How to get 2nd edition except for Dominion and Intrigue
« on: March 07, 2017, 10:17:30 am »

Hi, I'm surprised I haven't found anyone asking. I guess it's not possible that I'm the only one wondering, so it must be in here somewhere. I'm probably just terrible at searching.

My question is: How can I get my hands on physical copies of second edition versions of Hinterlands, Prosperity and the promos? According to the wiki, these are the sets currently available in second edition print (in addition to the labeled Dominion and Intrigue).

Amazon can't say if they have the first or the second edition versions (and they've told me to ask RGG!?!), my FLGS currently can't get them, as the distributor doesn't know how to distingush the different versions. I've searched extensively (IMHO) for these online, but I can't find anyone selling these, or knowing that they're selling these. Can anyone please help?

If you're looking in person, the back of the box should say "requires Base game or Base Cards pack to play", whereas the first edition would call Intrigue a standalone set.  You can also check the copyright - 2nd edition should be copyright 2016.

Online, if it costs a normal amount ($30-50), it's probably 2nd edition.  If it costs something exorbitant (~$100), it's probably 1st edition.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I visited my FLGS the other day and, having read DXV's comment about looking for a reference to the "first edition" of Intrigue, it was clear they didn't get the updated version in their latest shipment.

When it comes to costs online, I'm afraid "probably" isn't going to cut it for me. I have all sets and promo cards. The cards that are translated to Norwegian are included twice in my collection, in both their English and their Norwegian versions, and I also have a Japanese Alchemy. I'm a completist, and risking getting the first edition versions again isn't that appealing, especially because I have to pay loads of money for shipping to Norway in addition to the cost of the game itself.

Does anyone know for sure where I can get the versions I'm looking for? Maybe someone who has already bought them, either online or from a LGS? BGG lists the promos (well, most of them) for sale, but only in their original versions.

BTW, I hope I didn't come across as ungrateful. I really appreciated your reply, but it just wasn't exactly what I was looking for.  :)

I can verify that I have purchased the 2nd editions of Hinterlands and Prosperity from Amazon, which arrived earlier today. They both say "(or the 1st edition of Intrigue)" on the back of the box, which is the giveaway.

Also the Prosperity set has the nice new Platinum and Colonies.

Where in the wiki did you find this information? I just found out that Prosperity is in 2nd edition. I maintain complete rules document on BGG, so I want to know which sets are out in 2nd editions.

Currently Prosperity and Hinterlands are 2E (and Dominion and Intrigue and the Big Box).

Seaside should be coming any day, Dark Ages in a few months.

I was too impatient and bought Dark Ages last week. Can't wait to arrive :) (only Guild and my collection will be full)
Someone told me that in 2018 a new expansion will be released... Is that true? :)

Hi Donald! Speaking of Seaside, I've noticed that it's just come back in-stock at Amazon (link). Hate to ask it, but do you by any chance know whether or not the copies sold by Amazon directly is the reprint? (There's another seller who states they have the reprint, however they only ship within the US)
I'm somewhat hesitant to jump on it is all, as a few Australian shops recently got some more stock in, in the last few days - however all those copies were the original version!

Any insight on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Can't wait to grab Seaside, as well as maybe (read: probably! ;D ) Hinterlands

I have no special way to tell what Amazon is selling. I do know though that the second edition of Seaside is out, it has been shipped to distributors.

Good to hear!  Could you possibly send along scans of the cards that I can put up on the wiki?

One day, all the scans will be bad!

I can but it will be ~a week as I haven't received my copies yet.

Wow, that was a fast response - were your ears burning from sensing your name being said, when I made my post? ;D
And alright then, thanks for the update. I think I might take the plunge today or tomorrow anyway, since Amazon is normally pretty good with having current stock available (and they were previously out-of-stock until a couple of days ago, so hopefully they don't have any old copies leftover) from what I've seen.

So, what are the actual changes with Seaside's cards, anyway? I know the phrasing is being updated to be clearer and also gender-neutral, but are there any major changes to the cards (like with the artwork on platinum+colonies in Prosperity) in Seaside, or?

Also, let me just be the millionth person to congratulate you on making such a great game! Since when I was first shown it by a friend I wasn't convinced about how good a purely card-based game (that looked kinda like moneysink games such as MTG) would be, but after giving it a go, it was highly engaging. Best card game I've played, and undoubtedly one of the best tabletop games I've played, overall!

Thanks; none of the other expansions have new cards, and Prosperity / Platinum are the only other cards with non-text-box layout changes (Potion will stay the same). Aside from better phrasings and bigger fonts and things, Outpost is functionally different in exotic circumstances.

You never notice the coincidences that don't happen! I randomly refresh the forums from time to time, and sometimes that will turn out to be right after someone asked me a question.

Will there ever be any way of buying just those cards (Outpost, Throne Room, Possession, Envoy, Stash etc) that have had functional changes or corrections made to them since the 1st editions (as opposed to cards that have had their wording changed but have remained functionally the same)?  When we play ftf we like to use the current rules, but that means that we have to remember which cards have changed and how.  I don't suppose a box set of corrected cards is something that one would want to sell through normal channels, but I suspect it's something that many existing Dominion players would like to buy.

We have no plans to put out such a product, and it seems impossible that there will ever be sufficient demand.

It would be great if people didn't resent this, if we weren't forced to not make good changes that make the game better, due to people being mad unless we also put out a horrible product consisting of the cards with very minor changes. In general the potential for people to be mad in these situations stops the game from being improved; it's strictly a force for evil.

And if it hadn't been for this force, if there had been no concern over people being mad at us for not letting them buy a special set of things like almost identical Moneylenders, then I'm sure I would have changed more, and the game would be even better as a result. So, it's a bummer, but what can you do, human nature.

I am new to Dominion having just purchased the Big Box Base and Intrigue and Prosperity.  As I understand things Hinterlands and Seaside are now 2nd Ed.  with Dark Ages to come in a few months.

My question is do Empires and Adventures (since these are newer) have the cleaned up and bigger text that the 2nd Ed. have?
My understanding is that Alchemy, Guilds and Cornucopia are still 1st Ed. and do not have the bigger, better text.  Is all of this correct?

Thanks, Kevin

Empires was always 2E. Adventures is out but any given store might have the old version still (check the back of the box, if it mentions "first edition of Intrigue" then it's the new edition). Alchemy and Guilds/Cornucopia have not been updated.

Thanks for the quick response.  I will be picking up the 2nd Eds. Getting too old for smaller text.

When did Adventures 2nd edition come out?

Edit: The rulebook is not on Rio Grande's page yet.
Edit2: Nor the Seaside rulebook.

A month ago, though it only goes out as distributors ask for it.

I will remind Jay about those rulebooks.

Where in the wiki did you find this information? I just found out that Prosperity is in 2nd edition. I maintain complete rules document on BGG, so I want to know which sets are out in 2nd editions.

I see that you are Norwegian like me (although I live in Mexico now). :) I'm not a completist like you, although I'm somewhat jealous. It would be nice to have new editions of all the cards, especially Outpost, Masquerade etc. I only bought the base game 2nd edition, and the Intrigue update pack.

I was just in Norway and organized the Dominion Norwegian championships (at Arcon). The last time I organized it, 4 years ago, there were 30 participants, but this year it was sadly only 9. (Maybe because of a huge number of competing events and/or a later time slot...) I guess you couldn't make it? Maybe you're not in Oslo.

We met briefly, actually! I was the guy with that big suitcase containing the complete Dominion collection in Vennerød's room. I couldn't join the tournament, as I was there with my three sons, and the timing of the qualifying event wasn't exactly ideal for small children. I'd love to join next time, though.

The information was found on the 'Second edition' page of the wiki. Now, it says that both Seaside and Adventures are 2e (along with Dominion, Intrigue, Prosperity and Hinterlands), so after the announced Dark Ages update, only the three small expansions, Base Cards and the promo cards will 'need' an update. I hope we'll see an updated Base Cards product as well? If not, I'll have to buy yet another base set (sigh)...

About the promo cards: The wiki stated that these were updated, but when I couldn't find any updated versions on BGG, I contacted RGG. They confirmed that no promos had yet been updated, and that they may never be updated. I updated the wiki, but now the 'Second edition' page says that there have been proofs of 2e promos. Can anyone in the know explain this?

Someday there will be an updated Base Cards.

The promos were printed in updated forms. I have them all, and scanned them for the wiki. I certainly expect they will go out at some point if they haven't yet.

Ah, these are so good news! Thanks a lot for sharing! I checked BGG as lately as yesterday, and only the original versions are available at the moment, so we'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

I'm really looking forward to news on Nocturne! Is it expected to be released at Spiel in Essen? You may not be able to answer this, and if so, sorry for asking.

Thanks a lot for making the best game in the world!

We met briefly, actually! I was the guy with that big suitcase containing the complete Dominion collection in Vennerød's room. I couldn't join the tournament, as I was there with my three sons, and the timing of the qualifying event wasn't exactly ideal for small children. I'd love to join next time, though.

Ah, it was you!
Next year I probably will not be in Norway at that time.

Regarding the promos: I ordered Envoy and Prince from BGG in May, and was happy to discover that I got the 2nd edition Envoy.

I'll talk to Knut. Maybe I can arrange it next year in your absence?

Good to know about the Envoy! I'll send BGG a message and ask them to update their pictures in the store, so that I'll be able to buy the ones that are updated. I guess they just used the same pictures when they got new ones in.

I'm sure it's just down to when supplies run out, though if they think they're out and then find some more they could switch back.

At BGG they understand that people care about this stuff, but I think if you ask them to update the image the best you will get is them immediately updating it though they're still sending out some old ones. I would not expect them to time it. Or for that matter to drop the old image when adding the new one, I mean why not have that record.

English copies probably won't be at Essen but we don't know for sure yet, it's down to when it gets printed and whatever entities that bring stuff to Essen on planes. It will not be out in German this year.

The Recommended Kingdom Gummed Up (Seaside & Alchemy) is missing two cards, from Seaside, it seems.  There are only 8 cards here.

Thanks, my mistake. And then we didn't catch it because you start reading recommended kingdoms and your eyes glaze over.

I couldn't find a file with all the sets of 10 other than the rulebook itself, and they aren't in the rulebook. It's possible I just never picked them out. I told Jay to add Smugglers and Haven.

Is the version of Dark Ages sold on Amazon right now 2nd ed? I noticed that it's been out of stock for a while and suddenly returned.

The new edition of Dark Ages has been sent to distributors, but I have no way of knowing for sure what you'll get if you buy it somewhere without checking the back of the box.

I went through the new Dark Ages rulebook, and I'm sorry to report that one mistake has not been fixed. Under Hermit, it says:

If Hermit is not discarded from play during Clean-up - for example, if you put it on your deck with Scheme (from Hinterlands) - then the ability that trashes it will not trigger.

Actually it's discarded in any case. Then you can Scheme it and not trash it (lose-track) and gain a Madman.

Just received Dark Ages from Amazon and it is Second Edition. It refers to first edition of Intrigue on the back. Hopefully they don't sneak out any first editions they may have laying around.

I notice the new Dame Anna says "You may trash up to 2 cards from your hand." Is this a mistake or was it left for clarity?

I like the "may" for added clarity, even though it's redundant. I've seen people ask before if "up to" includes 0. But I'm surprised Chapel didn't get that same wording in 2nd edition.

Well, that's my main problem: it's inconsistent. It just makes Chapel more confusing even if Dame Anna is less confusing.

I think I suggested it. And it's purposefully inconsistent. You often play Dame Anna without wanting to trash your cards, so the question comes up constantly. You very rarely play a Chapel to trash zero cards.

I seem to remember the question coming up with Chapel more than once... but it was most often from people just curious about the rules rather than people who were in a situation where they wanted to play Chapel without trashing cards.

I agree that it's good on Dame Anna, but would also have been welcome on Chapel. I just recently played a game IRL with a newbie who didn't realize he could play the Chapel just to increase the value of Horn of Plenty.

Hmm. I must be strange. I've many times played a Chapel to cost-reduce Peddler. I've also Princed a Chapel to good effect in a Mountebank game.

I've also owned Chapels in a game with Herald, though I don't recall if I was ever forced to play Chapel then chose not to trash anything.

It seems to crop up surprisingly often.

I think by "you", he meant the average new payer who isn't going to be doing any of the things you just mentioned. And by "rarely" he meant in comparison to how often you would want to play a Knight just for the attack. You "very rarely" want to buy Curses or Coppers, but most of the people on this forum have played numerous games where we have done so.

I've played Chapel to trash nothing way more often than I've bought a Curse.

Admittedly, that's because I've only played Defiled Shrine once, and my normal policy is to let someone else lose tempo by buying the first Curse in an Ambassador game. (-8

I think "up to 4" Pretty clearly includes 0,1,2,3,4. I thought that from day one of playing dominion. (Although admittedly it really didn't ever matter to me until I'd already played lots of dominion)
It might as well say "Trash fewer than 5 cards"

Chose one: Trash 0 cards from your hand; or trash 1 card from your hand; or trash 2 cards from your hand; or trash 3 cards from your hand; or trash 4 cards from your hand.

But while I agree that "up to" should clearly include 0; that doesn't stop other people from being confused. "Play an action card from your hand twice" clearly means... "play an action card from your hand twice", yet people still get confused and ask what happens if Throne Room a Throne Room.

The layout isn't done for Guilds/Cornucopia, so it's months away. Nothing has even been started for Alchemy.

Just to be certain: I think you’ve stated that the Potions won’t be changed for 2e, because they won’t need a numerical value printed on them like the other basic cards. I also believe you said that the Base Cards set will be updated (after all other sets have been 2e-ed, iIrc).

Does this mean that there’s only plans for reprinting Potions in a 2e Base Cards set, and that we may never see a 2e Alchemy, or were you specifically talking about online, when you talked about Potion not getting a change? I’m just worried that once all sets have been updated to the 2e standard, Alchemy is no longer a part of the ‘official’ card pool. But then again, I guess it wouldn’t make any sense to include Potions in the new Base Cards set, if that was the case.

I’d like to get my hands on the ‘art’ Potions again (my old copy of Base Cards has been sold to my gaming group at work, because mixing the Base Cards and 2e basic cards bugs me a bit, because of the slightly different design). Do I need to buy another 1e Base Cards set to get back those nice-looking Potions? If I just have to wait for a year or two, I can live with that, but if the plan is not to reprint Alchemy at all, it would be good to know.

2E in the sense of new cards, only Dominion and Intrigue got that. 2E in the sense of improved layout etc., all sets are getting that. Alchemy will be last. This was just based on the order that things ran out of stock.

Potion will be updated for the new Base Cards (and then Alchemy, I believe Base Cards will come first), but I expect it will just have better centering and that's it. We intentionally are keeping the image the same.

What a relief! Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I knew that only the layout/text will be changed for the sets other than Dominion and Intrigue, so this was more about the Potion cards and the continuity in design and language across all sets than anything else. Glad to hear that I’ll get the ‘art’ Potions back in my collection eventually!  8)

Where can we keep up on news for the new Base Cards?

In other words, you or RGG won't forget or neglect to announce it. Thanks!
