How to Base Dominion

So, I've started recording a series of base games for newer players to learn how to play.

Those who don't want to be overwhelmed with all the new cards at once,
or the ones who don't want to buy a subscription yet and are stuck with a lot of base games
might find these videos useful.

My current plan is to add a video per day.

Give it a try!

Questions on strategy, constructive criticism, pointless nitpicking, suggestions on how I can improve those are all welcome!

Saw the post a few days ago, forgot to watch/comment until today.

Nicely done. I'm not a bad player, and I still have a ways to go apparently because I would not wait as long as you would to green sometimes - I would call it quits on the deck-building at maximum double province myself with all-base games. Now I know.

You do a great job talking about what your deck needs at the time being, and what cards will immediately help you accomplish it. The quick pregame thoughts are helpful too when you discuss your opening and how you expect the game to go. I'd imagine it's tough to go from your standard commentary to beginner-focused, but it's done well.

Pointless nitpicking:

I think it's just as important to say what not to as it is to say what to do, so you could pay attention and comment some more on your opponent. You talk about some misplays, but you could go even further, and mention their specific decisions like them not 4-card-chapel trashing, opening Market over Sentry, etc. It would definitely help to slow down the card animations too. Going the other way, you definitely acknowledged them, but you can also really emphasize some of the cool combos like remodeling Provinces to end the game faster, how Poacher works really well with Library, stuff like that.

That's a lot to keep in mind, so don't worry about addressing all of it, just food for thought. Liked it a lot overall though, nice work!

Hey, love this series and the next video is something I look forward to every day.

In the latest video (#15) you decide to open with both Chapel and Sentry, which surprised me because Chapel is such an effective trasher on its own. Is the additional trashing from Sentry really more effective than grabbing an early engine piece like a Festival? You crushed your opponent so obviously it worked but what's the reasoning here?

While I haven't watched the video yet, Sentry is actually just as useful for its scouting effect as the trashing in a lot of cases. It can also help you line up Chapel more often early/cycle to other important cards.

I am glad you like the videos! :)

On something like an avarage draw Sentry/Chapel opening provides a crazy amount of trashing: if none of them miss the shuffle you are almost clean by turn five.
Opening Festival/Chapel could have been just fine on that board, but I think it is a bit slower.

This series is fantastic. I'll definitely recommend it to everyone new to Dominion, and plenty of people who aren't!

I'm curious if you select the games that make it into the video series. In the several videos Iíve watched you never play a simple money strategy. I'm wondering if this is reflective of 2e Base Set being so much friendlier to action-heavy decks that a simple money strategy is (at least in 2-player games) very rarely correct, or if it's because you didn't show us the less exciting games.

Two requests:
First, find another top 100-level player and play a few Base only games so that people can see some of the more complex strategic considerations, particularly in games where both players go for action-heavy strategies.  Your league videos show these well but will have a lot of cards that newer players won't know.  For example, in this series you typically are the one piling out with a points lead, and you're never really worried that your opponent will do the same to you. Happy to fill in after I'm not participating in the league tournament if the timing works out.

Second, if in the future the client gets a "show all cards" feature, please show all cards at the start of each game.

The second edition of the base set is quite friendly to engine

The boards look pretty representative of the base-only games that I've played

Thanks for your feedback, JW!

I'm curious if you select the games that make it into the video series.

I ditched some games, mostly because they were getting repetitive - not because they were money.
So base-only big money games are pretty rare nowadays it looks like.

Well, if I am doing something like that i know whom I'll be writing first :)

Thanks for your feedback, JW!

Thanks for the responses! I had a couple further questions - I'm wondering if making this series has led you to have a good estimate of the subscription rate among lower-rated players.

I assume that you find games for the series as rated games via automatch.  What percentage of the games found via automatch are with someone who is a subscriber? And what's the typical level of your opponents?  (I assume you're auto-resigning non-base set games in making this series).

Sorry, but I can't really help you here, just don't have any numbers. Most games were definitely with non-subscribers.
And opponents' levels were more or less matched with my alt level (30-ish, 40-ish).
