Scrying Pool is also a good edge case.

Still has the problem of rats hitting vineyards unless you can pseudo-trash which is tricky to execute.

The worst thing is, the game this relates to, there was a minor trasher available, Sauna.  A card that normally you have to fight over.  I had to buy all five to get down to Avanto.

Buying two Saunas instead of Rats would have taken care of all his trashing needs.

I had a board against our dear Lord Rat a while back, where the obelisk card was Rats, and, where, I believe, with just a little tweaking getting all the Rats would probably lead to a win. It didn´t need the tweaking to be the winning strategy against our dear Lord Rat though...  :P

If he had bought any of the Saunas. Kirian got all 5.

I have occasionally gained a rats when I had enough draw but was swimming in curses with no other way to trash them.

Another use case is getting one from the Black Market as a cantrip trasher.

Not just that, also check what kind of other trashing is available. If there's only bad trashing, it may still cost too much time to get rid of the rats when they are beyond their usefulness. If there's Chapel, it's probably better to skip the rats altogether. It's when there's good but not great trashing that the Rats have a chance to shine. I still have to consciously refrain myself from going for Rats if the other trashing is too weak.

Fortress might help a bit

That doesn't help much with vineyards but its another edge case where you want rats without trashing. If you do engine mirror and piles are low then when you play your deck one rat with fortress in hand will empty entire rats pile. Similar trick with virtual coin where you trash everything to empty pile but could buy victory card. These tricks are best done with workshop variant.

Oh the edge cases are legion:

1. Trashing curses for the VP gain (maybe up to +10 VP if your opponent pulled Amb out of the Bm deck). On a similar note going after Silver & Gold with Bandit fort out or singletons with Wolf den is quite viable (e.g. a late game Rats to burn a prize like Followers can be a slightly cheaper Duchy.
2. Converting card types - Pool, Cityq, Lib, Grobber, etc. can often work better with dead Rats than dead Coppers/Estates.
3. Gaining a unique(ish) named card. A dead Rats can absolutely be worth it (e.g. other getting 8 VP Fairgrounds with Potion and Bane) other cards that care about diversity (like Menage) can benefit from converting a few coppers into something less likely to collide.
4. Gaining Knight or other opponent trashing defense. E.g Alchemist x5 -> Rats (trash C, gain Rats) -> Courtyard (draw Rats/topdeck Rats).
5. Improving Crace odds (e.g. Kc/Crace/Rats; vastly better to have something other than copper to show)
6. Milking landmarks. Defiled shrine, Tomb,  and a few others make it viable to grab Rats without a way to trash them.

In general, trashing Rats does not net you any draw over a straight trasher, Chap for instance will draw a card, but you could use Rats ... or just trash things directly with the Chap.

Also it takes two Rats to pile out the Rats pile. The +1 card comes before the gain. You can also skip the Fortress if your hand/deck are empty (e.g. you duration/mat away your green or have it in play).
