Any interest in local live tournaments/leagues? (updated 2/15)

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but here seems as good a place as any. Like most of you, I play Dominion primarily on Isotropic, but (and I may actually be in the minority here) I greatly prefer playing live. I have a small group that I play with occasionally, but they are mostly casual players who are up for it infrequently.

Because of this, I've been thinking about setting up some kind of Dominion league in my area. I live near Seattle and recently discovered an excellent card store/cafe that rents out large private rooms in advance for card game tournaments, at a fee that is waived if the group tab hits a certain reasonable number. They also freely loan out copies of various games to patrons, including Dominion and all its expansions. I'm sure other major cities have similar hot spots that would be perfect places for a tournament or live league, if there was any interest.

So my question is: would there be? Obviously this community is spread all over the place, and trying to organize a tournament in any one city could just not work, but it's also very large and still growing. I'm just surprised the idea hasn't really been discussed before, and I'm curious if there's any potential there.

So let's use this thread as a way to gauge interest, wherever you are - list your location and your level of interest in this, and I'll edit this post with a breakdown by city, and we can see if it's something worth pursuing. At worst it can be a nice little index in case there's ever a need for one in the future.

EDIT (2/15): Okay, so everyone seems pretty spread out, but I am still happy to use this thread as a running directory of interested players. I'll continue to update the list every time the thread grows by a couple pages or so. So if you're interested, please still reply - we have plenty of time. If I got any locations wrong for some reason, or missed anyone, please let me know.

There are a collection of boardgamers at Microsoft that you might be able to convince to play in a Dominion tournament.

I'm in Lebanon, NH at the moment.  Have had a lot of trouble finding Dominion buddies here.  I also prefer playing the real game.

I used to live in Hanover and there was a pretty solid board-gaming community among the science grad students at Dartmouth and their friends and associates.

As for me, I'm in the Bay Area and would definitely be up for something.

I live in Sweden, and as of a few weeks ago, we have a league in Stockholm. Which is really awesome, and I recommend every area out there try.

Also, I prefer playing live.

Yeah it's a cool initiative. I was there playing last week (met Lekkit!) and had a good time. I also quite enjoyed being looked at as some kind of god and/or rockstar by a few people there who knew my reputation (presumably from Lekkit telling them) :)

That said, while it was fun to play some live Dominion (something I've only done with a handful of friends before), 4 player Base only Dominion sure is boring when you're used to 2p random cards! In my opinion, of course.

I didn't tell many people about you. Most of the ones who knew you were good are all isotropic players or really found out that you could play the game well. Also, you chilled with Görling who ended up t4 in our nationals, so there was bound to be some skill.

4 player Dominion is not that bad, actually. It's a different game from 2 player. It's base only that ruins it for me. Right now I don't feel like playing base only ever again.

Well the comment that really cracked me up was your girlfriend asking "you are *Fabian* Fabian, right?" :) That made the evening totally worth it. Plus a few funny whispers like "did you hear there's a *really* good player here tonight?" while walking around the room. Fun stuff.

I'm sure 4p can be fun, and I definitely agree it's base only that sucks the joy out of playing.

Bay Area... is that San Fran or another Bay Area?  I'll be up there for GDC in March and Fanime in May so if anything happens let me know!

I'm in San Diego and head up to LA frequently on weekends.  If anyone else is in the area maybe we can get some kind of event together!

There are a few gaming shops, but the groups I've attended have seemed fairly... close-knit, I guess.

Sadly I'm not a student (wife's in med school) so I don't go on the campus or really know any students aside from the med students, who are generally too busy to do anything!  I'd probably go crazy up here without the internet.

I have been to Carnage and a more recent gaming event here, which were both very nice, but yeah, board gaming's been sporadic.  I believe the organizer of the latter event said he wanted to do another in March, which gives me more hope I can find other players over the year.

I played in (OK, fine, I won) the Dominion tournament at Carnage (very casual, granted) which was also Base only.  I'm not sure why people limit themselves to it, as I have to agree with Lekkit, etc that it's just incredibly repetitive and vanilla after being exposed to expansions.  When I first started playing I had access to everything up to Cornucopia, and I don't think it was too complex just jumping in; it could just be an issue of people not wanting to pay for the expansions?  Maybe I caught on faster from playing Yu-Gi-Oh and such.

I'm in Vancouver, and would be interested in local competitive play, probably not all the time, but definitely for local tournaments and possibly league play.

For those near SE Michigan, there is already a tournament held at Penguicon (late April/early May) each year, and likely there will be a tournament at U-Con (late October) next year.  There is no tournament but tons of gaming at ConFusion (January).

If you're interested in gaming in this area, I can hook you up with groups in Ann Arbor, Toledo, Detroit/Ferndale, and (IIRC) Canton.  The first two are very open to new people, though Dominion isn't usually on the menu all the time.

If only the two of us are interested we could have a 1 round 2 player tournament for the title of Vancouver Dominion Champion. :p

I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and I doubt there's anyone else on here who's anywhere near me. Also, I prefer playing live, and got into Iso when I couldn't get anyone to play with me.

*cough*

Although the word "Midwest" is tough to define... you might well be a day's drive away and still be in the Midwest.

I would be interested in anything in the London/Essex/Hertfordshire area.

I guess that's one area where the traditional CCG games have the advantage over games like Dominion.  They make more money so can afford to support and even organise the local tournament scenes.
