Woodchancellor

Who is the Woodchancellor? Why does he look so familiar? And how did he get to the lofty position of running the undergraduate program in forestry at the University?

I'm pretty sure this hypothetical card has been brought up before, but now in the second edition, there's a design space just waiting for it and it no longer has the problem of being strictly better than anything. I always thought Woodcutter and Chancellor were almost okay cards, except that Woodcutter isn't interesting enough and Chancellor isn't useful enough. That's why Woodcutter needs a non-vanilla effect and Chancellor needs +1 Buy, making them the same card.

Still balanced at $3, right?

I think this can work. But it needs like a new name like 'message bringer' or something. And maybe something cool, like when you buy it, you can gain an additional card costing up to $4 and everyone else get's the same card. That would be wacky, yet fun!

Woodcutter and Chancellor have already been combined into Messenger in Adventures. That'S most likely why they have been cut out of the second edition of Dominion.

No, they were cut because they were dud cards.

I don't think he looks much like Familiar.

Y'know, I haven't played enough Empires. I totally forgot that's what Messenger did.

Apparently this means this ability should cost $4, right? Unless the on-gain of Messenger somehow makes it more valuable.

FTFY

Anyways, Messanger would be fine at but it would be too much better than Chancellor.

We tested a strictly better card that didn't make it; being strictly better than a removed card did feel like a point against it, though I don't know if that would have been enough to kill it by itself. None of the new cards are strictly better than another Dominion card (I use the term in the way most Magic players do, e.g. including cost).

Here's Donald's quote on the subject. I mean, it might not be a problem, but it's still meh.

Another suggestion:

Wood Scout
Types: Action
Costs: $4

+1 Buy

Reveal the top 4 cards of your deck. Put the revealed Victory and Copper cards into your hand. Put the other cards on top of your deck in any order.

Edit: I changed this a little.

Might actually use this one (with a different name of course). I liked Secret Chamber's reaction.
Quote
Secret Coppersmamber
Cost $4 - Action - Reaction
Discard any number of cards from your hand. +$2 for each copper discarded, +$1 for each action card discarded.
-
When another player plays an attack, you may reveal this. If you do, draw 2 cards, then put 2 cards from your hand on top of your deck.
Thought it might be edging too close to 5-cost territory, so I restricted it to coppers and actions cards.

How about this?

You may put your deck into your discard pile.
When you gain this, each other player gains a Silver.
Will he come back?

I think a lot of people hated the reaction bit. Personally it was annoying as heck to resolve be cuase they would just keep on putting it back onto their deck.

I don't know why I posted this...Maybe I'm too sleepy.
I cannot use Messenger's on-buy well. Without that, I'll buy it more...

So I'll make it easier to take to let him come back someday.

Messenger's on-play.

When you buy this, each player (including you) put his deck into his discard pile.

I'm still not convinced you can justify an entirely new card just with a new below-the-line. Of course, village and peddler might be the exceptions here, but a Bazzar that had a when-gain each other player gains a silver at wouldn't be that cool

Your opponent reveals the top card of their deck. If it's a Treasure card, they either trash it, discard it, or put it back, your choice. If they trashed it, and it costs up to $5, you may gain it, putting it in your hand. Then, reveal the top card of your deck; if it's a Treasure card, put it in your hand. Either way, you may put your deck into your discard pile.

Might actually be balanced, if a bit on the wordy side. :P

At least his name isn't "Chancellor Wood". I've heard people talk about hot Chancellors before. We might not want to let them down.

I think Messenger costs $4 because it would be too crazy if you opened with two of them with its on-gain.  The woodchancellor would probably be fine at $3.

4 player game.

Open messenger. (Gain 1). Choose messenger (3 more gains.)

Second player does the same. (Gain 1) Choose messenger (3 more gains.)

And voila, everyone has 2 messengers and the pile is almost depleted!

I wouldn't do it during the turn, as several can get annoying. How about:

Cantriplor, $2, Action
+1 Card
+1 Action
----
When you discard this from play, you may put your deck in your discard pile.

I kinda like King Leon's version, but I'm trying to figure out an actual replacement for Secret Chamber. So maybe:
Quote
Secret Scout
Types: Action
Costs: $4

+1 Buy
Reveal the top 4 cards of your deck. Put any revealed Copper, Curses and Victory cards into your hand. Put the other cards on top of your deck in any order. You may put a card from your hand on top of your deck.
-
When another player plays an attack card, you may play this from your hand.
The "You may put a card from your hand on your deck" part protects from trashing attacks (and Jester, but only once), and the "Play this from your hand" reaction keeps it from topdecking itself.

EDIT: ...meh. I think I'll use King Leon's WoodScout and do something else with Secret Chamber's reaction.

EDIT2: Ooohhh, here's an idea. If I just add the reaction to Secret Passage, do you think it'd be too strong?  I don't think so since the effect is almost exactly the same except for protecting from trashing attacks (and Jester).
Quote
Secret Passage
$4 cost - Action - Reaction
+2 Cards
+1 Action
Take a card from your hand and put it anywhere in your deck.
-
When another player plays an attack card, you may play this from your hand.

We just played with that card, just for fun, and I realize, howlll surprisingly good it is. Unlike Council Room there is much less terminal collision (because WS cannot draw itself). The extra buy is interesting, because you can use it to buy more Copper. We had Harem in the kingdom t
