Mafia games, meta and having fun
« on: November 23, 2016, 04:19:12 am »

so, I ran into some strange realisation.

I tried to play a Mafia game on a different site and understood the thing that is not so good. I can't play well while i don't know people i play with at all. And it's not about obvious reasons that i can't read them (of course i can't) but about something completely different.

First, I can't make any reads/longposts/voting explanations. My posts are short, without much insight and I try hard but just can't get into the game and see why a person have made things they've made. I look like complete lurker there. Yes, that can be explained by that this is my first game there and afterwwards it will be better, but I remember that my first game here was on that level only D1, then I was capable of doing good cases/reads.
Second, I don't have any fun for some reason! It feels hard to get into there and I don't think i will play any more games on that site but I literally don't see any reason for it. Yeah, people are a little ruder there and not so welcoming and stuff and stuff, but i feel like i am not playing but doing some hard not-so-clear job I'm not enough paid for and I can't understand why is that.

Obviously I love Mafia games here on f.ds cause i know metas of people, styles of games, there is not much offensive situations etc. but the real question is: why is this stopping me from playing in different circumstances?

Do you feel what i'm talking about? Have you tried different communities to play? What's the problem? :)

Do you feel what i'm talking about?

Yes. My experience was pretty much what you describe here on two of the three other sites I tried playing on. Most of all this:

Quote
It feels hard to get into there

is very true. Every post feels like a struggle.

The third one was the championship game, where it was such a big thing and I had to spend so much time that it sort of mitigated the problem because I inevitably got familiar with all players. But usually I don't dedicate 5+ hours a day to mafia, so I probably won't play on other sites again in the foreseeable future.

Also you were the scum there if i'm right, that seems to help too.

Yes, and much more struggle to post, because as scum you kinda have kinda plan and yeah, it's stressful, but you have a point and you know what to write.

You probably aren't allowed to tell us your alignment if the game is still ongoing.

Fair point. Deleted.

I play Town of Salem, which is somewhat similar to mafia, but the days and night are much, much shorter. In Town of Salem, everyone is a PR and you play with different people each game. It's been fun and easy to get into for me, but I'd never consider playing forum mafia anywhere else.

I've started playing that too.
It's fun, but the problem is some people on there are asses.
And you play different people every game, everyone uses different names every game, so it's hard to basically know anything meta wise

Town of Salem is like playing mafia at parties: Random, silly and not satisfying in the least.

I like a change of pace every once and a while, but I definitely see why people here would hate Town of Salem.

As long as I don't try to think of Town of Salem as Mafia I enjoy it. As soon as I think of it as Mafia, I hate the lack of daytime lynching.

Sorry for the necro, but I felt this topic was a good place to put this. I stopped playing for a few months because I felt like I was making the game less fun for people. In particular, I felt like I was very bad to have as a town teammate. When I first started playing Dominion, it took me a while to start winning consistently, but that was OK because the people I was playing with were having fun. I'm just worried that having me as town would be considered an auto-loss for town.

However, if people don't care about that, I'll keep playing and just try to get better at the game as I go.

For playing with people I don't know well, Resistance is a better game (Avalon version is best), because it actually creates real information for people to argue about.

The only people I struggle to play with are lurkers. I don't have any issues with anybody at all, though. I'm always happy to see people signed up to play because without you I don't get to play.

You were doing fine, and anyway, it's fine, as long as you actually want to play and can meet minimal posting requirements.
