Firstly, hi :) I have lurked on this forum for a little while, and although I probably can't provide much insight on a lot of the topics here, hopefully my question will lead to some fun discussion.

If you were stuck on a desert island with only a single Dominion box (or less hypothetically, if you were fed up of bringing half a dozen boxes to your friend's house all the time), which cards would you choose to go into it? Obviously the base treasures/VPs, but what else? The emphasis here is on entertainment, depth (lots of different strategies) and most importantly, replayability. There's ~28 Kingdom slots in the base Dominion box, so a full list would take a while to do - suggestions for even a few good cards would be appreciated!

Let's see, some cards from each set that I like or think are important...

Base: Militia, Moneylender, Chapel, Smithy, Throne Room, Witch
Intrigue: Masquerade, Torturer, Nobles
Seaside: Fishing Village, Wharf, Ambassador, Salvager
Prosperity: Hoard, Bishop, Monument, Grand Market, Watchtower
Alchemy: Apprentice, Scrying Pool, Alchemist
Cornucopia: Menagerie, Hunting Party
Hinterlands: Stables, Haggler, Border Village, Silk Road, Crossroads

Man, any set from this would just be insane.

I'd probably skip any potion-cost cards. Skipping Potion lets you take an extra card.

On the other hand, I would include Colonies/Platinum.

Hmmm...that's a tough question.  Are there any other people on the island?

Ideally, I'd want a range of costs, a few cursers, and some trashing.  The challenge though is, as Captain_Frisk pointed out, how do you pick 28 cards and not end up with a set full of power cards that warp the game.

I'd be tempted to just bring Intrigue, and call it a day.  It's pretty simple and doesn't have the huge Big Money bias that the Base Set has.  Plus, Scout sucks less in that context!

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!

Taco, yes, there would hopefully be others on the island :P And it's a good point about the power cards. What I'm after is a setup that I can quickly have to hand, and will near-guarantee a fun game. I figured this could be done by having a bunch of equally powerful cards, but perhaps that has its problems too. Robz, I will look over your suggestions, thanks! Haven't got all the expansions yet but I'm resigned to the fact I'll buy them all eventually :P

I'd remove the plastic inlay and fill the entire box with Feasts.

(haha)

Fun fact: I actually do this already! I only have Base+Seaside+Hinterlands, but I've used my one-box-for-going-places a few times, with a set I devised over a worrying small period of time. It has 30 cards (3 sets go in the curse slot - so I deliberately avoided curses to get those extra 3 sets in (and as an aside, you can only really fit 27 sets if you want curses :P)), and I intentionally chose more simpler cards than complex ones, so I could use it with new players (similarly, I avoided any really nasty attacks, to make games a bit quicker in general and because I personally think 4 player games with too many attacks tend to be dull).

So here's what I have:

$2:
Cellar
Chapel
Crossroads
Moat

$3:
Chancellor
Oasis
Oracle
Scheme
Warehoue
Woodcutter
Tunnel

$4:
Cutpurse
Moneylender
Noble Brigand
Remodel
Salvager
Smithy
Spy
Throne Room
Silk Road

$5:
Bazzar
Cartographer
Embassy
Festival
Laboratory
Library
Margrave
Market
Stables
Treasury

No $6+.

The set used to have Council Room instead of Crossroads, and Navigator instead of Noble Brigand. Back then the set had too much big draw (CR, Margrave, Smithy, Embassy) and too much sifting (Navigator, Warehouse, Embassy, Cellar, Cartographer) which was a bit crazy, and it had no cheap +actions (only Bazzar and Festival - both costing $5 gave +2 actions) and I wanted one more attack. And I wanted to keep things alphabetical and those two fit like a glove.

These cards, in case you're wondering, are written on the back of the Dominion insert.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

@Tables
1) Your name makes me hungry
2) I didn't know the card was spelled Warehoue.
3) Why not take out Woodcutter and put in Ambassador?
4) Take out Spy for Gardens. I've never seen a deck that needed Spy.
Also, what set are you getting next?

3) Because Ambassador is boring, generally a must buy, leads to slow annoying games with 3+ players and they're so far apart in the alphabet I can't just substitute it in. On top of that, Woodcutter is one of the few Silk Road enablers in the set and there's enough deck filtering cards like Ambassador already. I could see the argument for having a Junker but, eh.

4) I don't have enough attacks already, Spy is generally okay even if it's not a power card, and I already have Silk Road which is similar enough to Gardens.

5) It's a tough call. I'm unlikely to buy any more sets for a while. It'd probably be Prosperity, because I like having Colony games occasionally and like the positive player interaction. Intrigue's base cards are definitely a kicker in it's favor, but I don't particularly like much of the set enough. Cornucopia and Alchemy are relatively more expensive per card so I'd rather save up for a big expansion, but I do love Alchemy.

I was going on vacation and did that too. I had to really stuff it, but I was able to bring some of dominion, about half of intrigue, much of seaside, almost all of alchemy, and about half of prosperity, cornucopia, and hinterlands.

Well, technically you can fit all of the cards into one box, I have every card except governer and walled village in the seaside box. So what do you really mean by this question? like 25 sets + money & victory cards & curses?

@Tables I spell it sob because it makes me sob. I've gotten games where everyone in our 3-4player games (on iso no less) started calling it sob for the same reason. =p
