New German Promo 'Abbruch'

Dismantle
Trash a card from your hand. If it costs 1$ or more, gain a cheaper card and a Gold.

The German publisher just revealed this card. It will be in spielbox magazine in November. I don't know about the English one (and my translation of the title is a pure guess).

Not that I don't believe you, but can you link the original source as reference as I can't find it on http://www.dominion-welt.de ?

How is it different in Shelter boards?

You're right, not really. I got caught by the "1" and related to shelters without thinking.

Interesting. So in most cases, if you open with this you can trash an Estate for a Copper and a Gold. I'm not sure how good that is. Probably fine if you can open this / Forager or some other good treasure trasher. Otherwise, with a $2 Kingdom card, maybe it's worth trashing a Silver for a Gold plus that $2.

Trying to think of some other good combos, but Rats is the only thing that comes to mind.

One of the more useful things to do with this is probably "discard a Gold to gain a card costing up to $5".

Well, this is almost strictly better than Trader as a way to get rid of your starting deck, and I sure have used Trader for that so at the very least this won't be a completely useless card.

Why does it have Empires-like art? Or maybe that was unintentional and the pillars just remind me of Empires.

Oh, wow, while typing I just realized this card's actual potential. The comment above me meant "trash" a Gold, not "discard" it.

So the strategy here is to keep trashing Golds to gain $5 cards and more Golds. So it's like Lurker in that it can slowly gain powerful cards. And then it can also trash coppers. You might want to get more than one: One to gain the good cards, the other to get rid of junk.

Woodcutter can also gain $5s in combination with Gold, just not midturn.

It threw me for a second, too. But, no, faust is right. Yeah, sure you actually trash a gold but you gain it right back into your discard pile. so, in effect, you are discarding a gold to gain a $5 card. I that it was a very apt description of the mechanic. Edge cases would only serve to enhance since trashing is actually taking place (Market Square, Rogue, etc.).

The English version is called Dismantle and will be out whenever the German one is (meaning it will show up at the BGG store). RGG will air-ship some in order to have it at the right time (then more will show up the slow way later). Ours will of course have a bigger font.

Altenburger (the German publisher) wanted a promo for tournaments they're running over the next year. I don't see how that works with them getting it into Spielbox, but there it is.

The art shows a person taking away stones from an ancient building for something else.

Which is totally a thing that would happen.  A lot of European cathedrals built in medieval or Renaissance times were constructed from stones taken from Roman ruins.

Wow, they're pissing me off more and more: First they announce to wait a year before releasing Nocturne, then they make a new Promo and don't bring it to Essen, but only maek it available at tournaments which probably be 3 4p games with the same players and no expansion after Seaside again.

What really annoys ME is that I repeatedly told them I was up to helping translate the cards for free (ASS has taken help from fans for a while now), and now they throw out half-assed verbatim translations one year before even planning to actually produce the cards. Devil's Workshop and Dismantle could have stuck with the Workshop and the German equivalent of the Remodel family names easily, but they messed that up, sadly.

You know what's really good for promoting Dominion? Expansions!

Which is to say, desperately needing a promo and then not putting Nocturne out for a year did not make much sense to me either.

They're blaming you / RGG for not telling them about the cards in time by the way. Sounds like a great reason to wait a year.

I also think it sucks they announce the promo the day of previews. I would have waited a week after Nocturne came out for the surprise factor, or at least after previews were done.

I can't say anything about Dismantle, but Nocturne translations were done by your fellow Dominion players, in-house, for Shuffle iT.  They could have gone with Teufelswerkstatt, but they felt Giftkuche was more evocative, and I agree with them.

Why not just get a spielbox copy next month? It's only ~7€ in Germany and worth it even without the promo 😉

Actually, they announced they will also give it away via their Facebook and their forum somehow.

Do we have any information about when this'll be on ShiT?

I'm guessing once it actually gets released. Not sure if that'll be when it gets released in German, or English, or both, or later because Stef has other things to do.

It's soo disappointing, that this card is not distributed in Essen this year. Instead Altenburger decided to make Courtier a promo 😶

Wasn't it that they accidentally neglected including it in the 2nd edition copies? If that's true, it's more of a "fix" than it is a promo. (similar to English Pathfinding, but a worse mistake)

Edit: incidentally, the perspective makes it look loke he's reading something from a piece of grey cardboard while scratching his head. I had to read that he's carrying a stone before I could see it.

No, but the cards in the German Upgrade pack (Base+Intrigue combined) didn't fit onto one printing sheet, so they had to produce one card extra and decided to give it away as a promo card.

I can see the card art becoming a 'what did I just read' meme on this site.

I can't say anything about Dismantle, but Nocturne translations were done by your fellow Dominion players, in-house, for Shuffle iT.  They could have gone with Teufelswerkstatt, but they felt Giftkuche was more evocative, and I agree with them.

Which is why I would have translated it as "Teufelswerk". It's a pun.

Any chance the pun can be explained those of us who know enough German to understand Teufel as devil, but remember work as Arbeit?

"Werk" in "Teufelswerk" means a piece of work, like "Something the devil created". "Teufelswerk!" is what a medieval German person would exclaim when terrified over something that's apparently magic or of devilish nature (imagine a stereotypical movie where somebody travels back in time and shows king Arthur some king a lighter).

Either way, a "Werk" is also a place where things are being manufactured. And of course Workshop is "Werkstatt" in German. So "Teufelswerk" can be translated to "Something created by the Devil" and, on a more subtle level, as "Devil's Manufacture" or, well, "Devil's Workshop".

I just don't understand how anyone can take Germans seriously when they go around calling the Devil a "toiffle".  Like seriously that word is far too whimsical

I'm pretty sure it has to release in Germany first before the US which won't be until 2018

The new versions of the promos all exist, and I personally have them all. How quickly they go out is down to stock running out. I have no prediction there; I don't know how many of each there are or how quickly they tend to sell.

I'm just glad the new versions of Black Market and Envoy are already in the store, since those are the ones that actually contained errors. I guess you could argue that Stash now contains "errors" as well, but somehow that doesn't seem as bad.

I don't think I've ever used Stash in an IRL game.

I still fondly remember the day when my wife (then fiancé) brought Stash home after picking it up at the local game store. Ah, the excitement! And of course we weren't expert Dominion players, so the fact that it was super weak didn't matter. It's such a novel card, even today.

As has mine. Hooray! I think I'll slot it into Empires, along with Sauna/Avanto. Empires has such a dearth of $4 cards, although it does have a glut of cheap trashers. Hmmm…

One of these days, I'm gonna write a browser extension just to make sure I don't have to see these jokes anymore. There was a time they were not funny anymore, and a time they were tedious. By now I cringe so hard every time I see them that it gives me almost physical pain.

On topic: Dismantle should be on ShuffleIt next week.

According to Boardgamegeek, a new promo card is now availible (link: https://boardgamegeekstore.com/collections/frontpage/products/dominion-dismantle ). Any news about when we are able to play with it in the Dominion client?

It wasn't really on my priority list but as you're the third person to ask and it isn't very much work I'll promise to add it within a week (assuming I can get the raw art - that's the only thing where I depend on other people).

No amount of 'beating a dead horse to death' has ever stopped this forum from continuing with awful jokes. That why I was so surprised I hadn't seen any. If you write such an extension, I will gladly use it.

It would be easier to simply write a bot that automatically makes these kinds of jokes, so that the rest of us don't have to.

Are you implying that jokes on the card name "Mine" are not awful or that you did not see them?

Edit: Or are you talking about the extension? That would make more sense. Sorry for that.

I like Dominion Card name puns, Mine has just gotten a little stale since it's the lowest hanging fruit. I mean, I still laugh and give it a "respect", so I don't find them as stale as Asper does I guess.

If anybody were to make a browser extension that removes these puns, I'd like to know what your solution to the Scunthorpe Problem is ;)

If anybody were to make a browser extension that removes these puns, I'd like to know what your solution to the Scunthorpe Problem is ;)

Yeah, that might undermine attempts to naively search for a list of predetermined words. There's a potential minefield of issues to avoid, so you'd probably have to examine a lot of cases and hope for that to illumine some of the imminent pitfalls; then use that data to find the preeminent solution. A determined programmer could get it done without experiencing too much gloominess, but I wouldn't want to be the nominee.

Yeah, that might undermine attempts to naively search for a list of predetermined words.

What does undermint mean?

90% of the Mint/Mine jokes are like this: Very short posts, coming directly after and/or quoting a post that contains one of the words, having moderate respect. There are two or three subtypes of this, for example such as the one we see, where the quoter swaps which word is used. Or, also popular, such where "mine" is used as the regular word for "my stuff" in the original post, and then the "funny" post writes it capitalized and mentiones Treasures, Engines or a Dominion edition.

Even if I just removed all short posts which mention either card and come right after another post which mentions one of them, as long as I exclude, say, the rules question, puzzle and all Base- or Prosperity-specific threads, I feel there's a low chance of false positives. Nobody talks about Mine or Mint. Going into a case destinction to look for one of the ~3 types of these jokes should probably allow to also apply them to forums where a mention of Mine or Mint is not incredibly unlikely.

Point in case: My post is too long to be a punchline.

If you can write such an extension, you should get in touch with AI developers, I hear they are stuck with NLP algorithms :p

Having an AI search through these jokes would raise ethical concerns. The poor machine.

The Dutch translation of mining village, when pronounced, is a homonym for 'my village'.
Nearly every time someone plays a mining village someone will ask 'whose village'?

Dutch mining village reskin please.

Every year at my wife's family reunion, we play Bingo. Every time B4 is called out, the older members shout out "Before what?"

Naturally, this has led the sarcastic younger members to start doing it for everything except B4, as in "B6 what?", etc. The sarcastic response was funny for a while, but now it's just as stale as the B4 thing. As is always the case with a sarcasm arms race, it got ramped up to such absurd levels that now some people do it for every letter/number, like "I18 what?"

As if Bingo wasn't a bad enough game already...

I haven't spotted a FAQ for this card, so I made this myself:

Quote
First you trash a card from your hand, if you have any. If the trashed card has any on-trashed abilities (like Hunting Grounds from Dominion: Dark Ages), or you have an on-trash Reaction such as Market Square (from Dominion: Dark Ages), you resolve them now. Then you check the cost of the trashed card, applying any cost-reducing effects, like that of Bridge (from Dominion: Intrigue) or Highway (from Dominion: Hinterlands) - if the card costs $1 or more, you gain a cheaper card and a Gold. The gained cards must come from the Supply. If there is no cheaper card in the Supply, you still gain a Gold (if available) and vice versa. Cards costing just a Potion (from Dominion: Alchemy) or just Debt (from Dominion: Empires) do not cost $1 or more, so you gain no cards if you trash them. If you do not trash a card, you gain nothing.

Too wordy?

Some potion cards do cost 1 or more, i.e. Alchemist costs more than Silver.

Well that's not true either, Alchemist doesn't cost less (or more) than Duchy.

What is untrue in this statement "Cards costing just a Potion or just Debt do not cost $1 or more, so you gain no cards if you trash them." (in Dismantle context of course) - where "just X" means "no cost in coins, but in X only"?

Add one sentence about the cost maybe? Changeling has similar one.

If there is no cheaper card in the Supply, you still gain a Gold (if available) and vice versa. You gain no cards if the trashed card costs less than $1, even if it normally costs $1 or more. Cards costing just a Potion (from Dominion: Alchemy) or just Debt (from Dominion: Empires) do not cost $1 or more, so you gain no cards if you trash them. If you do not trash a card, you gain nothing.

I can't say anything about Dismantle, but Nocturne translations were done by your fellow Dominion players, in-house, for Shuffle iT.  They could have gone with Teufelswerkstatt, but they felt Giftkuche was more evocative, and I agree with them.

Will the word "erhälst" also be seen on the printed cards?

Quote from: The Secret History of the Dominion Promos
Altenburger also wanted the world champion for this coming year to get to make a card. We said no! We are willing to put their face on a card, that is as far as we will go. However, as it happens, Adam is the current world champion. So a world champion did get to design a card.

So Dismantle is AdamH reading the "Neat and potentially useful card interactions" thread?

Here's my go at a FAQ:

Trashing is not optional.  If you trash a card costing , or if you have no cards left in hand to trash, nothing else happens.  If you trash a card costing or more, you gain a cheaper card and a Gold.  Both come from the Supply, and are put into your discard pile.  The cheaper card goes into your discard pile first.  For example, if you trash a Silver (costing ), you could gain an Estate (costing ).  There will almost always be a cheaper card in the Supply, since Copper and Curse cost , but if there aren't any, you still gain a Gold.  If there aren't any Gold left in the Supply, you still gain the cheaper card.  Cards that cost only (like Transmute from Alchemy) or only (like Engineer from Empires) do not cost or more.

...But cards that have alongside either or in their cost, like Alchemist or Fortune, do cost or more.

I'm just wondering if that additional clause is exactly necessary.
