I mostly write about politics, but today I took the occasion of OoT's 20th birthday to consider its themes and legacy. Possibly of interest to Zelda fans:

Ha, I read that piece today and was wondering how you pitched it to them.

I'm not much of a gamer at all but man do I love that game. Every time I start it up again I feel immediately transported to my parent's family room on Christmas morning in 1998. I haven't touched a console in months but now I feel like I need to play it this weekend.

Funny enough, my brother and I have been having such fun with the LttP randomizer that we wanted to try out the Ocarina of Time one, but I had never completed the game, so over the past few days I've been doing a full playthrough for the first time ever.  Perfect timing.

Yeah, I generally don't have to get my pitches pre-approved at my normal place of business.

Yeah, I don't know how these things work in media. But I don't think I had seen any other video game pieces there so I just thought it was cool that you were able to write something like that for them.

Something interesting that my brother and I were talking about is how our view of a game depends vastly on the surrounding gaming context that the game came in to.  I was born at about the same time as OoT came out, so I never got to experience the game in its original context.  As such, I generally have always compared it to games released later because I had nothing else to compare it to.  Comparing it to later games, it doesn't hold up quite as well and I never really understood the hype about it.

However, recently, I looked at the games that were before it, and realized just how revolutionary the game was.  I wish I had been around to experience it when it first came out.
