Diplomacy 6 (Game ended)
« on: September 04, 2018, 09:51:47 am »

Current map:

Hello all,

I had quite some fun playing forum Diplomacy some time ago here and thought I would maybe host a game of that. So for now I want to see if there is enough interest for that.

Signup list:
1. LaLight - Russia
2. Jack Rudd - Germany
3. Jimmmmm - England
4. ghostofmars - Turkey
5. Glooble - France
6. UmbrageofSnow - Austria
7. A Drowned Kernel - Italy

Diplomacy can accommodate up to 7 players, and I would like to get the full numbers in if at all possible. I am vaguely planning to run the 1900 variant, as that is what we did last time and I think it enhances interaction. Best read ghost's original post:

Shameless quote from BGG:
The balance of power between the seven Great Nations of Europe teeters precariously at the dawn of the 20th Century. Take control of Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, or Turkey and lead your chosen nation to victory. You will have to balance your expansion with carefully crafted alliances, knowing when to seize the advantage through a perfectly-timed stab while avoiding being stabbed yourself.

To push players out of there comfort zone with the known stalemate lines and openings, we will play the 1900 variant designed to be more interactive than the original game. There are only small rule changes compared to the original version, so I think it is possible for new players to jump in.

Resources for the variant:
a high resolution map
Changes to the original version and their motivations
Gamers' Guide to this variant (extensive!) Discusses the motivation for the changes in a bit more detail and some ideas about the strategy in this variant.

Resources for the original game:
Diplomacy Official Rulebook
Quick Teaching Guide
jDip, a great tool for testing move ideas and making sure they're legal. You can download the variant map for jDip here

Feel free to use this thread for preliminary discussion. Possible topics:

- what is Diplomacy?
- how good or bad is the 1900 variant?
- should there be deadlines, and how long should they be?
etc.

I've found a yet awesome tutorial:

It is simple (as of part 4) and quite interesting. Also the guy's accent is absolutely magical

The links featured in ghost's original post (with rules for the variant) don't seem to work any longer, so here's another link instead:

Sorry, Diplomacy's just worn me down too much after my first few games. But it is great fun for at least the first time, and I encourage anybody who's never played to give it a go.

As much as I love the game, Mafia is about the extent of the commitment that I can make at this time - but I hope to see this get filled and played out.

I'm hypothetically interested, I love Diplomacy, but I also don't quite want to commit yet.

Also might be able to drag Uncleeurope into this if I get myself together enough to want to play.

Okay, we heard from everyone. I'll get this set up.

Any opinions on deadlines? Last game had 4-5 days roughly. I think I'll make the first one somewhat longer so people can get to know each other.

Also, if anyone wants to spectate, please let me know and I can set that up.

I second that, I've got a lot to do today/tomorrow and then kind of the next day because of catching up on things I'm putting off for other things.

And I feel like the very start of the first year is one of the most important times in Diplomacy

I think 4 days is fine, are you planning on shortened winters?  Also, we should make sure all plyers are available on day1, delaying if necessary.  I wouldn't  want somebody showing up to the negotiation table late right out of the gates.  Kinda punishing, that

Neat. I'll prepare everything this evening (European time) and have QTs sent out then. Will start with giving each player pair a QT as well as each player an individual QT to place orders in. Additional QTs for larger groups will be provided upon request.

You can give me my sub/spectator QT; I'll post my thoughts to myself.  Then I'm prepped in case I have to sub, but nobody's giving me outside help, or knowledge of any other player-player interactions.

Re: Diplomacy 6 (Spring 1900 - Deadline Feb 13, 3 pm)
« Reply #39 on: February 05, 2019, 04:06:31 pm »

And with this, we start. I've decided on 8 days for the first deadline, others will have 4 day deadlines, with shorter 24 deadlines for winter moves. Deadline extensions can be requested.

As a reminder, we are playing the 1900 variant that comes with the following changes:

Code: [Select]
1. The rules of "standard" Diplomacy are valid, unless specifically replaced or amended by these rules.

2. If a Great Power gains control of 18 SCs, the game ends and the player controlling that Great Power is
declared the winner. With 39 SCs, though, it is now possible for two Great Powers to get 18 SCs on the same
game-turn. Should this happen, the player representing the Great Power with the most SCs is the winner. If
the two Great Powers each control the same number of SCs, play continues until one Great Power controls
at least 18 SCs and that Great Power controls more SCs than any other Great Power.

3. Iceland, Ireland, and Switzerland are now passable.

4. Movement between Clyde and Ireland is allowed. This is true even if an enemy fleet is in the North Atlantic
Ocean. A convoy is not required to move an army back and forth between Clyde and Ireland.

5. Army movement is allowed between Gibraltar and Morocco. No convoy is required in this case. Gibraltar is
considered a sea space for convoy purposes.

6. None of the Great Powers can build new units in Africa even if they control a space in Africa at game-start.

7. The Suez Canal Rules go like this:
7.1 A fleet may move back and forth between Egypt and Hejaz.
7.2 Movement between Egypt or Hejaz and the Mid-Atlantic Ocean is allowed. A unit that moves in this manner
does so at half strength. This means that a unit adjacent to Egypt or Hejaz succeeds in moving there if
opposed only by a fleet moving from the Mid-Atlantic Ocean and a fleet adjacent to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean
succeeds in moving there if opposed only by a fleet moving from Egypt or Hejaz.
7.3 A fleet in Egypt or Hejaz cannot support a unit holding in or moving to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean. This is true
even though the fleet in Egypt or Hejaz can itself move to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean. Likewise, a fleet in the Mid-
Atlantic Ocean cannot support a unit holding in or moving to Egypt or Hejaz.
7.4 A fleet moving from Egypt or Hejaz to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean does not cut support being provided by a
fleet already in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean unless the attack results in F Mid-Atlantic Ocean being dislodged. The
opposite is equally true. A fleet moving from the Mid-Atlantic Ocean to Egypt or Hejaz does not cut support
being provided by a unit already in Egypt or Hejaz unless the attack results in the unit being dislodged.
7.5 F Mid-Atlantic Ocean can convoy an army from or to Egypt or Hejaz. An army convoyed from Egypt or
Hejaz attacks its destination space at full strength. An army convoyed to Egypt or Hejaz attacks at half strength.
7.6 If two units may retreat only to Egypt or Hejaz, or the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, and one of them must travel
around the southern tip of Africa, the unit that does not travel around southern Africa may retreat while the
other unit is disbanded. Similarly, if two units are retreating to Egypt or Hejaz, or the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, and
one of them must travel around the southern tip of Africa, the unit that does not travel around southern Africa
may retreat while the other unit is disbanded.

8. Russian Emergency Measures: Whenever Russia possesses at least one, BUT NOT ALL FOUR, of its original
home supply centers, it is entitled to maintain one extra unit on the map (i.e., one more than the number of
supply centers it currently controls). Additionally, while Russia is in this condition, the Russian player may use
Siberia as a build site during the adjustment phase, if Siberia is unoccupied. Should Russia fail to possess at
least one home supply center OR should it regain possession of all four of its home supply centers, the ability
to maintain an extra unit is lost and any excess units must be disbanded during the subsequent adjustment
phase. Further, Siberia reverts too its normal status (i.e., it is no longer a build site). Note that Siberia, while
it may become a build site, NEVER attains supply center status.

I noticed that the Steamroller rule is not the same as the Russian Emergency Measures (REM) rule. Is this change intentional?
8. Steamroller Rule: Russia is allowed to have one additional unit while it controls at least one of the four Russian home SCs. If other Powers control of all four Russian home SCs, with control being determined after the Fall retreats, the ability to maintain an additional unit is lost and Russia may only field a number of units equal to the number of SCs it actually controls. Should Russia regain a home SC, it would again be eligible to field an additional unit, though this unit would need to be built in an open home SC as per normal build rules. Note that the additional unit does not appear at the start of the game, as there is no vacant home SC to put it in.
Quote
The REM Rule reflects the fact that Russia's greatest military assets at the dawn of the 20th century were its seemingly endless supply of manpower and its vast resources. Unfortunately, terrible mismanagement and a weak economy prevented Russia from successfully exploiting these assets. If Russia were to suffer a severe setback, such as is implied by the loss of a home supply center, it seems reasonable to assume the Russian government would be shocked into taking drastic measures to overcome the situation, to include stripping the many garrisons stationed throughout the Asiatic portions of the Empire and better managing its limited industrial capability. To this effect:

•Whenever Russia possesses at least one, BUT NOT ALL FOUR, of its original home supply centers, it is entitled to maintain one extra unit on the map (i.e., one more than the number of supply centers it currently controls). Additionally, while Russia is in this condition, the Russian player may use Siberia as a build site during the adjustment phase, if Siberia is unoccupied. I was not intended to be changed, but it seems that the jDip implementation of 1900 comes with the Steamroller rule. I will go check this when I am at my home computer, it may take a day or so.

So, I checked and I only have the jDip variant that includes the Steamroller rule. I don't really want to figure out how to write my own variant, so I'd just do that. If somebody (ghost?) knows where I could get resources to run the REM rules, I would not be opposed to changing that if that's what everyone prefers.

I manually edited the map for the REM. Essentially it amounts to two things: do not build all the units if you have all 4 centers and using the edit function to put a unit on Siberia.

One other thing: I think jDip also doesn't enforce some of the rules regarding the movement around Africa in particular the half strength.

Okay, I should have thought of just doing it manually... thanks. I'll also take care that the Suez Canal rules work as intended. We will play this game with REM rules rather than the Steamroller rule.

Sorry but when I agreed to join I hadn't done my homework before and only then realised that participating in a meaningful way means assuming yet one more account on some WWW service supplier. I have at the moment 41 passwords to handle, so currently I am less than willing to widen my range of internet presences for what is essentially a leisure activity.

It means that I'd be glad for someone else to take my spot.

Diplomacy 6 (Spring 1903 moves)
« Reply #72 on: March 15, 2019, 08:19:56 am »

Spring 1903 moves:

Orders:
Code: [Select]
Austria
Tyr S Mun-Swi
Boh-Mun
Sil S Boh-Mun
Bud -Boh
Rum - Bud

England
F Nwy - Nth
F Ska S F Nwy - Nth
F Yor S F Nwy - Nth
F Mid - Eng
F Cyr - Trp
F Egy - Cyr

France
F Por -> Spa SC
A Par -> Bur
A Mar S A Par -> Bur
A Bre -> Pic
A Sou S F Cyr -> Trp
F Pie -> Rom
A Swi Hold

Germany
F North Sea C A Netherlands -> Edinburgh
A Netherlands -> North Sea -> Edinburgh
A Belgium S A Alsace -> Burgundy
A Alsace -> Burgundy
A Cologne -> Kiel
F Denmark S F North Sea

Italy
A Mun -> Swi
A Mil S A Mun -> Swi
F GLy -> Rom
F Ion -> TyS
A Trp -> Tun

Russia
A Pru - Lvo
F BAR - Nwy
A Fin S F BAR - Nwy
F Swe S F BAR - Nwy
A Ukr-Mos

Turkey
F Sev - Bla
A Con - Kon
F Dam - Pal
F Eas S F Dam - Pal
F Aeg - Ion
A Gre hold

I will do the map update in a couple of hours. We need 1 retreat order from Germany (Nth). The French A Swi is destroyed as there are no possible regions to retreat to.

The German order A Cologne - Kiel is invalid; there is no unit in Cologne. A Kiel has no order and gets a default hold.

Also, I will shorten deadline a little so that it is now 4 days. That seems to be enough time to discussion based on the experience so far.

Thus, the new deadline is

How will you deal with F Por - Spa SC? The intention is clear, but technically there is only Spa (wc) and Spa (ec) on this map.

Deadline has passed. I have yet to receive orders. I will extend until 1 pm (forum time - the [time] tag unfortunately does not work properly with the different dates for switching daylight savings time) and hope that this is enough.

I think it is better to have this discussion now.

Activity for this game has slowed down immensely in the QTs. Every deadline needs to be extended. I have to wonder whether you guys are still motivated to keep on playing. Because if we are all just going through the motions, then I would rather bring this to an end now.

While I'm still engaged in the game, I do sense a loss of interest in most of the other players, and we're already having trouble finding one replacement. I won't shed any tears if we call it quits.

I would still like to continue, but I agree that the current situation is not ideal.

Personally, I would prefer shorter deadlines to keep a game year within a week, but what the right solution is, depends on the reason why deadlines are being missed.

My attitude matches more or less Austria's, especially since I am the one who asked for being replaced. Picked up a game the first time after decades but realized fast that I am not getting too much out of it. But I'd happily continue as long as no one is ready to pick up the baton.

I'm conflicted.  I get really excited for Diplomacy, but I have a bad internal clock and am not good at handling deadlines.  I think quicker deadlines could work, but they could also overwhelm me.

I'm not really invested at all. I just didn't want to replace out because I didn't want someone having to come take over a crappy position.

Given the replies, I don't think it is feasible to continue if a majority of players isn't really invested.

Here is my main quicktopic from which you can access all the other ones
https://quicktopic.com/52/H/VQDw9UPc9XE

Turkey, how close were you to stabbing me?
Depends about which time in the game you talk. In 1902 I tried to get Britain to fight you, but after they moved another fleet to Egy my plan A was to work with you. I might have still attacked you if Austria had asked for it, but since then I was not actively planning an attack. I don't know what I would have done in the endgame.
To be fair, France and Britain did also not really try to offer anything, so I don't know how it would have played out if they did.

A question for Germany, Britain, France, and Italy: at which point did you realize that Austria, Russia, and I were allies?
