Four years passed since the first Dominion Card Lists were compiled, the skill level of all players raised and a lot of new knowledge is gained. Again a new expansion was released and everyone is eager to learn how the new cards rank. That means it's time for the 2016 edition of the Dominion Card Lists.

What do you have to do?
This time there are 3 lists due to popular demand. If you like to contribute, go to http://www.qvist.de/dommesh for the best cards list, http://www.qvist.de/dommesh_fav for your favourite cards and http://www.qvist.de/dommesh_art for the best card art.
This video walks you basically through how the web app works or just read on:


I'm not the best web designer to make it look nice, but it works. You have 3 options to submit your list. You can 1.) compare two cards at a time or 2.) order the cards all at once in a big list or 3.) rate them with numerical values. If you do the first option, the app will tell you when you're done and no new "card duel" is available anymore. Internally option 1 and 2 is stored in one list and option 3 in a separate list. There are 2 links for exporting one list to another, so you can for example first give each card a numerical value for a rough estimate and then copy the list and fine tune it by either ordering them or do the remaining comparisms. I didn't include a registration or anything like that for this simple app. You can just login by your Making Fun name and any password you like. The next time you login you just have to remember the password you've set on your first login. I expect that nobody will trick me by using a user name of anyone else. If you have no Making Fun account, just use a user name of your choice. I will also still accept PMs if you still want to do that in the old fashioned way. If you send me a PM please be sure that you put each card in order and don't miss any. If you don't know an expansion very well you can choose to leave it out. But be sure that if you want to include a card of a specific expansion, you have to rank all cards of the expansion. There are no restriction with Promo cards, so if you don't know e.g. Summon very well, you can leave it out.

Cards are only counted if they are kingdom cards, so no Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Potion, Estate, Duchy, Province, Colony, Curse, Prizes, Shelters, Ruins, Spoils, Madman, Mercenary, individual Knights, Treasure Hunter, Warrior, Hero, Champion, Soldier, Fugitive, Disciple or Teacher are allowed. Regarding Empires: The majority wanted to treat the debt cards like normal coins cost, Castles are in $6+ as the majority costs $6 or more and the rest of the split piles get both cards to rank, so keep that in mind when ranking/rating.
Regarding 2nd Editions: They were just announced, so the new cards aren't available for the first two lists, but you can vote for them in the Art List. The old cards are also still available to rank.
If you submit your list, you also agree that I may give this to third party, like theory or rrenaud. If you don't agree send me a PM.

If you've submitted last year, I will not take your last submission into account.
But if you didn't save your last year's submission and you need it, feel free to PM me and I will send it to you.
Just arrange the cards for your ranking with the best card going first and the worst on the last position.

I included extra lists for Prizes, individual Knights, Ruins, Events and Landmarks. These are optional, you don't have to rank them if you don't want.
You can also if you want rank all the kingdom cards in one big list. This is also optional as this takes a lot of time.
If you want PM me, this list should be subdivided into several lists, containing:
39 $0-$2 cards, 49 $3 cards, 73 $4 cards, 96 $5 cards, 32 $6+ cards, 10 Potion cards = 299

Usual disclaimer: This list should cause discussion not hassle. Of course it's difficult to compare some of the cards because pretty much every card has some situations where it shines and situations where it doesn't. This isn't a scientific list, just a compiled list of the community's opinion of the best cards.

Each card will get a percentage value based on the rank. So your best card gets 100% and your worst gets 0%. This will result in a compiled list of all of your lists.
When I post the results, I will also include the ususal statistic data. I plan to make videos again for each list, just to give you my thoughts why I think this card landed where it did and some statistics.
If you encounter some bugs, just send me a PM and I'll fix them ASAP.

This is how I am ranking the cards, for those who might want help:

Firstly, I will go to the rating section, and rate the cards there, starting from the $0-$2 section and then onward to all the sections, not forgetting to save before starting each new section. I am using 1-100 in increments of 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, etc). After you save each list, the cards will reorder themselves in the numerical value you assigned, highest first. From there, you can finetune and tweak to ensure some cards are above others, like rating a card 77 instead of 75, for example.

How are you all rating Landmarks?  I ended up ranking them by a) how interesting I thought they were and 2) how much they impacted a given game.  To that end, I ended up putting Wall at #1.

Having not participated in previous years, I'm finding this a fascinating exercise. Is a village-with-benefit "better" than a discard-attack-with-drawback? Is it "better" to get a similar effect from a $4 card or a $3 Event? What about Travelers, which cost $2 plus however many turns it takes to upgrade them? Do I take into account the fact that a card from a split pile always comes with its partner, or that there are only 5 copies of it? Even something like Fool's Gold vs Coin of the Realm is an interesting thing, just because the two cards share a surprising amount in common and yet they fill such different niches. I haven't even come to Landmarks yet.

Yeah, the site saves your progress automatically, but you have to "submit" when you're ready. Two reasons for that:
- Last year several people contacted me not to count their lists because they weren't ready. I couldn't tell from the database itself.
- Now that I included method 3 (rating cards) which is saved in a separate list, I need to know which list you are finally submitting, the compare/order list or the rate list, as you might have used both methods.

Notable placements:

1. Page - Just like last year, I'm voting Page for #1. Chapel is strong, but not without its flaws; it's not great in BM, and in engines you have to be very careful not to overtrash, keeping the delicate balance of your engine intact. Page is always amazing. Even in BM, you can use the treasure gaining from Treasure Hunter and Hero to win. I can't remember ever NOT opening Page, except maybe on boards with uber-combos like CH/TFair or Hermit/Market Square. After a year extra of Adventures, as well as the online implementation, my opinion hasn't changed: Page should be #1.

5. Travelling Fair - Having +Buy on demand without ever having to add it to your deck is seriously underrated. It doesn't just enable engines without other +Buy, it can also just add extra buys whenever you need them. And don't forget the top-decking; no longer shall you be sad about opening 5/2 on an Ambassador board!

6. Raze - It's a non-terminal trasher with a small amount of sifting for $2. That's exactly as awesome as it sounds. I'm not sure how we missed that earlier (me included). (Ratcatcher is so much lower because it's so much slower and it doesn't sift...)

14. Fool's Gold - The days of Fool's Gold reign have passed. Engines are way stronger than back in the Hinterlands era, meaning Fool's Gold is forgettable a pretty high percentage of the time. It's still a pretty good BM card, but I don't feel it deserves a Top 10 spot anymore.

26. Native Village - I get the premise (+2 Actions +half a card), but it's way more awkward than it looks. It's so annoying when you set aside a card you really wanted right now, and you have to wait a shuffle before you see it again. It's just unreliable and not very strong.

27. Secret Chamber - This may just be the melancholy talking, but it doesn't look as bad as it always did, for some reason. I don't know, the reaction sucks, but it's usable as a poor man's Vault in quite a few cases.

31. Scouting Party - Like Pearl Diver, you only want it if you have $2 leftover and nothing better to spend it on. And even then it can backfire if you happen to reveal more than 2 good cards. Garbage.

I want to say two things about your rankings:
1) I rated Peasant higher than Page. Disciple and Teacher are the best ones in any engine. Champion makes all the cards non-terminal, but in the most cases you have one key card.

2) Scouting party is not that garbage. It's strongly better than Pearl Diver for a reason you don't add it to your deck and don't need a +buy. Perfect for big money. sometimes you can even spend 4$ to but two of them and sift and sift. I won many games using this.

1) Disciple and Teacher are very strong indeed, which is why I ranked Peasant #3, which is still pretty high. I don't think they're stronger than Champion as engine enablers. Teacher is even slower than Champion because it's a Reserve, and it's rare that you even have the time to throw down more than two tokens. The +Action token is also way worse than just straight up infinite Actions; there's some compensation because the +Card token is so strong, but I don't think that's enough to put Peasant above Page. At most, Page and Peasant are of similar strength for engines, in which case Page is still the overall better card since Peasant is almost useless in most BM variants. Sure, those are rare with a Traveller on the board, but they do exist (if there's no draw and no cantrips, for example).

2) But how often do you want to spend $2 or even $4 on sifting in BM? In must cases, you don't want to sacrifice a Province buy for a bit of sifting, I'd say. If you do buy Scouting Party, it's only because you have nothing better to buy. And yeah, then it might be useful, it might be slightly better than nothing, and it might even cause you to win when you otherwise wouldn't have. Any card can do that. I have trouble believing that it's common with Scouting Party, though.

I tried to figure that out. I get the same error on the website but copying the database locally and login there it totally works though being slow.
I assume it has something to do with exceeding the execution time or the memory limit, but all the settings seem fine.

I'm not sure, maybe 4th place is slightly too high, but I don't think it's worse than the cards directly below it. The top 3 is very clear and then there's a big gap. What should take 4th place otherwise, Stonemason or Hamlet? I'm not convinced about that either.

The flexibility provided by Courtyard is a pretty big improvement over Moat if you ask me. Also, BM most certainly is a thing, on some boards the engine is just too weak. Those boards have been getting rarer over the past couple of years, but they still exist.

Ratcatcher is probably stronger than raze but you didn't even put them close.

Well, for one thing Ratcatcher is way slower than Raze. The first things you trash with either of them are likely going to be Estates, but Raze can start with that as early as turn 3, whereas Ratcatcher is always at least a turn slower, and it misses the shuffle more often than not. That's never a good thing, but it's especially bad for trashers. Raze has the added bonus of providing a small amount of sifting/cycling - you might see your other opening buy when you otherwise wouldn't have, and you're getting through your junk quicker.

When I first started playing Adventures, I also thought Ratcatcher was stronger than Raze, but now that I've played with them both often enough, I'm pretty sure Raze is way better.

Thanks for the report. This bug was reported last year, but couldn't reproduce it or thought I fixed it, can't remember. So it seems it happens when you click on "don't know". I will look into it.

How are you all rating Landmarks?  I ended up ranking them by a) how interesting I thought they were and 2) how much they impacted a given game.  To that end, I ended up putting Wall at #1.

I rated landmarks by 1) how much they impact games, and 2) how much you "go" for them, putting priority on 1).  There are some, like Colonnade, that you always go for, but doesn't impact games that much.  As for how interesting they are, I feel that should be reserved for the "favorite" card rankings.

I also put Wall at #1, and Keep at #2.

You submit when you are ready with all the cards.
Having two tabs open shouldn't be a problem, especially with separate lists. Not sure what you mean with "getting jumbled". If you do compare mode the order changes quite a lot after each vote, so that's normal.

So I really think that's quite an unpractical way, if you wanna rate all the cards. There might be an algorithm to make this number quite smaller (something like: if card A beats card B and Card B beats card, then card A automatically beats card C) but I[m not sure there is one.

On another note, had quite of a good time rating these yesterday, still haven't reached my final rankings yet though. It[s my first year doing these and I would like to thank Qvist for all your hard work putting these up! ^^

In the art rankings there are 394 different cards and I actually tried doing it by duels yesterday, since I thought it was easier to judge the art that way, but after some 400ish duels and apparently going nowhere, I gave up on it... hehe

So in 'rate mode', we can leave it blank if we don't know the card.  How do we do that in 'order mode'?

And re: ranking Landmarks (although those are actually some of the things I don't want to rank)... My only problem with rating them as "how much they impact the game", or "how much they alter conventional strategy", is that that is just a different thing than being good.  Take a card like Stonemason -- it impacts a lot of games it's in, in that it causes games to end in 3-piles much more often, therefore significantly changing the flow of the game.  But it itself is not very good (in my opinion).  And so should I rank it high or low?  I'd say low.  Same could be said about Landmarks.

Ranking a Landmark just feels like ranking a Province to me.  It's a way to get VP, equally available to all players in all games it's in.

Do you have any idea how many duells there will be, when I do the duells of all cards?

Not exactly, but a lot, I'm pretty sure over 1000.

Actually quite more than that, if you consider there's around 400 cards, that would result in around 80 thousand duels! So I really think that's quite an unpractical way, if you wanna rate all the cards. There might be an algorithm to make this number quite smaller (something like: if card A beats card B and Card B beats card, then card A automatically beats card C) but I[m not sure there is one.

On another note, had quite of a good time rating these yesterday, still haven't reached my final rankings yet though. It[s my first year doing these and I would like to thank Qvist for all your hard work putting these up! ^^

First, it's 300 cards (299 to be exact) and second, yeah the algorithm is already optimized for as few duels as possible. No way it's 80000.

In the art rankings there are 394 different cards and I actually tried doing it by duels yesterday, since I thought it was easier to judge the art that way, but after some 400ish duels and apparently going nowhere, I gave up on it... hehe

You can't directly. I explained it in my video. You can then go to compare mode and delete the cards after ordering them.

If the algorithm is optimized, the average number comparisons is log(N!)/log(2).  Using Stirling's approximation, that's (N ln(N) - N)/ln(2).  For 394 pieces of art, that's about 2800 duels.

The number of clicks required is really quite unfortunate.  It's probably worthwhile to use the rating system first, and then transfer to comparison mode.

  masquerade is busted. draw 2, trash 1 is a force to be reckoned with in and of itself, and the other thing means that your opponent needs to have about 1/4 of the deck be some junk that she can pass. the last 1/4 of junk is a lot less important to get rid of than the first 1/4, but it's still a big deal. again, the thing that effect is sitting on is supergood.
  it's probably the same amount of good as ambassador (or at least it is really hard to know which one is better) but i put masq at the top because it's ~controversial~.
  bureaucrat sucks. its two things are not good individually, and they are also in conflict with each other when you put them on the same card. i don't know where it is within the bottom 20, but it isn't good at all.

Finished the $3 and $4 lists. Notable placements:

1. Fishing Village: The easiest way ever to never have a shortage of extra Actions again, plus it gives as much money as a Silver, only a bit more spread out over turns. Remember when the Silver test was a thing? Silver never passes the Fishing Village test, even in BM. Villages are underrated in general, they are often so crucial for engines, and Fishing Village is easily the strongest one out there, unless you count King's Court maybe. It's a close call, Ambassador is also still as powerful as always, but Fishing Village takes the cake imo.
3. Gear: I think we all learned how strong Gear really is in the past year, even outside TripleGear-BM. It only took 14th place last year, let's get it up where it belongs.
8. Masquerade: I think it's a bit overrated. Draw and trashing in a single card is pretty nice, but it only trashes a single card at a time, which is why I prefer Amulet and Steward to it. It's also a bit awkward later in the game because you can't reliably use it as draw anymore; you don't want to give your opponent good cards, so you're forced to keep Coppers around even if your opponent skips Masquerade.
25. Workshop: It emerged from the depths of the rankings a little bit last year, but it needs to rise even further. Gainers are so important, it's basically +$4 +1 Buy, except you can't use the extra money for an extra expensive card, but in many cases that's perfectly fine.
35. Guide: It's not actually that good. Sure, sometimes you want to skip a hand, but is the opportunity cost of getting a Guide in the first place really worth it? Usually it isn't, unless you happen to have an extra buy/gain around anyway. I'd rather have a trasher or a sifter or Scheme so I don't need Guide in the first place.
42. Loan: It actually gained two places last year, I'm not sure why. Loan sucks. You use it to get rid of Copper, but it's actually a Copper on play itself, so you need to play it twice before your deck is any better than it used to be without it, ASSUMING you don't skip your better Treasures instead. Which is not a good assumption as it happens all the time. Any other trasher is better, even Trade Route. You have to be really desperate before Loan is worth it.

1. Herald: If you ask me, there's no clear-cut all-powerful $4 card. It's probably the most moderate batch of cards, smack in the middle of everything. Might as well go with my personal favorite for #1 then. It's a very good card, maybe not much stronger than the other cards in the top 10, but still. If your deck is anything resembling action dense (i.e. if there's any trashing at all), you might just have yourself a very cheap Lost City.
8. Conspirator: I was surprised it's only #22 in last year's ranking. $2 on a cantrip is a ton of money, even if it's conditional. You have to be a bit careful that you don't overdo it, because drawing a hand of five Conspirators is sad, but otherwise it becomes very powerful very quickly.
10. Ironmonger: Just a bit overrated. It helps you hit $5 early-game, which is cool, but later on it's often just a Village, and sometimes it's not when you really want it to be. It's a good card, but a bit too unreliable for a place in the top 5.
17. Magpie: Yup, I admit it. We all overrated it, I jumped on the bandwagon too. Let's get this thing out of the top 10 this time.
33. Bishop: The sad thing is that you can't open with it without helping your opponent way too much. That means it's only good as payload later in the game. It's still a good card in some engines, but not as spammable as people used to think.
35. Marauder: Seriously? Place 14 for a poor man's Soothsayer last year? It's terminal, it doesn't draw, it slowly gives bad cards to your opponent that aren't nearly as bad as Curses... it's really average. I mean, it can be a good addition to an engine, but it's not that important to go for quickly.
45. Coppersmith: Again, I may be biased due to nostalgia here. I'll freely admit that. Couldn't bear to put it any lower than this though.
64. Rats: Nope. I'm not convinced. It's still bottom of the barrel. Those cute tricks with TFB rarely work, it's a big hassle to upgrade your junk into higher-cost junk, and then half the time it doesn't even collide with your TFB card... and it ends up eating your deck without giving sufficient benefits. Next year, it's definitely going to be dead last, when Thief and Scout are officially gone.

I've done the whole list (best cards) in duell-mode. It took me about 3,5 hours. Just if someone wants to know ;-)
The results are not quit exact, but over all, the most is ok, so I'll let it be like this.

You know, it's possible to duel mode the cards first, and then switch to order mode to change what you're unhappy about. That way, you can shove Catapult down a couple hundred places, and maybe do some other adjustments as well. (Golem at 13 and Prince at 19, but Cultist at 53 and Scrying Pool at 77 overall..?)

Notable placements:

1. Cultist: I was so sure I was going to put this on #1 again, but then that recent game where I lost with Cultists against Vineyards came up, which made me think twice. I still think it's the strongest card in the game though. Not always 100% unstoppable, but still 99% I think, more than any other card.
2. Governor: The drawbacks put me off at first, but I've grown to appreciate the sheer strength of a complete engine all in a single card. Most boards where it appears are a rush to win the split, and beyond that it's not that much less monolithic than a Cultist deck. At least it's way more interesting, though, with all of the choices and the player interaction. (Something similar could be said about #4, Minion.)
8. Bridge Troll: Another one I really underestimated at first. Cost reduction on a Duration is immensely powerful though. Like I said before, Bridge Troll enables megaturns more often than not. I think it's even better than Highway (albeit slightly).
17. Treasure Trove: Adventures has Page and Peasant as insane engine enables, but balances this out with amazing BM enablers too. I already went over Gear, but Treasure Trove is not that far behind. Certainly something I underestimated at first, Treasure Trove-BM with maybe a couple of terminals just obliterates the weaker/mediocre engines.
38. Hunting Party: Terribly overrated. Sure, the Hunting Party stack is a thing sometimes, but mostly if there's nothing better. In most normal engines, you'd prefer a Laboratory over it, since Labs draw your deck much more easily - Hunting Parties have the unfortunate tendency to become cantrips if your deck is almost drawn. Still better than a ton of other cards, but not sure why everyone seems to think it's top 10 material.
48. Horn of Plenty: A cool card, but HoP megaturns are not as common as people think. Often they just get in the way of your engine components, so the megaturn never happens and they can't even gain more components because there are too few cards in play.
50. Council Room: I repented and placed it a lot higher than last year. I don't like having to play it, but sometimes you can't ignore it.
60. Ill-Gotten Gains: Junks you almost as much as your opponent. Blech.
66. Tactician: Seriously, screw Tactician. I can't seem to get it to work, like, ever. Either I have a very specific card I suck at, or Tactician is the most overrated card in all of Dominion. I mean, I guess it's good if there's a TON of virtual money on the board, but how often does that even happen?
72. Counting House: Still fighting for its redemption! It's not very strong, but not the worst either. Try it with a sifter, or maybe in a slog. Or rape everything with Travelling Fair.
73. Cartographer: Suffers from opportunity cost a LOT. You're never sad to have it, but you almost never have the time or resources to pick one up over something else.

15. Lost Arts: My $6+ list is not that controversial, I think. Only Lost Arts might be. I placed it this low because you often don't use it. In many cases, either the engine has plenty of Actions already from Villages, or there is no engine at all even with the +Action token. Pathfinding makes the difference way, WAY more often in my experience. But honestly, Lost Arts is not that bad, almost no $6+ cards are (well, Adventurer, but it's going to leave soon, and Farmland/Harem maybe, but at least they fill an Alt-VP niche).

4. Familiar: It's good, but not amazing due to its high cost. Plus I've been very impressed by both Vineyard and Apothecary recently.

Last year I manually ranked the cards in the category lists, then made a full list using a merge sort strategy. I would pop one of the current leaders in the category list to place as the next entry in the full list.

That's kinda what I did, after doing the individual cost lists more thoroughly. I ordered the top and bottom 30 more precisely, and beyond that I just skimmed if I saw anything I wanted differently.

Depends on what you mean with partially. If you just stop doing compare mode after a while and you're content with the top of your list, it's fine.
But if you do compare mode only for the best cards and click "Don't know" on the other cards, then it has the problem that the worst cards of your e.g. Top 20 gets a 0% rating what is not what you want to accomplish.

There is a dropdown menu, where you chose the set in the top left corner. Below it, there is a dropdown menu which says "not saved". You should change it to "(mode) marked as finished".

Ordering

The only way that may happen that I can think of, is that you did compare cards already in "all the cards". Ordering deletes every previous vote in duels within the same list, but not all cards which means a scenario in which A>B>C where A and C are $5 cards and B is from a different category, the indirect vote A>C doesn't get deleted. So if you now vote C>A in order mode, there's a contradiction. Normally I delete in this case an old vote and it should work anyway, but maybe this doesn't work as well as it should. If this is the case, I can't fix that right now, if this wasn't the case, I'm even more clueless, sorry.


Btw, the three people who got 500 errors, I'm on it. Apparently they did things which exceeds my script time limit on the hoster. I'm in contact now with my hoster and I probably have to pay now more for the hosting to make that work, but we'll see.

Finished the favorites list by duels

I've been careful to make sure that the top 30 corresponds with my Top 30 topic (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=16139.75), but apparently not quite careful enough, as Saboteur is three places too high. Ah well. It's the only mistake I made, and I'll let Saboteur have that one because it's going to be its last entry in any card list. RIP.

Other fun facts about the list:

- Two Events made their way into the top 30, kicking Goons and Quarry out of the top 30: Inheritance at #8 and Pathfinding at #26.
- Philosopher's Stone is the highest ranked Treasure card at #35, right before Bank at #36.
- Library and Festival are right next to each other, at #75 and #76.
- Duplicate is the highest Reserve card, at #80. Apparently I don't like Reserves. Heh. Must be because they feel pretty slow most of the time.
- Market and Bazaar are also right next to each other, at #94 and #95.
- Other than Coppersmith and Saboteur, most removed cards are rather low. Tribute is at #108, and then the next one is Woodcutter at #176.
- Other than Woodcutter, the other removed cards from the Base set are all in the bottom 40.
- Surprisingly, Possession is not in the bottom 10 (it's 11th from the bottom). Not sure how that happened, but I dislike all cards below it as well, so it's probably fine.

Notable decisions:

Chapel, Peasant, Page: Peasant is better than Page. Fuck you, it just is. Page games are all the same. You buy two Pages, you go through the thing, you hope Warrior misses, you end up trashing maybe 2 cards with Warrior if you're really lucky, but the attack does nothing because you both go for Champion anyway so you have no time to build a big Warrior chain. You then end up with infinite Actions, yippee. But it's not really a guarantee of an engine or anything. Peasant almost guarantees an engine is possible, and it's a lot more versatile and just fun to play with. I genuinely think the options Peasant gives you are just better. I have picked each of the token options as the first choice at one point or another. It's so cool. But Chapel is still better than both of them.

CoTR at 5: This seems really high, but it's probably one of the best Villages in the game. It's really two Villages in one, and you never need to line it up with anything. You don't even care that it's a dead card in your deck when you call it.

Save at 6: Save is super important and you should buy it in every game it appears in.

Encampment at 7: This is probably too high, I know, but it certainly is a very good card worth fighting for in most games it appears in.

CSM should probably be above Pawn. Herbalist is way too high but I really value +Buy more than most of the things below it.

Notable decisions:

Amb, Masq: I think Amb is still better. Maybe that's just me, but the nerf to Masq pins combined with the inherent risk factor of using it makes Amb better in my book. More control.

Fishing Village, Ferry: Might be a bit high, but it's the Village you buy so you never have to think about terminal space. Ferry is definitely correct at 4th though, it's super powerful and game defining.

Urchin, Steward, Gear, Amulet: This seems like the right order. I'm less high on Mercenary than I used to be. It's very good still. I vastly prefer Steward to Amulet but they are both good. Gear is just powerful in any deck, like you wouldn't believe if it weren't already hyped up so much on this forum.

Bonfire at 10: Bonfire is among the fastest trashers in the game, of course it should be this high.

Guide at 13: This seems Too High and should probably be lower, but it is seriously underrated. If you think Guide is bad, you're bad. It bails you out of any handsize attack or bad turn, vastly reducing the effects of shuffle luck on your game. You actually start to welcome bad hands because they make your Guide replacement hand better.

Enchantress at 24: This seems kind of low actually, Enchantress is very good. The extra draw moreso than the attack, but the attack is very infuriating early on regardless. Later it's just a draw card basically.

I have a hard time telling if getting Prince was a near-optimal choice when I do actually use it. It don't think it's bottom 5 in the $6 costs though. I can imagine Hoard being better than it though, or at least useful more often.

#1 Windfall: This looks so cool. I like the colours and you can really see, how he gets the 3 Golds.

#3 Hireling: You see, how hard the life as Hireling is, sad and cold.
#4 Mill: Nice image and a beautiful landscape. Cool idea, to make the image green and white as it hast the type Action-Victory.
#5 Royal Carriage: Even if it looks a bit strange, when you look exactly, I like the combination of the colours.

#394 Develop: Sorry, but that is nothing. Strange combination of colours, no depth, but flat. And what is the "tower" in front?! Dr. Freud would have an idea...
#393 Fortune: Maybe this is on purpose, but that looks like a child had painted it.
#392 Navigator: To be honest, I like the sextant (or what it is...). But the guy looks strange. Is he Asian? Is he kind of yellow? To much sterotype for me.
#391 Mandarin: Again a flat painting. And the background looks strange.
#390 Transmogrify: On the one hand, it looks to realistic to me. On the other hand, the white lines in the front look like magic. Both doesn't really fit to the other cards of Dominion.

Well I'm really sorry, this kind of sucks. I'm curious what the cause of this might be as I'm using a Jquery library for that sorting and should work. Text file works of course as well. Make sure that you didn't save so that I don't count your misordered list.

It's basically a topological sorting. But to you not having to make the duels with the same cards several times in a row (to not make it boring and as tedious and a bit more varied) and to get an approximately good outcome even if you don't make all the comparisms I made my own implementation of it. That may result in a bit more comparisms, but in my testing it was still pretty quick. I thought about optimizing it by offering comparisms based on the results of other (finished) lists, but that hasn't happened yet and I'm even not sure if that is worth it.

Presumably the comparison system is just using a quicksort or similar to order the cards, but the way the list on the right varies as you go definitely appears to have some heuristics going into it.  What are the heuristics?  Do they affect what comparisons you're offered, to try to optimise the number of comparisons?

It's basically a topological sorting. But to you not having to make the duels with the same cards several times in a row (to not make it boring and as tedious and a bit more varied) and to get an approximately good outcome even if you don't make all the comparisms I made my own implementation of it. That may result in a bit more comparisms, but in my testing it was still pretty quick. I thought about optimizing it by offering comparisms based on the results of other (finished) lists, but that hasn't happened yet and I'm even not sure if that is worth it.

I also had the same problem... The order gets messed up when I change compare to order mode.

Notable placements:

Remake at 1, Tournament at 3, Herald at 5: The best just keeps getting better with each expansion I think. Tournament might be a little high here. I haven't compared this to my list last year.

Villa at 2: No joke, Villa completely changes how you play a board, and it's honestly not THAT bad of a Village once it's in your deck. It's like Squire but you get a Buy every time, hardly the worst Village ever. The thing is, if you're overbuying terminals enough that you're going to want to pick up Villa, then you probably have enough draw to deal with a non-drawing Village anyway.

Wandering Minstrel at 4: Once it's in your deck, Wandering Minstrel is the best Village in the game. People tend to really under-rate Villages in their rankings lists for some reason, but they are really what enable everything good in Dominion to happen, so people should do more to recognize their importance. Minstrel makes an engine possible on many boards which otherwise could not sustain it, and it basically guarantees you'll draw good stuff right after you play it. It's a Village good enough that it's bought when you don't need extra Actions. Which other Villages can you say that about, Border Village maybe?

Magpie at 11: It's below the other power $4 cantrips, but it's still really good, particularly as a Token target (which every card should have as a consideration when ranking, and speaking of which, I should have ranked Port higher, might change that).

Rocks at 69: Rocks sucks. I mean, there's Catapult I guess, but that's it.

EDIT: Posted slightly changed list, just dragged a few things around to better places. Maybe I accidentally overrated Port and Sea Hag by doing this or underrated Magpie and Advisor, idk. What's important is that most of the time, Young Witch is the far better card.

The most exciting quality of Rocks is the Silver gain to hand if it's your action phase.  Using a gainer like Workshop to gain Rocks will give you $2 immediately that turn - at the very least.  If you have an extra action and another use for the Silver (Storyteller, Apprentice, Catapult!), even better.  Or, consider Upgrade or Transmogrify: trash Silver to get a Rocks and gain a Silver to hand.  Trash Rocks into something valuable and also gain Silver to hand.  Gaining Rocks with Watchtower in hand is also great; you can gain two Silvers to hand!  That's some serious payload.  And Silver is rarely bad when Catapult is in the kingdom: the double attack is brutal.  At its worst, Rocks still provides three sources of a brutal attack in combination with Catapult.  Rocks is one of the most unique cards in Dominion, and I don't have a good feel for its power level, but I don't think its near the bottom of the barrel.

It's probably better than Brigand, you're right. That was an oversight. I did this list while avoiding paying attention to a meeting at work.

It's probably better than Talisman too, but I have to give that more thought. Winning cheap splits is more important than ever, and Talisman is occasionally clutch while Gardens really rarely is.

I also did not realize how low I put engineer. It's really the third best gainer; being able to trash itself is huge. I'll shuffle those around when I can access the list with a mouse.

Temple is one I have difficulty placing. It is better at trashing than Bishop but it scores fewer points and doesn't have end game scoring or payload potential. Monument has recently gotten some very good synergies (Royal Carriage, Storyteller, Crown, tokens) and is essentially boundless in VP gaining with no mandatory trash, so it is much better payload.

Temple compares quite unfavorably to Remake as a trasher, but that's because Remake is a top 5 trasher and Temple is just average. Remake's upgrade utility gives it more purpose after thinning than Temple does, and Remake always removes two junk cards if you have them in your hand while Temple only removes two different cards.

Temple is pretty good though, and the number 35 seems wrong. Ultimately I think it's not unskippable (excluding opportunistic buys to get 4+ VP) and it's pretty good but not great at its role. It's just weird. I don't have the best grip on it yet.

On average if scout fell into your deck you would be more happy than if theif did but ambassador would rather send curses.

You can't compare bad cards as though you always had them in your deck, because most of the time you don't. Instead, you should consider how good they are in your deck in the rare situation where you actually want the card, and how often you have that situation. Thief wins on both of those.

well, scout loses out on the latter condition because of how bad it is in the former condition. in theory, you want the effect of 'get victory cards from your deck' very often, but scout happens to be very bad at doing that, more so than thief is at stealing treasures. i would estimate that there are more times than we think wherein someone would rather have a scout than the next best thing at $4, but those times are so rare and hard to evaluate that the card just doesn't get bought, and rightfully so; you will probably not improve as a player very much even if you know every time you would want a scout. however, thief is relevant much less often; nowadays there aren't very many games where your opponent has a lot of treasures and you also want them, and also playing thief is better than playing a different action and just buying the treasures. but, in those games, thief has a lot of bang for its buck.

I think while Thief's effect is more important when you do want it, Scout is actually a card I want in my deck more often than Thief, enough that I feel Scout is the marginally better card.

I don't play enough Fool's Gold / Thief games, but I play plenty of Apothecary, Scrying Pool, Herald, or Mystic games where I can afford to gain a nonterminal 4.

You shouldn't buy Scout just because Apothecary, Scrying Pool, Herald or Mystic is in the game and you can afford to gain a nonterminal 4. You need to be able to utilize the fact that it's a non-terminal Action that costs $4 and is named Scout somehow, you need to be able to utilize the deck reordering somehow, you need to be able to utilize the Victory card drawing somehow and you need to be able to gain it for entirely free (i.e. the only other alternative would be nothing at all), and then it's just a super little bit better than nothing. If the only thing it's doing for your deck is helping your Mystics, you should trash any Scouts that you have gotten somehow.

I was doing art rankings for three weeks and finally this is finished! I will post top-20 and bottom-20 with some comments:

2.) Advance   
3.) Warrior 
Top-3 is girls with swords. Funny. Page is just so very beautiful! the art and everything. Same is Warrior. Advance is a perfect choice of colors, the white dress is spectacular here.
4.) Necropolis
5.) Overgrown Estate
Somehow those two ended close. I love Shelters art, Hovel's not here just because I don't really like the colors there. But Necropolis' lines and the fire that seems alive. But OE's monumentality and nice interaction with Base Set Estate card. I love it.
6.) Advisor - Nothing to say really, cool card with cool idea and cool interaction between art and what it does.
7.) Royal Carriage - Yeah, really, at first you don't see what's going on on this card but then you realise it's rather cool. I love this purple, I don't think any other card has this purple.
8.) Crown - Hardest contester. I love it, but it was hard to compare this card to others. In the end I'm happy with its 8th place.
9.) Sauna/Avanto - At first I thought it will win. Then I understood that it's not enough but still, the card is awesome!
10.) Save - I love colors on this card.
11.) Jester - Nothing to say. I think Jester will end in top-20.
12.) Caravan - If you look at this card more and more, you see more and more details. The horizon, sea out there, everything is on its place.
13.) Wedding - Nice theme, cool colors.
14.) Sprawling Castle - best castle ever. This dark orange is awesome, the very castle seems endless.
15.) Wall - Looks like photo actually, also GoT fans, hi!
16.) Followers - Colors and people are drawn with good detailing. Love this card.
17.) Avanto - Outtake from my loving Sauna/Avanto randomizer. I'm actually surprised Sauna isn't in top-20.
18.) Distant Lands - Many details and I really want to go there.
19.) Masquerade - Always think about how good the art is when I play with it.
20.) Labyrinth - I like the idea that it didn't have the exit in the beginning but now it has.

111. Castles - they did end up pretty high. This may be subject to change, but I think ignoring Castles could sometimes be as bad as ignoring Knights.
150. Annex - apprently the definition of an average card-shaped thing.
176. Engineer vs 177. Workshop - the new card gets a tiny advantage.
201. Ratcatcher - it's one of the worst trashers out there, because of its inherent slowness and being limited to your starting hand.
252. Woodcutter - the best of the removed cards.
297. Scout vs 298. Transmute vs 299. Adventurer - Scout gets a bit of an edge due to stuff like Inheritance and various Estate-flooders in Empires.

Things I've learned from completing these three rankings:

1. Deciding my top X and bottom X cards is fairly easy, but everything in the middle is nigh impossible. I find myself caught in the loop of Card A > Card B > Card C > Card A over and over, and the loops even intertwine to the point that I am utterly baffled as to my own opinion. Nevertheless, I managed to rank them all by what I deem is "best" (most likely to earn you victory in the most possible situations), favorite (the criteria for which is somewhat less focused - something between how much do I enjoy playing this card, how much do I hate losing to this card, how amazing is it when someone actual wins with this card, and a sprinkle of inexplicable bias), and favorite art (a complete shot in the dark).

2. If I were to rank them all again right now, the lists would all look at least slightly different. And I am very happy about that. I enjoy the fact that at any moment, I could play a game of Dominion with a particular card and decide that it is, in fact, much better than I gave it credit for. Then later, I might decide that it really isn't that good after all. This seesaw effect of learning the power levels of particular cards through playing them in various kingdoms is what keeps Dominion at the top of my favorite games list. I have played literally thousands of games, read numerous articles and opinions, and I still feel the excitement of learning the game whenever I approach a new board.

3. Adventures is easily my favorite Dominion set.

4. Claus Stephan is easily my favorite Dominion artist.

I am thoroughly looking forward to the unveiling of the full lists, and would like to applaud Qvist for putting in the time to make this possible every year. This is my first time ranking, but I have enjoyed these lists for some time. Bravo, sir!

Landmarks: If you did no duels or left the rate field empty, they won't get taken into account. If you did, you can click on the X to delete or delete the values from the rate list.
All cards: It gets counted by default, put together from the individual lists you did. As not a lot do the full list we get a better list this way than not counting them.

That's way less than last year unfortunately. But the results should still be meaningful enough.

I had it at 9, but I could plausibly see it around 13 on my list. I think with Second Edition and Avanto in next time it'll dip below 15 on my list.

I think Rebuild is going to fall a little in the rankings, but it still seems like a top 10 $5 card to me.  Adventures did add plenty of cards that help fuel engines, but it also added some cards that synergize well with Rebuild.  Ferry + Rebuild is almost always the dominant strategy when it appears.  Messenger is one of the best Rebuild support cards if the opponent isn't mirroring: junk them with Estates and trigger strategic reshuffles.  Scouting Party, Dungeon, and Guide let you see your Rebuilds more often.  I have less experience with Empires, but it seems like many of the Landmarks will strengthen Rebuild: Aqueduct, Bandit Fort, Battlefield, Labyrinth, Mountain Pass, Tomb, Wall, Wolf Den.  However, most of the Alt-VP cards in Empires hurt Rebuild, and there are a lot of them.  Time will tell.

I agree with this. Especially the part about the addition of points in Empires making Rebuild even less playable--Rebuild is only "good" because it destroys the points pool and doesn't give the engine the time to catch up. But in Empires with there being a lot of other ways to score points (and often those ways being nearly wholly unavailable to the Rebuild player), it makes Rebuild less of an even reasonable option on most boards.

Playing Rebuild is basically essentially the same as playing a strong-ish BM strategy. And those strategies are less and less relevant by the day.

Sure, that would be possible, not sure how useful this info would be though. I'm not really interested in doing that, especially as such information might influence future votings as a person might vote "conservatively" just to be high in this list.

Hi, Qvist. Love your rankings page - I keep a tab open to it to refer to when I play all the time. Even if you never do anymore, awesome job! If you don't want to or can't put any more time into it we'd understand. Maybe you could just post a quick list of the remaining $5 and $6+ rankings without worrying about doing any videos so then anyone could update the wiki and you could be done with it? Just an idea.

So...I really do like the videos myself, and try to watch all of them when I have time.  I greatly appreciate the work that Qvist puts into them and I frequently gain added insights into cards.  I'm not a tournament player myself (although I have played thousands of games), so I think I more represent the casual player.  I participated in the past on the ratings, but did not do so this past year because I had not played as much.  However...I do agree with your point that the creation of the videos may have be slowing down the publication of the lists, and perhaps it has become too large an effort for one person when they have have other life priorities.  I also agree with you that I would prefer to see the lists posted every few days in a more timely manner.  Maybe videos could follow after the lists?...perhaps just summary videos for each cost group?  Just trying to think of something that might make it easier for Qvist to complete this.  I'm anxious to see the 2nd edition cards in next year's list, but worried about it being feasible again.  I've seen others offer to help out...maybe time to consider it Qvist??

The problem now is different. Normally I think about Dominion like all the time, I'm obsessed with it. That's why I make those lists. I was working on a different project the last half year though (it started being for fun, but got big and evolved) and still I managed to release the lists, slower sure, but I did it because I wanted to.

But lately I somehow don't think about Dominion, don't want to play and so on. Usually when I'm in that kind of mood, it goes away very quickly. But this time it stays. I still force myself to play the league because when I'm playing I'm pretty sure I get in the mood again to continue.

I want to finish it, I just really can't concentrate looking at those numbers, not sure what's going on. I tried several times, but ended up doing something different instead.
I will now schedule some games for the next weeks for the League. If I don't end up continuing the lists in the next weeks, I will think about just posting the results and be done with it.

You'll get back into the swing of things. Dominion is a great game. You probably just need some extended time from it. We all need that sometimes.

I've looked for a more generic ranking tool like Qvist's multiple times before and I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist. I also asked Qvist personally who had no idea of any such thing.

'ranking tool' yields results related to website rankings in search engines. 'list ordering tool' yields stuff like alphabetizers and randomizers. The closest I got was with 'favorites ordering tool', which yielded something very similar for Pokemon: http://fio4ri.github.io/FavoritePokemon/ . But still, nothing generic.

If you ever do happen to find something like this, please let me know, it would honestly be a dream come true. Not even slightly exaggerating.

I've actually had the same thing happen to me, after being completely obsessed with Dominion for two years I kinda lost interest. At first I thought it was because of the new client or because of some losing streak, but it wasn't. I guess those things just happen. But hey, it's still a cool game and I still play it IRL every once in a while.

Obviously post-release, and include Nocturne cards in the rankings. I mean it's easy enough to remove those cards for "clean" rankings, and then we can later have the joy of seeing how wrong we all were.

Last year, 2nd edition cards were also released around October, and even though that was before the rankings, they were not included in the rankings.  But ignoring precedent, I agree with including Nocturne.

One change I would ask for this year is to have only the individual category rankings, and remove the fully combined rankings.  Fully ranking the cards took a lot more time, and then we never saw the results for it anyway.

I guess I should clarify that I'm assuming Nocturne will actually be released in October. I mean it's common for games to get delayed, though I have no info on whether Nocturne specifically will be. If it somehow doesn't come out until late December or 2018, then do the rankings without it. I'm not sure what the exact cutoff date should be.

I'd say give us at least a month to play with Nocturne before doing a ranking.  So if it releases as planned in October, put up the polls for the rankings sometime in November.
