his.

Game 6 - PerdHapley 35 - Jorbles 22
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-184330-f04116fc.html

I was really sad to see this board and not have Gardens on it (Workshop/Thief/Crossroads/Ironworks/Bureaucrat were the cards costing $4 or less). Anyways it was a Torturer game, PerdHapley got his Torturer engine off the ground way quicker than me and he was smart enough to dip into a Festival allowing him multiple buys in the late game. He played this game perfectly, and I didn't have much of a chance.

Game 7 - Jorbles 36 - PerdHapley 18
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/22/game-20120322-185348-a61ec4b5.html
A three-piler where Villages, Curses and Platinums (!) ran out. I thought this was the most interesting game in the match. We both open Militia/Swindler, but he quickly picks up a Potion for Universities, I end up getting a good opportunity to buy a Mint to clear out 3 Coppers from my deck, which combined with Mine really accelerates the amount of Platinums I pick up, Swindlers also accelerate their disappearance. I've got a big enough lead (2 Colonies) by the time Platinums run out that I just buy up the last Villages and Curses winning the game.

Thanks to PerdHapley for some great matches! He is a great player.

Some quick comments on my games with Jorbles:

#1 - Nothing to see here. Witch/Chapel followed up with that almost perfect turn 3 draw was just dumb luck.

#2 - And so begins the stretch of games in which Jorbles is consistently one step ahead of me. I fell into a Gardens trap based off the allure of BV/Festival fattening the deck, and was stuck watching helplessly while Jorbles hit Province after Province. Whoops! Totally outplayed here.

#3 - I believe the last couple turns here put me on tilt a bit for the rest of the series. Jorbles timing with the PPR here, one turn following it and the next turn breaking it, was absolutely perfect.

#4 - I think I went overboard on Vaults and Margraves here, but only slightly - replace one (probably the second margrave) with a Gold and I think I might've pulled this one out. It certainly felt close... until it didn't. The Remodel business at the end was basically just a desperate attempt to draw perfect and pull out a double province turn.

#5 - I agree with the Moneylender assessment here, and think I just shouldn't have bothered with Ambassador at all. Nevertheless, I felt pretty confident in the early going. This game was a toss up at the end, as evidenced by the hand I would've drawn had I gotten one last turn. My plan here was good, I think, but I made some mistakes towards the end.

#6 - Not much to say here either. Step one: play a bunch of Torturers, step two: throw in a + buy, step 3: time Inn purchases to keep the torture chain going strong.

#7 - ...Please don't judge me for this one, guys. I played this absolutely terribly, in stark  contrast to Jorbles, whose plan made sense and was well executed. I honestly don't know what I was thinking even considering University here, and as the game went on and I became more disgusted with the non-strategy I'd picked, my buys might as well have been random.

Jorbles played excellently throughout this set, and his 5-2 victory is even more impressive when you consider how totally screwed he was by pure shuffle luck in game one. Thanks for being such a friendly opponent, Jorbles!

Kirian you should edit the part of your first post where it states to use AT LEAST 6 cards from the original set.. This is what confused me because in MMM's rules thread it states: "2) Exactly 6 cards, chosen at random, in each game must belong to the current week's expansion, using the excellent option to filter cards in Isotropic."

Just had a nice series against Yuma. Thanks for the games!

Overall score: Mergus wins 4, Yuma wins 2, Ties 1

Here are the logs
Mergus 46 - Yuma 36
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-130657-d4a88aaa.html

Mountebank game with Harems and Alchemist. Didn't feel much like base Dominion yet.

Yuma 24 - Mergus 24 (TIE)
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-131246-9d3c00df.html

His Watchtower/Chapel works just as well as my Silver/Chapel.

Yuma 19 - Mergus 25
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-131933-8fa07eac.html

Workshop-Gardens game, Yuma opens Nomad Village leading to a 5-3 Garden split in my favor.

Yuma 26 - Mergus 31
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-132737-e235910a.html

We both figure that Hamlet can be a nice addition to Jack of all Trades, accidentally through my 5-2 split.

Yuma 42 - Mergus 33
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-133546-a5c5e5fc.html

Witch game with split curses and split labs. He managed to pick up one more Gold which helps him get 5 Provinces.

Mergus 34 - yuma 19
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-134900-23072863.html

The most fun game of the series from my point of view. Chapel and Witch and he gets 5-2. I try Chapel/Worker's Village to get Peddlers which turns out very well.

Yuma 36 - Mergus 24
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-140403-0239efff.html

I'm still too excited about the Peddlers from last game. Also thinking they'd be a good counter to Saboteur. He just goes double Councilroom and big money, beating my mass Spies.

Finished my games vs Ignorantmen

Final result: Coheed wins 2, Ignorantmen wins 4, 1 tie

Game 1: Coheed(54) Ignorantmen(55)http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-140510-46e39ded.html

Yucky board.. I felt margrave BM would be dominant so I picked up an early horse traders. He chose to steal some early duchies which I let him do and I decided I'll get golds and eventually block out a few duchies to stop him from getting super powered dukes. I wasn't really able to get enough provinces and I chose to try to fight him on the dukes even though I lost the duchy split 5/3. VERY close coming towards the end and I chose to end the game on a 3 pile thinking I'd have enough cards to boost my gardens but I was ONE CARD SHORT!

Game 2: Coheed (33) Ignorantmen(33) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-141126-526a5919.html

Another yucky board with no engine possibilities.. From the start I knew it was going to be a BM game with a few remodels for extra VPs later on. With 2 provinces left and me losing by 6 I took a risk and broke PPR in hopes he wouldn't be able to buyout the last province. He chose to end the game in a tie by remodeling his province.

Game 3: Coheed (13) Ignorantmen(17) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-141348-7a258463.html

Gardens workshop.. enough said. I HATE Gardens games because they always come down to luck.
He won the split 5/3 and it was basically over from there.

Game 4: Coheed(24) Ignorantmen(34) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-141911-fa17f58c.html

Pretty tricky board.. Lots of different strat possibilities. We both decided to just ignore the familiar because of the masquerade on the board. He opened Masq/silver and I decided to go chapel/silver. I don't really know what I was thinking with my explorer pickup but I think it was AWFUL. Chapel proved to be too slow for this board as he built up a deck with superior buying power compared to mine.

Game 5: Coheed (27) Ignorantmen(35) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-142434-02d4480b.html

Once again, no engine possibilities. I noticed heavy cursers with witch and IGG so I decided not to get a militia cause I feel its discarding ability is weakened since we both will easily be able to shake off the attack with our curses. I felt he got a pretty lucky draw since he was able to buy Witch and IGG on turn 3/4. It came down to who could buy more provinces in the end which was obviously him since I lost the curse split 7/3.

Game 6: Coheed(36) Ignorantmen(23) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-143303-f54dcaef.html

FINALLY!! an engine board! I immediately saw my favorite card, tactician and some nice +$ actions to pair with it so I went for a double tactician engine. I couldn't really hit it that consistently because there was a lack of draw. He built an early VP lead and I was starting to get scared that the game would become out of reach and I still wasn't finished building my engine. I started getting some menageries fast to try and get some drawing power in my deck and from then on I was able to buy province after province to get my first victory in the match.

Game 7: Coheed(31) Ignorantmen(28) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-143906-d3478cb3.html

Another juicy double tactician board. I built my deck wrong early and had some trouble getting 5$ early on. I got cellar REALLY late too which was a big mistake because it's a great card in a tactician engine. I find it a little funny that the only 2 games I win are with my favorite card, I guess it pulled through for me.

Ignorantmen is a very strong player and I think he's going to fit in nicely with the community. I hope to play him again sometime soon!

My thoughts on the games against Mergus:

Game one: I felt the biggest differences in this game were Mergus' getting 3 Alchemists to my one and him getting his second Mountebank earlier, turn five compared to turn 9. Still the curses ended up being split. I also bought two thieves hoping to 1. prevent him buying Harems and 2. if he did to steal them. That ended up not working.

Game two: I forgot that Chapel was my goal when I bought Watchtower. But I decided to try something new and get Chapel anyways. The two worked surprisingly well together. Mostly cause I didn't draw them together until turn 12. That was probably a bit lucky. My biggest mistake in this game was buying Militia that I never used instead of an estate in the late game (turn 10). That could have been a difference maker.

Game three: Workshop beat Nomad Camp at its best (I was able to open N.C., Festival) I can only wonder how it would have faired if I hadn't gotten lucky there.

Game four: I couldn't see anything else to do but standard double jack even though it was boring. If it had been a non tournament game I would have tried something more interesting but I was trying to win! That was a mistake as Hamlet/Council Room addition turned out to be a good addition. Interesting thing about Council Room is that it effectively nullfies the opponent's Jack draw... Hadn't thought of that before.

Game five: I finally win one. I think my experience playing against computer's on the Iphone app finally paid off as I basically play a Base game as the other cards didn't do much for me.

Game six: I went through a couple of emotional phases in this game. First glee at getting a 5/2 split with Witch and Chapel, second frustration that my witch and chapel kept coming up with each other, 3. fear as I saw Mergus going for Peddlers very successfully and 4. awe as I saw him demolish me with great strategy. Phew that was a rough game for me.

Game seven: We had talked early about how Mergus totally hates Saboteur and I opted to not buy one mostly because he had been such a nice opponent thus far. Turns out 2 Council Rooms were pretty good in that situation especially with all his spies. I was able to play one just about every turn.

Mergus is a quality opponent, play against him if you get a chance.

Result: Axxle 4 - tlloyd 3
So, Axxle earns 8 points, tlloyd earns 6

Game 1: Axxle 32 - tlloyd 30 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-194324-4bed7073.html
A chapel game, I go for Fool's Gold and tlloyd goes for big money with lab support, taking some of my FG's when he can.  I take this one although it's close.

Game 2: Axxle 38 - tlloyd 31 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-195025-323782d2.html
I go BM+Council Room with one Hoard, tlloyd pile drives the city pile but can't quite get a mega turn in time.

Game 3: Axxle ? - tlloyd ? lost log
I remember opening jester/cellar, and there being hunting parties.  tlloyd wins this one

Game 4: Axxle 27 - tlloyd 37 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-200054-9984d5d2.html
I get a 5-2 split, but open vault with militia on the board.  things don't go so well from there.

Game 5: Axxle 33 - tlloyd 35 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-200752-4badfad0.html
A game with minion and witch without good trashers.  I make a fatal mistake by needlessly trashing my opening mining village and tlloyd gets a majority of the minions. I also made the mistake of getting duchies instead of silk roads when we started doing rushes of piles.

Game 6: Axxle 46 - tlloyd 24 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-201619-7e585732.html
tlloyd tries to do something funny with border village/council room/treasure map but that doesnt really get off the ground till the end.  His council rooms let me line up my remodel and border villages a few times.

Game 7: Axxle 43 - tlloyd 42 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/23/game-20120323-202457-cad83d2f.html
Again I have 5/2.  I open tactician and he makes it a priority to get one too.  I think my scheme was very important here since it let me replay my tac immediately a few times.  tlloyd made the mistake of ignoring the estates twice too many times and let me squeak by at the end.

I had a good amount of luck these games.  I open 5/2 a lot and tlloyd did just once.  I think I needed the luck a lot more than he did knowing his skill and seeing it in action again.  Thanks for the games tlloyd, and good luck in the tournament!

These were all great games, and I don't think luck had much to do with the outcome. In games 1-6 the winner just had a better strategy. Game 7 was a toss-up at the end, and I'm not sure buying those estates would have given me better odds of winning, even though that seems to have made the difference in hindsight. I hope all the other rounds are as competitive as this one was -- though it'd be nice to win game 7!
