What does everyone think is the strongest Treasure Card?

With all the cool Action cards, its often easy to forget about Treasures. But I think Empires shifts this balance somewhat, and Treasures are once again an important part of our games. The million-dollar question is: What is the strongest Treasure Card?

I made a thread like this when I just started on the forums. Wow, this brings back some awesome memories!

Fortune?

Well, it's really expensive and can't be stacked, so I don't think so.

Well then it depends on your interpretation of 'strongest', doesn't it?

By strongest I mean best value for money, i.e. strongest effect for it's price. Platinum is the 2nd most expensive treasure, but I don't think it is the 2nd best.

It's still Fortune. Doubling your money is so good it doesn't need to be stacked.

Depends how much money you have. It is one of the few treasures that can be worth

This is a line of reasoning that will lead to you being a worse player. King's Court is also useless in some games, but that doesn't mean it isn't one of the most powerful cards in the game.

In all honesty though there is a serious argument to be made for horn of plenty over fortune, especially with the reduction of bad cards in the second editions.

Nah, that was a joke. I mean, even Fool's Gold is better than Silver.

Fortune is possibly a top 10 card in all of Dominion just based on the strength of its effect. The cost might as well be $8/4D, since you get double money next turn in an engine, and $12 is nothing for a nonterminal card that's giving you at least $8 and a buy.

I will not be surprised in the least if Fortune knocks King's Court out of the top spot for + cards this year.  Then again, I also wouldn't be surprised if it didn't, given how much this forum tends to underrate new cards in the Qvist rankings.  But honestly, it should come down to Fortune vs. Donate for, not just best + card, but best card in general.

I voted Copper. It's free money! It's literally you paying $0 for $1. It's the best deal in Dominion by far.

Fortune is the best card 90-93% of the time.

I'm not super familiar with Fortune yet so I voted for Loan because it's clearly the strongest out of the rest.

I was merely bringing to attention the fact that Fortune is worth nothing without other treasure. Like King's Court, it is weak without the right supporting cards. In Fortune's case, you need to have a lot of to take advantage of it's ability. For example, if you have , Fortune is basically a non-terminal Wine Merchant. Without at least - already, I think it isn't that great.

Fortune is definitely in the top 5 Treasure Cards, possibly in the top 5 Cards overall.

... if Fortune costs $8, doesn't it stand to reason that when you buy Fortune, your deck can somewhat consistently produce at least $8? It basically is, at a minimum, an extra Province a turn for a deck drawing engine.

Sometimes, but often with a strong, expensive card on the board, you use stuff like Death Cart to spike whatever you need to buy it. Don't forget the . As is often the case with expensive cards, you need to decide if you want them over Province/Colony. Basically, the more expensive the card, the smaller the window of opportunity for it's use.

For example, if you can consistently hit with 1 Buy in a two-player game (not a rare situation), then buying Fortune slows your deck down by 2 turns. Assuming you are both getting a province a turn (as often happens in single-buy kingdoms), you need to CAPITALize on Fortune twice in order to offset the cost of buying it in the first place.

If you can hit over often far before your opponent, you will probably win already.

It's not quite "two turns" of slowdown, because you get to use Fortune's ability to generate the coin you use to pay off the debt. So if your deck produces exactly $8 before Fortune, it does exactly $22 after Fortune (assuming you had 1 Gladiator - don't forget free Gold!). Minus the 8 debt and you're down to $14. So already you're *almost* to where you would have been at if you got a Province instead. So yeah, skip Fortune if there are 3 Provinces left, of course.
