The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, figure it out.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided, unencrypted information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Quoting of QTs is impossible.
5. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
6. All night actions must be submitted within 36 hours of day ending.
7. Players must post once every 24 hours.
8. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
9. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are definitely allowed.
10. Cryptography is required.
11. The time between a lynch being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the lynched player.
12. Dead players may not post in thread. A lynched player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
13. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may vote: no lynch.
5. Lynches occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, a lynch cannot be undone.

The Rest:
1. Bold, greenish text is reserved for the Mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please write to the Mod encrypted in his public key. Please post complaints in the game thread, encrypted, of course.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via the main thread encrypted in his public key. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
6. One prod will be issued after 48 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.

Deadlines:
1. Days will last seven IRL days.
2. Nights will last between 36 and 48 hours, as determined by the mod and announced at the beginning of the night.
3. Night action phase submission deadline will be 36 hours after the night begins.

Setup Post:

Roles are all invented by the mod to some degree.

Mechanics
  • During the signups phase, players will create a public/private key pair by this site: http://nmichaels.org/rsa.py (make sure you click generate to make a new key pair).  This is the only cryptography key you can generate for this game.
  • Players will then post their public key in the thread.  Sharing of private keys is prohibited. All private keys will be required to be publicized at the end of the game.
  • All PMs will be sent in the main thread, using the public keys of the players.
  • Each night, players will be required to check in by sending something to the mod that will be posted in the main thread encrypted using each players' public key.  This is only to ensure that scum have at least 2 messages they can use to communicate to each other.
In the post to each player, I will tell them what they have to send back to me, and in what time ranges.
  • Wincons are the same as most games. Town wins when scum is all dead and scum wins when they control half the town, or nothing can stop that.
  • This game is BM only because there is probably a way to break it, but I have actually tried to balance the roles, and make it so that there aren't any extremely apparent ways to cheat, but I definitely probably missed something.

Instructions for using the encryption site

To encrypt a message to Player A:
 - Copy Player A's public key from the main thread into the box labelled "Public Modulus (hexadecimal):"
 - type your message in the box labelled "Text:"
 - click "encrypt"
 - Paste that "message" (should look like a bunch of "0xb2" things) in the thread

To decrypt a message sent to you:
 - Copy your private key (from the note that you saved when you created your key pair) into the box labelled "Private Exponent (hexadecimal):" and your public key into the box labelled "Public Modulus (hexadecimal):" (technically you shouldn't need this, but it sometimes game me an error when I didn't put it there)
 - Copy the message into the box labelled "Text:"
 - click "decrypt"
 - read the message!

If this plays well enough I could see it being run as "normal" in the future. Very interested.

Man. I had four strips of bacon yesterday. Was one automatically undercooked, one automatically overcooked? No, let's put a stop to that right here, all four strips were excellent.

Everyone signing up needs to create a key pair.  Just go to the website linked in the setup post and click generate.  Save your private key in a note or something somewhere, and post your public key in the thread.

This sounds complicated.  Will all posts be encrypted in thread?  So, like, no need to spectate?

You only need to encrypt messages that you only want certain players to read.  So basically anything that you would have normally put in a QT, is now in the main thread.

I can make a speccy, if people want one.  I was kind of trying to make it so that I don't have to do anything with PMs or QTs, for the novelty of it.

No need for speccy just for me or whatever.  I'm not going to bother decrypting anything anyway.

Very true.  The only way that I felt I could mitigate it was by having people send many messages at points during the night.  If anyone has any better ideas, feel free to tell them to me!

I agree this is some alleviation but I'd say it's a pretty big tell early on and then as the game progresses. It's still super intriguing.

I guess I don't know how important talking at night for the mafia is.  Is it that huge of a bonus?  It looks like especially the first night, it is just saying "cool we are partners, this is my role, here is your role", which I can do in the role posts for them anyways.

At least one message is needed to send the kill. So that leaves one message for coordinating said kill and everything else...
Like you said day talk is a plus but much at all is going to be a tell, imho.

I am anxious to see how this plays out.

Each night, players will be required to check in by sending something to the mod that will be posted in the main thread encrypted using each players' private key.
This should be a "public" I think

At least one message is needed to send the kill. So that leaves one message for coordinating said kill and everything else...
Like you said day talk is a plus but much at all is going to be a tell, imho.

I am anxious to see how this plays out.

I was going to point out that you don't have to say publicly who you're communicating with (you can just post an encrypted message that everyone has to decrypt, but only one player will be able to successfully decrypt it), but I think you run into trouble then if everyone posts publicly whether or not they were able to decrypt your message.  Your scum buddy could deny it as well to stay hidden, but then you look very suspicious for having a communication with someone who won't admit that you're communicating with them.

This has the potential to be really cool, but I think the roles really need to be very cleverly designed to maximize the meaningfulness of private communication and signatures.  I think the much bigger issue is that it will be very tedious and people will probably lose interest quickly because of that (but I'd love to be proven wrong).

Also, if there are powerful PR's, you may not need to require that town post at night.  It might be interesting to see what happens if no one is required to post; VT's might want to post so that they look like PR's and draw the NK's, or scum might want to deliberately not kill so that they look like VT's (though that only works if other PR's are posting).

It would be nice if you could at least reveal what the win conditions are and how many people have each win condition... too many games have gone wrong for me because of uncertainty about that

Yes, that is something that I'm still deciding on. I'll definitely post them when I have them ready. There is also a possibility of this turning into a 12 person game if there is enough interest.

I feel like it would be a breaking strategy if town decided to disallow all encrypted posts, lynching anyone that uses encryption. That blocks any conversation between scum.

I think town has a lot to gain by sending messages to each other, so I'm not sure that would be worth it. Scum could win without communicating with each other

I have been thinking that somebody needs to try the cryptography stuff we've been talking about.  Fascinated to see how this plays out!  I might join at a later date.

I assume gkrieg thought of this and gave town a reason to want to communicate as well.

I'm wondering how it would be to make a third site that scrapes the game thread (would require login credentials since the game is not public) and then searches known keys and renders plain text for all matching results while keeping the threaded format. It's a ton of work for one game but maubevworthwhile for more. Does simple machines have a plugin to do this internally? Biggest issue I am seeing with this game is the tedious, non persistent means of decryption.

If anything I'd recommend a smaller player count because of this.

I feel like it would be a breaking strategy if town decided to disallow all encrypted posts, lynching anyone that uses encryption. That blocks any conversation between scum.

I assume gkrieg thought of this and gave town a reason to want to communicate as well.
I suppose. It's just hard for me to see what incentive would be big enough.

On another note, you probably want to prohibit players from sharing their private keys. Otherwise I can always prove that I didn't communicate with another team member, which will probably break things.

I thought communicating via encryption was mandatory, so you didn't have the option to -not encrypt- your post.

You only need to encrypt messages that you only want certain players to read.  So basically anything that you would have normally put in a QT, is now in the main thread.

And anyway you could always send a message encrypted to all other players one after another, so that's not really something you can enforce.

That is why I'm forcing people to check in a couple times using different words with me at night.

The game will mainly be unencrypted, with only secret communications being encrypted.

So thinking more about this, scum just knowing who their partner is and not communicating at all, with a completely vanilla 2 vs. 7 game should be balanced right?

It would be significantly less fun, and I really don't think that town would go along with it (who wouldn't want to use their shiny PRs!), but it should still be technically balanced.

The other thing to do is make the vanilla setup slightly less town-favored, so that they don't want to default to that.  Either way, everyone will be required to check in at night, which means that at least every person needs to post one encrypted message during the night.

Another interesting quirk of this setup is that people who post encrypted messages will be posting something that even the mod can't read!

For accountability, should all players reveal their private keys after the game is over? I mean, I don't think anyone would cheat anyway but it would be trivial for town to coordinate a private key claim using encrypted messages and you wouldn't have any idea that the entire town is secretly ICing themselves.

True.  I actually think that the private keys are too long to encrypt using that site, so it shouldn't be a problem.  But yes that would make people more accountable for what they say.

You could even encrypt/decrypt with a different tool, and give instructions in your first post on how to use the tool to decrypt your next post (to provide your private key).

Also, does this mean Town gets Nightchat? That'd be pretty sweet.

If we go that route I'd like to be able to still say "@Liopoil: (encrypted message block)" so we're not all having to try to decrypt everything.

I think I'm going to make it nightless, or at least short nights.  Then people have incentive to post night actions multiple times during the day because you can't know for sure when it will end.

Nightless fixes a LOT of the issues I came up with as far as how to break the setup.

Ok. It will really resemble an RMM or M game. No lying from mods or anything. I consider the fact that I will force everyone but scum to post a couple of encrypted messages a day a posting restriction, so it can't be a normal game.

Just going to bump this if people want a game.  If this doesn't fill, I will probably abandon it and may start a normal game with no theme.

This is building like the slowest wagon I have ever seen.

Further, you may need to rule that the only cryptography that is allowed is via a single private key that will be revealed at game end.

I think you are correct.  The concept is not actually that different, and the game will be pretty simple.  Also the website makes it very easy to encrypt/decrypt stuff.

Not sure if Calamitas and chairs are still in (they probably aren't?). I guess Calamitas was on the forum earlier today, but chairs last login date is June 30th, so I will definitely remove him from the player list.

The public keys of LaLight, Simon Jester and jotheonah all look very similar. Simon's is missing the last 8 bytes, but otherwise they look identical...

Good point. It looks like they didn’t press the “generate” button on the site before copying it over.

I took Calamitas out of the game because I didn’t hear back from him when I said I would take him out before, so this still has one spot left.
