When to check for three pile ending
« on: October 28, 2017, 02:49:30 pm »

For example:

There are 2 empty piles.
You play a village.
You play Workshop, gaining the last Militia in its pile.
There are now 3 empty piles.
You play Ambassador, returning 2 Militias to their pile.
Your only other opponent gains a Militia.
There are now 2 empty piles.
You end your turn.

Will the game end now or will play continue?

The game will continue. You only check for the end of the game when a turn ends; so emptying a pile and then un-emptying it on the same turn does not cause the game to end.

Welcome to the forum! There will now likely be a bunch more posts answering the question with the same answer but worded differently; and going into all the various situations and edge cases where this matters.

Edge case: there are no edge cases and your answer can't be improved upon. Meta-edge case: someone feels compelled to explain the interactions between Possession, Donate and the game-end-condition even though this wasn't part of the question. :P

Poacher, on the other hand, cares about what the game state is right now.

Also, someone will point out that the same goes for empty Provinces or Colonies as a game-ending condition. If you gain the last one and then ambassador one back to its pile the game continues.

I have run into this problem more than once when I wanted to quickly end a traveller game.

I have run into this problem more than once when I wanted to quickly end a traveller game.
I was thinking about how this could make Vampire games interesting.
