WorkShop/Throne Room/Gardens

Hey guys, this is my first post on the forums.

I just got into Dominion Online heavily in the last two months. Because I'm a cheapskate, about half my games are Base set only.

I'm always excited to gardens rush. This game came together particularly well: https://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20161201/log.0.1480570686083.txt

Seemed like my opponent didn't know what a rush was.

I'm curious, has anyone run numbers/tested any bot scripts, to optimize gardens strategies in the base set?

Hi and welcome to the forums.
If you are interested in joining in a competition I would recommend the league.
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=60.0

Workshop gardens in a mirror(both people doing the same thing) the best way to do it is get two workshops and after that go gardens when you can.

When not mirrored you want to get gardens after you have 9 workshops.
Granted your opponent can deny gardens.

In a mirror throne room won't come into play until after the gardens are gone because at 4$ it competes with gardens.
In a non-mirror I would expect you to get throne rooms over workshop when you have >1 workshop for every 5 cards in your deck.

I don't follow.

In a non mirror, you recommend getting 9 workshops, then all the gardens, then throneroom?

At that point its faster to hit the estates. If you grab a few thronerooms early, your workshopping will be more efficient. After the gardens, the deck is too dilute for throne room.

The advice he gave was independent of Throne Room.

I don't want to say you should skip Throne Room since the benefit is potentially really high, but the risks of Throne not colliding with Workshop are fairly high, and it's another non-Gardens $4 cost to gain. I think you would only want Throne Room after like four Workshops, and not many of them (don't pile them). In the mirror every Throne Room is a card that isn't Gardens, and in the non mirror it doesn't speed up the rush.

I disagree, in a non-mirror, it seems rare that TR would not collide with WS, unless you buy TR really early, or late when you have a lot of green (Gardens and Estates) by which time you can expect to have gotten a few TR/WS plays in.  In this game:  http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20161126/log.0.1480186613370.txt
I do something very similar and never fail to collide TR ans WS (though getting the turn 5 collision was maybe a bit lucky).  In any case I got in a few plays of TR/WS and won easily.

Gaining 1 more card is better than gaining Duchy?
I prefer buying Silvers instead of Throne Rooms.

In a non-mirror, stopping draining your target three piles to get Throne Room requires you to use it at least twice in order for it to not take longer to end the game, and three times for it to speed the end game up. You shuffle surprisingly few times in a Gardens game, so the window to get Throne Rooms is basically just the second shuffle, when you might only have 2-3 Workshops if you skip a Workshop gain or two to get Throne Room. You aren't always certain it is a non mirror at that point, either, in which case not getting Gardens will cost you.

Of course. This is a rush strategy. You want to pile out ASAP. If you're buying a Duchy at any point during a Gardens rush, it was probably a mistake.

EDIT: This is assuming non-mirror. In a mirror, buying Duchy may be good, but I think more pile control is still better.

I do admire your opponent's strategy of opening with Chapel and then never trashing any cards with it.

The workshop/gardens rush has two goals. The first is to get points, the second is to empty three piles, typically gardens, then estates, then workshops.

In the mirror, the piles empty quickly, so you can go for gardens after around 3 workshops and going for estates afterward.

Against a province deck, the game will go longer and the workshop pile is harder to empty, so it's often correct to pick up around 5 workshops before attacking the gardens pile.

In certain situations, it's correct to pick up a couple of Silver, Duchies, or Throne Rooms, but generally you want to focus on draining the Workshop/Gardens/Estate piles.

It's also worth noting that the presence of workshop and gardens on a board doesn't mean that it's the best strategy on the board. For example, there's a strong chapel/laboratory/throne room deck on the board posted above:

If it's clear in the opening that it will be a mirror, TR is a mistake, against a province deck, it gets a lot better.
