World Cup 2018 Interest Thread & Discussion

Hi. This is an announcement I suppose. Amoffett and I (and maybe Breppert) are going to organize a World Cup sometime in early 2018. The date isn't set in stone yet. For now, I am trying to generate interest/come up with ways to potentially improve the WC. For now the rules will be the same as last time around, but that could change. For example, How would teams be grouped? Should there be a second US team/Japan team? Should it be mandatory for each player to own all expansions? Should there be a refugee team for countries that cannot fill a roster? How are team captains decided? There are all sorts of avenues to explore and I think it's worthwhile to generate some civil discussion about it all.

Awesome! A lot of players in the US - so two teams would be nice

I think that by default, each country should have one team. Having more than one team per country or more than one country per team should only be done on a case-by-case basis if we need more teams after each country with 4 players has gotten one. Which is probably going to be the case, but it shouldn't be the default thing to do.

Just picking the highest ranked player as the captain should be fine. The only other way is basically to let the teams elect a captain on their own, which is almost certainly always just going to be the highest ranked player anyway, and either way it just makes things less convenient.

I don't think owning expansions should be mandatory. It hasn't been mandatory in the past and it has never caused any problems, and now we have second edition Base for the non-subscribers which is way better than first edition.

Something I am leaning towards is more general secondary teams. Instead of having two USA teams, there could be a USA team and an Americas (North & South America) team. Instead of two Japanese teams, there could be a Japanese and an Asian team. Then conceivably there could be Russia, Netherlands, Germany, and Europe as teams to make 8. This is a silly hypothetical, and it all depends on eventual turn out.

I have recently discovered that there is a semi-active brazilian Dominion community (it seems mostly focused on IRL play, but there are some people who seem to play online), so it might be possible to form a brazilian team (albeit not a very competitive one...), if it's ok with organizers, and there is interest from other people, other cool ideas might be a Latin America team (I believe Canada can make it's own team, right?), or even a Southern Hemisphere team (best players from half the globe!...) Still have no idea if either of those would actually  have enough players...

I might be interested to play as this would mean I won't lose 0-6 against drsteelhammer again.

I mean it all depends on the turnout. I'm just talking theory right now, I have no idea how it will go. It could be nobody in the US wants to play, or that suddenly France can field 2 really good teams. I have no idea until the actual turnout happens. :P

Balancing good teams with countries playing is the main trick.

I am also interested. I would be part of the "not very competitive" Brazilian team (alongside gloures :))).
How many players are required to make a team?

That is actually not set in stone. Last time around it was 4 players a team with reserves, but it could just as easily be 5.

How will you confirm nationalities?  If a player competed for one country in the past, can they play for another if they naturalize?  Any restrictions on amateur vs. pro?

Good questions.

1. I think it will be up to the person playing where they want to play, assuming they have citizenships for both places. If not, then they're stuck with wherever they are. Of course, I would imagine there would be exceptions for people newly migrating to other countries, and they can pick which team they're on. It'll all be in signups whenever that gets going.

2. I would want a standard of quality with all of the teams. How I would enforce that, I don't know. But if a team is say, 4 people from a given country and maybe one of them are above rating 50, I don't know if that should be a legitimate team, given the past entrees. It depends on how many countries we're getting. It could be for the sake of balance that we group nations into a single team for a more competitive experience.

All of this is speculative, and I'm glad these questions are being asked. I want the best situation for anyone, so feel free to leave suggestions!

For the last (Dominion) World Cup, Canada failed to form a team. Only two players (including me) signed up. The World Cup before that Canada did have five or six players in the team.

Some sort of "Rest of Americas" team can help Canada as well.

I'm English not British anyway, so playing for the Russian team would be just as foreign as playing for the British team.

If you can play for any country's team, then I suspect Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic might do pretty well in the tournament.

That's a pretty unfair comparison.  You can't compare the glory of winning the Dominion World Cup with the dinky imitation "world cup" that soccer uses.

I very much dislike it when people do this. For some of the players they have a citizenship to these other countries so they can go ahead and do it, but with what Joseph was asking, why would someone who's never even been to Russia let alone live there want to be on a Russian team, for example?

Can I sign up for a country I'm not related to?

Um the entire point is you're playing for your country. If that's thrown out the window, what point is there in a World Cup?
Because my country England doesn't have an independent team......

I don't understand why a province that isn't recognised by the UN as a country is allowed to masquerade as a country for the purposes of sport.  :P

This is obviously still going on and I'll make the thread soon after the ShuffleIT Tourney ends. I've thought more about things but I still do think it will mostly depend on what gets the most amount of good players in.

Removing those teams is an exercise in making people unhappy, seriously unhappy, in order to ... in order to do what exactly?

I find this a good opportunity to ask it here. Is there is any Hungarian player in the community?
Although I doubt I find enough for a semi-competitive team.

We can form an Austro-Hungarian Team...

I would like to join, but I don't think there's any other danish players.
There is a danish facebook board gaming group, where I can try to ask and search for 3 other players (or however many is required).

I don't think the competitiveness should have any factor at all in the teams. If a country can put together enough players they should be allowed to compete.
I think there should just be a rule of "1 team per country" or "2 teams per country" and then make a competition with the signed up teams.
And I think players signed up from countries without enough players should be put together by the tournament leader(s), so players from countries near eachother form teams. (So you can sign up without a full team, but then you aren't guaranteed to be put in the tournament).

Hello,
I would interested in participating in such an event. I know at least one more player from Turkey (iremio :-)), and I believe there may be more. Perhaps we could also team up with another country (Denmark?), though I am not sure if that would be allowed.

cheers,
ato (therem.harth)

When the sign-up thread is up, just sign up, list your country, your ShuffleIT username and we'll see what happens from there!  :D It'll all be based on turnout. I can't promise anything else. As listed before, I am quite happy to create groups of countries as a singular team, The Refugee Team.

I'm from DK. I don't have a subscription to dominion.games and I'm probably highly mediocre (on a good day), but I would happily click on card-shaped objects for the proverbial lulz.

A colleague of mine plays Dominion. I can poke him and ask if he's interested... ?
