Action and Pick Up Limit?

Hi Everyone,

Very new to the game and have only played a few games so far.  I was playing with a few friends when we had one fellow get caught in an endless cycle using Smithy, Market and Village to get endless actions and card pick ups.  Eventually he ended up with a bunch of copper from the Market to buy all the Provences and win the game.

We went through the rules again and did not see any limit on how many actions or cards could be picked up during one turn and was hoping there is something we are missing.

We were playing the First Game recommended supplies in the rule book.

Thanks.

How did he get enough money to buy all the provinces in a turn with a maximum of ten markets?

You I remember that, after the first game I played we were dicussing a variante that you only may play one Village per turn, because hey, how insanely powerfull is that card...

But you don't really need that.  If you play a little more, you will come back here in a few days and tell us how insanely powerfull it is too just buy money and Provinces, and that all the fun is out of the game because all this funny action-chaining is gone.

Playing all these actions is very powerfull. But buying them will take some time, time you could invest in Gold, or Provinces. The game can be shorter than you might think now, or as it is in the first games. So the first games tend to allow very long chains, because spending your time buying actions is not that a big deal. There is plenty of time while everybody tries out all these shiny actions. When all of you figure out how to get to the Provinces faster, there is not the time anymore to mass all these actions, and these long chains are not as easy to pull of anymore.  That doesn't mean they are not possible anymore, and when it happens it's the most of the fun.

Anyway, welcome to Dominon and the forums, I hope you enyoy.

Looks like you played the game wrong. There's no endless in Dominion because when you play a card it stays on the table and only gets discarded at the end of your turn (this differs from Magic for instance where you play a sorcery/instant and it gets discarded immediately).

I think I know what your doing.

When you play the Markets, they do not go into the discard pile just yet, they go 'into play'.

So therefore you cannot draw them again this turn.

Therefore you cannot play the same market twice in the same turn.

Then at the endof the turn, everything 'in play' gets moved to your discard.

Also, just in case your doing that as well. Your buying phase comes AFTER your action phase. Once you start laying down treasure cards, no more actions can be used

Also, Welcome aboard!

Or like that. Actually wondered a bit how you get money for 8/12 Provinces just with Markets...
Another thing, it sounds a bit like another standard mistake:

+1coin does not mean you gain 1 Copper to your hand (or wherever), but you get one "virtual" coin to spend in your buyphase. No cards are gained, just remember that you may spend 1 coin during your buyphase if you played a card with this instruction.

And as you have the rulebook, I suggest that you read it more closely.
I find the rules very well done and every card is talked about in detail.

Some excerpts:
Quote
Players can play their
action cards left to right in their
play areas. In this way, they can
easily keep track of what and
how many extra things they
may do. The player will discard
these cards in the clean-up
phase (see below), and should
not be discarded prior to this.

Quote
"+(X) " – the player has X number of additional coins to spend in the Buy
phase. The player does not take additional Treasure cards for these coins.

Thanks all for the welcome and quick responses.  You guys are truly awesome.

Our mistake was allowing the player to put the action cards already played and completed into the discard pile and continue to reshuffle it back into the deck if they required a draw (pick up in our terms).  Hence the endless loop this player was doing.

Heck we played the interaction set of recommended cards and he did a similar combo, although not as bad, with the Festival and Moat cards.

Thanks for clearing this up!
