let's discuss guilds cards: baker

:c

it makes sense. this card is a decent supplement to pretty much anything that isn't terminal draw bm, it makes things more consistent (both the top half and the bottom half) and i think it generally shines when there aren't any +buys. rarely do you want more than, like, 3 or 4 of them; if baker seems to be good to buy in bulk, you might just want to consider golds.
one might say baker is doomed to be a generally unexciting card.
that's fine; when everything is exciting, it starts to get unexciting (see also: fox dittos)

-is there an exciting baker game? can it be accomplished with less than king's court?
-how often do you tend to use the coin token in the opening?

I hate this card so much because I tend to notice weaker players massively overrating it (buying it before drawing deck, buying it on the opening with the coin token, buying it over gold for payload when the latter is very obviously better) and as a result I overcorrect and almost never buy it myself, which has cost me no small number of games.

This card is really overrated.

The best part of this card is its name and how it fits with the three men in the tub nursery ryhmm.

Yeah, it's not great, but coin tokens are nice, and it IS a cantrip. Basically an expensive Peddler, but hey.

If nothing else, Baker enables the 3/5 split, or 2/6 split  8)

Baker is decent enough. If you're using most of the tokens every turn it's an awfully expensive form of economy. The first two are always pretty great though.

Opening with it is pretty rare. Maybe paired with Chapel or something, where you aren't really buying stuff anyway, but usually not great.

It gets a bad rap as a reaction to how overrated it is among new players.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite cards, pretty much entirely because of how it can shake up the first two turns.

If you're drawing your deck, Baker is strictly better than Treasury. And quite often, the buy from Market doesn't matter (it matters plenty, but not every turn or even every game). Similarly, oftentimes Highway is in no way better than a Peddler. Point being that Peddlers are a thing, and they aren't that bad.

Peddlers [....] aren't that bad.

Sure they aren't bad, but on most boards, something else is more important (trasher, drawer, junker, gainer, attacks, cost reducer ... ), especially at .

I've found it very helpful in a couple attack heavy games where we both got tons of junk in our deck with no trashing.  The coin tokens were a great way to actually get up to 5+ eventually. As with all of the other cards, it definitely has its moments

Gold is often bad. The difference between hitting $6 this turn and $4 the next turn vs. being able to buy two power-$5 cards can be significant in the building phase. That's where I find coin tokens to be the most useful, but it also underscores the fact that several Bakers may be overkill.

Baker also serves an important role when I'm explaining Dominion strategy in that you should not underestimate the importance of +card. Baker is $5, Candlestick maker is $2. That tiny +1 card is worth $3 more, and even then, CM needed a +buy boost to make it relevant. Then I point to the treasure piles and ask: And what are those poisonous yellow cards missing? I swear I'm going to start keeping a flyswatter under the table for when people keep reaching for the Gold pile just because they've hit $6.

I love how its a cantrip so they are really easy to stack and then you have a lot of coin tokens because you stacked them.

Also, the card now gives you +1 Coffers instead of +1 Coin Token, and comes with a mat  ;D

If you're drawing your deck, there's no particular reason to have Baker. Well, except as an expensive Peddler, if that's what you need.

Where I've found Baker really useful is in getting the spikes I need around T5-8. If I want an early Province for Tournament, or I want an Inheritance, a few coin tokens make me a lot more confident.

Trouble is, Baker costs $5, whereas Candlestick Maker is a $2 which is almost as good for that purpose.

The primary reason I'd go for baker specifically (there are, as others have noted, sometimes reasons to get any Peddler-type card even at $5) is if butcher is also on the board. Butcher goes from a very good $5 to maybe the best $5 if Baker is also available.

Or the 4/4 split. Yesterday I opened Quarry/Quarry on a board with Baker, Stonemason and KC. Totally worth it.

Candlestick maker only costs two because it is not a cantrip and cantrips are a lot easier to stack.

Exactly. The difference between a cantrip and a non-terminal stop card is uuuuuuuge.
