The current expected ship date is the first week of November. Teasers start October 20 and previews 23-27. The rules will likely go online around the physical release date and it is planned to be availible online the same time it releases.

No-one could possibly know if it was going to be delayed due to a misprint. It's the kind of rumor that would never be correct.

As I have said elsewhere, the release date is hinging on the plastic trays arriving by boat. I will see the cards this week, but only a few trays were air-shipped. I won't know if the trays were delayed until they fail to show up when expected.

I had a dream the other night that it had already been released, does that count?

I will gladly buy a copy before then without the tray. Hell, I don't even need the box. Just throw the shrink-wrapped cards, rules, tokens and whatnot in a cardboard shipping box.

I doubt there is enough demand to have a "ready-to-ship", minimal-packaging version, but I imagine I'm not the only one who would go for such an option.

All Dominion sets should be sold in packages that are big enough to hold the components, without all the extra space. With dividers. Like Paperback, basically. But noooooo, big boxes look better on shelves. Gotta have that big box!

Without the big box, a Dominion expansion takes up only a small fraction of the space that the box takes up. Some people may not be willing to spend so much money on such a small package, and if they were made aware that such a small package contains mostly everything you get with the big box, they might not be willing to spend so much money on the big box either.

I'm falling for this so much. Big box = more value for your money. Even better if the game is heavy.

I've heard this argument before, but I'm not sure I believe it. Many people buy their games online, where this argument is moot. Of those that buy them locally from a brick and mortar, many have researched the game ahead of time. My suspicion is that the percentage of impulse game sales that are influenced by the size of the box are vanishingly small, but I'm happy to be proven wrong if there's data that shows otherwise.

While people like us may research a lot, there are a lot of casual gamers out there.  I think a lot of them would be influenced by a decision like this.

I think that even if you're buying the game online, just knowing that it's a small box IRL can make you less inclined to buy it if it's more expensive than other boxes of roughly the same size.

When I saw the Upgrade Pack boxes and how small they are, I was actually super pleased. I'd prefer if all the sets were packaged that way (with dividers instead of an insert). I understand why it won't happen, though. Sad!

In a game store, it is very easy to overlook a small box. The bigger the box, the more likely you are to take notice.

The story I always tell is, Barnes & Noble approached Indie Boards & Cards - Travis - about stocking The Resistance. The problem was, the box was too small for them. Travis made a version with a bigger box for them.

As I have said elsewhere, the release date is hinging on the plastic trays arriving by boat.
Wild speculation: this suggests the plastic tray is somehow different from that used by other Dominion sets/expansions?

It's the Dark Ages tray. There is incentive not to make new ones.

Either that, or there was some incentive not to make a new tray. Hard to know if that's the case though.

Well, it's not necessarily 20 cards like Rats. My guess is that it would be a non-supply pile.

It is impressive that the cards fit neatly in the Dark Ages tray.

Oh, I know this one. It actually is the case because DXV said so just above there.

There is also possibly a reason to use the Dark Ages one specifically. It is also possible that this was a less-than-100%-serious prediction made for fun.

When designing an expansion, Donald X. probably starts with selecting a tray and then finds good cards that fit it.

Hmmm... what if "night cards" are just piles of cards that have gone back to the tray to sleep, and Nocturne needs the Dark Ages insert in case you send Rats to bed?

I love this game, and own all expansions, as well as gold subscription online, but the trays for recent sets have been my biggest complaint.  I really hope the Nocturne tray is as well made and sturdy as the Dark Ages tray, since that was the last good tray before the production quality of trays deteriorated.  Adventures, Empires, and Dominion Base 2nd Edition have all come with flimsy plastic trays that are just a little smaller than the original sturdier trays, and more importantly had card slots that were 1-2mm less wide than the original tray slots, and taper slightly at the bottom of the slot.  I sleeve every card with Euro premium sleeves, and the new flimsy tray card slot widths bend the sleeves and makes it hard to fit the cards back in without creating a permanent bend in the sleeve and card.  I gave the 1st edition base game away to family, but kept the old tray for myself for the 2nd edition box.  I wish Rio Grande would take sleeving sizes into consideration when the specs for the plastic trays are designed - there is plenty of room to add a couple mm.

It's the Dark Ages tray! I think what you are seeing is the difference between the American and German printers. These trays are being shipped from Germany.

So far Jay continues to not consider sleeves. It seems hard to please everyone there.

It's the Dark Ages tray! I think what you are seeing is the difference between the American and German printers. These trays are being shipped from Germany.

So far Jay continues to not consider sleeves. It seems hard to please everyone there.

Pretty easy, I’d think. Just have all the trays made in Germany, problem solved.

Good to hear - to me at least, it's worth a wait for better trays.  Keep 'em coming from Germany.  Thanks Donald!

Made in U.S.A ain't what it used to be.  I realized that when I do dirty outdoor work (like clearing a fire break below my house on the Peninsula), I still wear a couple Sears work shirts made in US that I bought many years ago as a teenager, and they are still in perfect condition despite heavy use and paint stains...

While I don't doubt that these days everyone is involved in cost engineering and planned obsolescence, it is worth being aware of a common fallacy in this area:

All the appliances I have that I bought in the twentieth century are still going strong after seventeen years, whereas many things I bought recently have broken after only a couple of years. But this statement is inherently true. You've had a lot of time to forget about all the things you bought twenty years ago and threw away fifteen years ago.

Ok, so the Dark Ages tray got 31 slots for 10-12 cards, six for approximately 20 cards and two slots for more (around 50, the slots from ruins and the randomizers). Assuming one of the big slots is again for randomizers, we have one big left. I would suppose it's the one for the hierlooms since for anything else those are probably a bit too many cards, apart from like boons and hexes combined to one pile when stored. Boons and hexes otherwise would take two of the bigger slots, then there are 31 normal and 4 bigger ones left. These are filled up by 33 kingdom cards, with four cards that can contain upgrades like hermit/urchin or a traveller line maybe. In the former case there are two slots left, in the latter one. Are there blank cards? :D

Maybe two traveller lines? That would make me very happy  :D

Or it's possible that there are 50 hexes and fewer than 7 heirlooms per player.

Or 7 heirlooms for each of 6 players = 42 cards, and Hexes come in many kinds each with its own slot?

Most likely the Heirlooms are cards made out of cast iron, so that you can bequeath them to succeeding generations.

Event cards and Landmark cards are also cards. It's just that when you buy an Event, you don't buy the Event card, you buy the effect. It's still not wrong to talk about Event cards as "Events", just like we talk about Action cards as "Actions". The only thing that matters is that "when you buy a card" can't refer to Events, simply because you don't buy the card.

They aren't cards in a dominion-rules-sense. They don't get their prizes reduced by Bridge, you can't gain them with Workshop, can't embargo them, and you don't get curses when buying them while affected by Swamp Hag.

Right, which all means that you don't buy an Event card. The price is not for the Event card, because you can't buy that. You can never gain an Event card either. You can't Embargo an Event card, because it's not a pile. Everything that has to do with buying, gaining or prices of cards, can't refer to an Event card, because it can't be bought or gained and it has no price. Event cards do exist in the rules of Dominion though, they are part of the setup.

Mega-confirmed. Apparently there's some enormous incentive not to make new types of trays.

We could easily spin the speculation into a 10 minute Youtube video for maximum profit. I've got some examples jotted down:

"Hello ladies, gentlemen, and fellow Horse Traders, and welcome back to Dominion Life News, I'm FemurLemur-"
"And I'm LastFootnote-"
"And we received an interesting tweet from @WatchMyDominionStreamsAndLPsGaming, who says he has news of a MASSIVE LEAK regarding the upcoming Dominion Nocturne expansion. We haven't been able to confirm if they're real or not yet, but apparently, Donald X says Rio Grande is under pressure with this new release and has a huge incentive to reuse the Dark Ages box insert. Dark Ages indeed!"

"Is it possible that Rio Grande is facing financial hardship, and that's why they're having to resort to using cheap old Dark Ages inserts? Since they're reusing assets, could we be getting the same product catalogs in the box as Dark Ages had as well? We honestly don't know, but it's possible. Whatever the case, we hope they're able to trash them and gain some inserts costing at least two coins more before release. But what if Rio Grande does go out of business? What will this mean for the future of Dominion!?"

"Honestly LF, here's what's most shocking of all- if you remember, Dark Ages introduced Rats, and the most important thing about them is there are more than 10 of them. So I'm left wondering what's going to go in the Rats slot if they're reusing inserts!? I've heard some speculation on the forums that maybe there will be another Action card that has more than 10 copies, and honestly, I hope not, because that will absolutely ruin the metagame in my opinion. Because like, then what!? Are you gonna release another card similar to Ratcatcher!? I seriously doubt it, because then the expansion would have to include more Tavern Mats. That's why Magpie was limited to only 10 copies. Donald always knew that having more than one Action with 20 copies was a bad idea, and it's concerning that now he could be going back on that. I'm telling you LF, no matter how you look at this whole 'another card like Rats' thing, it's cancer. If they introduce another Rats, I'm about to Chapel my entire collection if you know what I mean"

"I tend to take a more optimistic view than you. I think this is obvious evidence that we're either getting our first split pile with 4 different cards in it, or that slot is for more Potions and we're finally seeing the return of Alchemy. I think especially given that they're going to have to compromise on the inserts, Donald X is going to pull out all of the stops. He knows this is a huge let-down, and I would be shocked if he wasn't planning on making up for it. I'm talking Reaction-Attacks that punish the original attacker, more Alchemy cards, A Victory Card that rewards buying Gold, more cards like Moat, Confusion finally released; just all of the stuff the hardcore fans have been begging for."

"Good point, that all probably will happen. We've heard a lot of rumors that maybe Looters would be returning in this expansion, and honestly, at this point it might as well be confirmed given that there's space for more Ruins. But what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to follow us on Twitter @LFnFL. That's 'At LastFootnote FemurLemur' for all things Dominion related"

It’s really quite simple: manufacturing tooling costs a lot of money. Stocking multiple different kinds of parts costs a lot of money, too. It’s just way cheaper to use the same stuff across multiple sets, by like a lot. It’s just the economies of scale and mass production.

Probably, yes, but this also has utility when the blind person is the left side passenger. This is typically how caretakers will bring blind people to ATMs without having to get their PIN.

Your quote from the rulebook doesn't contradict anything I've said. And as navical pointed out, the Event cards are called Event cards in the rulebook. "Event cards" are also part of the setup rules, as previously pointed out.

I don't see how.
Rule #1) Instead of buying a card, you can buy an Event.
Rule #2) Buying an Event means paying its cost, stated on the Event card, and then doing the effect stated on the Event card.
Rule #3) Event cards can't be bought or gained.

Event, $40
New Dominion Expansion
Open the box. If you did, examine the contents.

Setup: In games involving this, read teasers and previews of upcoming cards(haped-things). Speculate on how they would interact with the rest of the board.

But nowhere in the rules are actual Events (the thing you can buy) called Event cards. It seems like you're saying that the rules talk about buying Event cards (or else I don't see the contradiction you're talking about). But of course the rules don't say that, since, you know... buying an Event is not buying a card. So maybe you can make your case in a bit more structured way this time.

Event, $40
New Dominion Expansion
Open the box. If you did, examine the contents.

Setup: In games involving this, read teasers and previews of upcoming cards(haped-things). Speculate on how they would interact with the rest of the board.

Also speculate on how they would interact with Scout.

Right, which all means that you don't buy an Event card.
It contradicts this.
Rule #2) Buying an Event means paying its cost, stated on the Event card, and then doing the effect stated on the Event card.
It clearly says the cost is stated on the event.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make anymore. Quoting myself: It's still not wrong to talk about Event cards as "Events", just like we talk about Action cards as "Actions". Ok, I'll try to put in a very simple way so you can understand it.

Your case seems to be that an event card is something totally unrelated to the event. The rules make clear that the thing you can buy is the thing that has a cost printed on it.

So it's entirely unclear to me what you think an Event card is.

It makes way more sense that an Event and the corresponding Event card are the same thing, and that they're not cards, in a similar way as Fool's Gold is not Gold, and you can't gain it with Bandit.

The current expected ship date is the first week of November. Teasers start October 20 and previews 23-27. The rules will likely go online around the physical release date and it is planned to be availible online the same time it releases.

at what time?

Oh, I'm sorry, I got very confused by your distinction between two things that are the same. See the fixed version below.

Your case seems to be that an event card is something totally unrelated to the event. The rules make clear that the thing you can buy is the thing that has a cost printed on it.

Ok, so your argument rests on this foundation: Events are the same as Event cards, and so whenever it says "Event", it's short for Event card (like Treasure or Attack). So you actually claim that we buy Event cards, but Event cards are not considered cards. I'm sorry, but this is pretty weird. A card is actually a physical component that you can buy and gain in Dominion, this is why buying an Event is not buying a card, because you can't actually buy that card. You say "Event card" is just a name, like "Fool's Gold". But "Event card" is clearly not a name (except for the "Event" part), it's called that because it's an actual card! Do you really think it's just a coincidence that Donald chose to call it Event card and it also happens to be a card physically speaking? A Coin token is called that, but it's because it's physically a token, so when Possession mentions tokens, Coin tokens are included. By the same token :p Event cards are physical cards, but the cost stated on them is not the cost of buying the actual card (since, you know, you can't), but rather the cost of buying the Event it describes.

Note that nowhere do the rules ever talk about buying an Event card. Event cards are only mentioned as something that is included in the game and can be shuffled during setup.

You claim that you don't buy this weird event card thing, but buy the Event itself. It follows that the Event card is not the thing that has a cost printed on it.

No, that doesn't follow at all. Costs of things you can buy can be printed on all kinds of game components: game boards, player aids, cards, tiles, even rulebooks. It's just that for Events in Dominion, the cost and the thing you get are both printed on the same card. That's not disputable. The thing you get is not that card. That's not disputable either.

Can you explain to me what you believe an event card is?

I could see a distition between the physical object and the "rules" of an event, but as I stated previously, the rules clearly say that the cost is indicated on the event, so the physical object is referenced by the word event.

What makes me even more confused about this distinction you seem to be making is the way this discussion started:
Most likely the Heirlooms are cards* made out of cast iron, so that you can bequeath them to succeeding generations.

*card-shaped objects

Event cards and Landmark cards are also cards.
You mentioned that you believe Event cards and Landmark cards are cards in response to a disagreement about wether Heirlooms would be cards or just card-shaped objects, but you don't seem to disagree with the statement "Events are not cards", so I don't see why you would disagree with "Heirlooms might not be cards", just how you would disagree with the statement "Heirloom cards" might not be cards.

So what do you believe happens when I play a Bridge?
A) The cost of the Event card decreases, but the cost of the Event card does not.
B) Neither the cost of the Event nor the cost of the Event card decreases.
C) Both the costs decrease, but it somehow doesn't matter because Bridge's discount is only relevant when you buy a card
D) Something else

I could see a distition between the physical object and the "rules" of an event, but as I stated previously, the rules clearly say that the cost is indicated on the event, so the physical object is referenced by the word event.

An Event card is the physical card where the Event is described and the cost of the Event is stated.
The rules sometimes call Event cards "Events". (It crucially never does the opposite.) I already mentioned this twice, last time it was as a direct response to that very post where you stated that previously. Perhaps it would have made things clearer if the rules didn't do that.

When we talk about Kingdom cards, Events, Landmarks and other cards that are included in the game, we are talking about them as cards. So we mean Event cards (and Landmark cards). These cards can be shuffled and can be included in the game. Save is an Event card that can be included in a game, for instance if we draw that card from the shuffled pile of cards during setup. But when you buy Save, you buy the Event, not the Event card. When we talk about what's included in an expansion, it's pointless to talk about actual cards as "card-shaped objects".

(In A you state "Event card" twice.) B is more or less what I mean, except that it refers to the Event card is if it has a cost; it doesn't. The cost is for what you can buy. Something you can't buy wouldn't have a cost.

So to continue the discussion of the card tray: I just tested it and 16 unsleeved cards fit nicely into a 10-card slot, so Heirlooms could be with their respective kingdom cards. Cemetery would probably take up a 20-card slot in that case. No idea about the Spirits, though. Maybe that'll become clear later on.

My current theory is that the Spirits all belong to one pile like Knights/Prizes/Castles/Ruins, but the sorting of them doesn't matter, because cards will either tell you specifically which spirit to get, or will tell you to pick which one you want (like Tournament does with Prizes). I think that idea works given that the phrasing on cards have been "Gain a Ghost from its pile", rather than "Gain a Ghost from the Ghost pile" (or is that just a 2nd Edition thing?) Maybe Spirits fill the Ruins slot. Makes sense since having all of those separate piles on the table would be tedious. Although that didn't stop Travellers from existing, so I could be way off here.

It's not exactly a 2nd Edition thing, but you have the right idea. It just saves words, and there was no confusion, so we went with it.

I have no idea what goes where inside the actual Nocturne box, though.

Out of interest, why the need to say "gain an XYZ from its pile" or "gain an XYZ from the XYZ pile" rather than merely "gain an XYZ", when gaining from a non-supply pile? Does the non-supply pile somehow mean it's no longer obvious and implicit where to gain from?

You can't gain cards that aren't in the Supply. Workshop can't gain Cursed Gold because it's not in the Supply. It needs to say "From its pile" to override that restriction. Otherwise you'd be playing Workshops to gain Mercenaries and Warriors with impunity.

"Gain card x" means "Gain card x from the Supply". (Otherwise "gain a Wharf" would let you gain the Wharf your opponent has in play.)

"Gain card x" means "Gain card x from the Supply".
Yes, but...

...why not just say "Gain card x" means "Gain card x from its Pile"? How is that not simple and obvious and identical in meaning for all existing cases where something just says "Gain an X"?

You mean like, "Gain a card costing up to $4"? I'll just take that Fugitive, thank you very much.

Nono. "Gain an X" == from its Pile. "Gain a card" == from the Supply.

It might look a little wonky, but I suspect it's intuitive enough that it would cause less confusion overall.

Well it was considered for this set. In the end Donald X. stuck with specifically calling out sources that aren't the Supply, albeit with fewer words ("its pile").

I think that could work, but there would still be cases where people could get confused, like Pilgrimage, Smugglers and others that say "gain a copy".

As I have said elsewhere, the release date is hinging on the plastic trays arriving by boat.
Wild speculation: this suggests the plastic tray is somehow different from that used by other Dominion sets/expansions?
It's the Dark Ages tray. There is incentive not to make new ones.

Ooh so there's a 20 card pile to go in the Rats slot

Schrödinger's Cat
$π - Action

This pile is both empty and not empty.

Until you try to gain a Card from it.

The main reason not to say "being told to gain a card by name works even if it's not in the supply" at this point is the precedent of not doing it, including all those revised editions of expansions. It is a slightly tricky rule to explain but seems mostly okay otherwise. I might have done it if I'd thought of it before everything got revised.

There is a corner case, which is, lots of cards gain the base cards. And you often have more of them than you're using; it's a 2-player game, we're only using 10 Curses, they ran out, but wait there are more in the box. So you would need to exempt the base cards.

It would not be enough to exempt base cards, because in 2-player games several Kingdom Victory cards would also be in the box (although I think at present only Small Castle's "gain a Castle" would cause a problem). You would have to define exact setup rules for which cards are included in the game. ("If any card in the game mentions gaining a specific non-Kingdom card, include the pile of that non-Kingdom card."*)

*Edit: Doesn't work for Tournament and Exorcist (at least). You would also have to talk about gaining a specific type of card.

A similar issue is why taking Deluded, Envious, or Miserable can't mean taking one away from another player. Fool has you take Lost in the Woods away from other players. I guess there's probably just a thing in the rulebook that says, "Hey, there's only one Lost in the Woods and you take it away from someone if they have it. But take those other things from their piles; they're different."

(Obligatory edge case for why you would ever want to take a Hex state away from an opponent: your opponent already has Deluded and you want to give him Envious so he can't afford the last Province. I got nothin' for Misery, though. Kingmaking? Showing off?)

I got nothin' for Misery, though.

4 player game. The player to your left plays the attack and you take the Misery from the player to his left to make him believe he could win the game by buying the last Province (he's  7 points behind you with Misery and only 5 without). However, if he buys the Province, this will enable you to trash a Fool's Gold and boost your Palace score by 3 for the win. If he doesn't buy the Province, the player to his left would be able to do it, but as he has only two less points than you currently do, you wouldn't be able to catch up with him even if you trash the Fool's Gold. So you really want that ex-miserable player to buy the Province. As to why he'd fall for it, he thinks you're just showing off because you lost track of his Treasure points.

RGG now expects stores to get copies Thursday or Friday (Nov 16-17), depending on where they are in the country. There won't be a "street date," they will just be allowed to sell them when they get them in.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but what's the status of Amazon selling Nocturne? As of yet there are only sellers selling it through Amazon, but that is crazy expensive. The problem is mainly the shipping, since I live outside the US (Mexico). When Amazon sells it, the shipping to here is reasonable. I ordered the last few sets from them.

Or is there another good place to order Nocturne to be delivered outside the US?

Isn't this always how it is? Amazon proper doesn't offer pre-orders for Dominion sets. I'm not sure if they usually get it when everybody else does, but I feel like I remember them getting Empires pretty late.

I worked at Amazon. The problem is, especially after the holiday season they need to unpack the shipments and have people get the items into a bin so it can be sold online. Plus, around this time, they tend to have a weeklong backlog of trucks from inbound. Oh, and before all that takes place, they have to figure out how to distribute everything among all their fulfillment centers across the US.
