Golden Sombrero question

Does it count as a golden sombrero if your opening $5 misses the shuffle and you didn't buy another card in the opening?

I'd say no, since this is much more likely, but I guess it does suck about the same amount.

If we're gonna say "names for things in Dominion are stupid" about terms like Trash for Benefit, the term Golden Sombrero is far far far dumber.

Also, whenever someone says "splitter" I think of that scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

It's not though. TfB is a strategically misleading term, golden sombrero is a fun term.

I only know of the term Golden Sombrero from baseball - it is when a batter strikes out 4 times in the same game, a relatively rare but ignominious accomplishment.  I don't really care for its application here - in baseball, it's indicative of poor performance, but in Dominion, it would be indicative of bad shuffle luck?  A Golden Sombrero in Dominion to me would be like being a Village or (if you're a bot on Goko) Warehouse Idiot.

I know it was coined by AdamH.  I still haven't a clue what it means.

At least I have a general idea what TfB means.

Golden Sombrero = when all your opening buys miss the reshuffle. I have no idea why it's called that.

It was actually coined by Wandering Winder. (Before Adam's time I'm pretty sure.)

It means your turn 1 and 2 buys are the 11th and 12th cards after your first shuffle (no shenanigans e.g. Doctor).

The baseball term is its origin. Because it is fantastically bad.

Did I miss a recent turbulent discussion on the term "TfB" somewhere? I mean, I know that discussion is bound to get messy the moment cards like Altar and Forager are brought up.

Edit: yup, looks like there is such a discussion going on. Better read through that thread.

I'd say no, since this is much more likely, but I guess it does suck about the same amount.

Actually I think it has the same chance of happening.

Probability of opening 5/2: 1/6
Probability of $5 buy missing shuffle: 1/11

Probability of both cards missing the shuffle on 3/4 opening: 1/66

It's invalid calculation if you apply the opening chance to the 5/2 situation, but not to the 3/4 opening.

You beat me to it. I had a rather more long-winded answer in progress.
