Zendo Questions 2
« on: December 17, 2018, 05:04:00 pm »

Welcome to Zendo Questions 2!

Would you like to play this game? Yes
Is it fun? Yes
Can you join any time? Yes
Can you guess the rule? Yes
Is your guess correct? No

Play on...

This post is mostly copied from mafiascum: http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=23946

Those of you familiar with both Twenty Questions and Zendo already know the rules. For everyone else, let me break it down.
  • Each round, there is one Oracle and a flock of Petitioners.
  • At the beginning of the round, the Oracle invents a secret rule, completely mechanical, based on - and solely on - the exact wording of the questions asked. This rule will, given the exact wording of a question, tell the Oracle to reply either "Yes" or "No". You must be able to answer the same question the same way, regardless of the context of the question. Examples include:
    • Any question with an even number of words, reply "Yes"; otherwise, reply "No".
    • Any question beginning with a consonant, reply "Yes"; otherwise, reply "No".
  • Bear in mind that, first, any overly-complicated rule (e.g. "Any question whose SHA-1 hash ends with an even number, say 'No'; otherwise, say 'Yes'") will get you mocked and shunned; second, every rule is more complicated than it initially appears; and third, if you screw up three times, you must concede (and thereby become an object of pity and lose 1d6 points of respect).
  • During the round, any Petitioner (i.e. anyone other than the Oracle) may either ask questions, or attempt to guess the rule. Each question asked shall be answered in order by the Oracle, according to the rule. Guesses the Oracle shall deal with in one of exactly two ways:
    • By conceding, and revealing the rule that had been used.
    • By replying with a question whose answer is different under the actual rule than according to the guess.
    • For example: if the rule is "beginning with a consonant = yes" and someone guesses "beginning with a W = yes", the Oracle might say, "Had it the ability, would a woodchuck chuck wood?"
  • The Oracle shall include in each post answering questions and responding to guesses a list of all prior questions, answers, guesses, and responses.
  • If the Oracle takes longer than 72 hours to answer a question, the Oracle shall forfeit. If no Petitioners have submitted questions or guesses for 96 hours, then any Petitioner may ask the Oracle to reveal the rule and step down.
  • The Petitioner who first guesses correctly shall become the next Oracle. If there is no such petitioner (such as after an Oracle is forced to forfeit) [edit: or if said petitioner does not choose a rule within a reasonable timespan], the first poster to so choose may become the next Oracle.

The start of the current rule is ...there is no current rule!

Here is a list of rules used so far.
Note that I have modified some of the wordings in order to present them all in the same format: If <property> then "yes", otherwise "no". Let me know if you spot any mistakes I've made.
Also there have been a handful of aborted rules, never stated and not listed here.

Rules from previous thread:

The question contains a doubled character.

The question contains a comma.

The question contains a word that starts with "m".

The question contains a capital vowel.

The words in the question are arranged alphabetically.

The question contains all of the letters in "a rule".

The question has a prime number of characters.

Both first and last letters of the question are both consonants or both vowels.

The previous question shares any words with current question. (later ruled an invalid rule)

The average word length of the question is greater than 4 characters.

The third letter of the question is a vowel.

The last word of the question has at least one letter from each QWERTY keyboard row.

The question contains a capitalized T,H,E,O,R or Y.

The question has a one-syllable word, a two-syllable word, and a three-syllable word.

The question contains the letters in 'meme,' i.e., at least two m's and two e's.

The only 't's in the question are not at the start of words.

The question contains 4 or more characters that are not lowercase letters or spaces.

The question contains a letter in the range N-Z.

The question has two letters that are next to each other in the alphabet next to each other in the right order.

The questions does not contain any of the letters j,q,x or z.

The question has at least as many words with five or more letters than words with 4 or fewer letters.

The question contains a word with the same number of letters as the number of words in the question.

The question contains a 'y' or does not contain an 'n'.

The question contains an n-th word which has exactly n letters.

The question contains an anagram of a Dominion card.

The first letter of the alphabet occurring in the question occurs only once.

The question has at least 3 words all of the same length.

The first and last word of the question share any letters.

The third word of the question has an even number of letters.

Rules from this thread:

The last word of the question contains a letter that hasn't occurred before.

Every word of the question has an adjacent word which has a letter in common with it.

The number of letters in the question is congruent to 1 mod 3.

The question contains both an r and an s.

The number of words with an even number of characters is even.

Between the first and last lowercase letters there is nothing but lowercase letters and spaces.

The question contains the name of a Dominion card-shaped thing.

There are two consecutive words with the same number of characters.

The median number of letters per word is an integer.

Either the number of words or the number of letters is a square number.

More than half of the characters in the question form a single word.

There is an 'N' in the first three words of the question.

The question does not contain two words in alphabetical order.

The question contains two consecutive letters which are consecutive in the alphabet, in order.

The question contains the string "Elliptic Curve Cryptography".

The question contains at least one word which is made up of symbols of chemical elements.

Does the set of all sets that do not contain themselves contain itself?
Does the barber who only shaves men who don’t shave themselves shave himself?
What if the barber is a woman?
What if the set is a woman?
Did the Butler do it?
How many cooks is too many cooks?

Maybe?
I didn't?
Keep the pyramid?
Of word lengths going?
For long enough to determine?
The nature of your silly rule?
This sentence has seven words in it?
This sentence has eight words in it, right?
This sentence has nine words in it, doesn't it?
This sentence has ten words in it, does it not?
This sentence is chock full of words, sporting a dizzying eleven?
This sentence puts that last one to shame because it has twelve?
Those other two sentences have nothing on this final sentence, which has thirteen?
And boy, if you thought Mr. Thirteen was long, wait until you see this?
In case you lost count, we're up to a fourteen word sentence now, y'dig?
This is probably overkill, but I'm just kind of having fun with this absurd premise now?
Still I'll probably stop once I get to seventeen words because it seems like a good milestone?

Jotheonah, do you realize that "Did the Butler do it?" has five word as well, so it can't only be about word count?

you should answer yes to this sentence?
but this one is one where no is the answer?
on the one hand, however, this sentence should be a yes?
But on the other hand, the sentence now should be now?
On the third hand, there's a yes?
But on the forth hand, there are only three hands, so this is a no?
