and then water it for a few months, and then you'll come back to find salt plants!

if you take a trip down memory lane and look at the 'popular buys' subsection of councilroom.com, you'll see that governor made for, on average, the fastest games, at 16.99 (rebuild would probably beat it now but you know). salt the earth would also probably be up there. i mean pretty much any kingdom with salt the earth can be worked out to end the game at around turn 6 if both players cooperate, but the fact that it's there should always put things on a timer. what's fun is that this timer can actually be two different things: "hey, you better hurry up with your late-blooming province engine because i can very quickly make it mathematically impossible for you to win" or "hey, you better hurry it up with your alt-vp thing because i can literally end the game on provinces also very quickly." and the fact that this card was released with empires makes the two of these much closer to equally likely, which is nice.

-how good is the fabled 'pure salt strategy'? the absolute earliest you can expect to force the game is really turn 9, and that's with something like open banquet gain cache or something, unless there's something that produces a lot of $8 and 2 buy turns fast but with that you could just buy provinces
-how often does this not target province or colony? take a bite out of your opponent's nobles engine? screw up their rogues by salting duchy?
-should this cause the fastest games? would it have an effect therein without ever being purchased?

I remember a game where I went for Castles but never ended up getting Grand Castle because I didn't want my opponent to Salt the King's Castle. I couldn't quite put together a turn to get both of them. I still won, but not as epicly as I hoped to.

I played a game with Haunted Woods that just dragged, and people were buying Salt the Earth a lot, partially because it wouldn't trigger the Haunted Woods effect, but mostly to try to end the game out of spite.

I always spend the whole game with Salt trying to plan on a mega turn where I burn the rest of the Province pile, and then the game ends up ending normally.

It will be a lot different in online play with the prevalence of VP counters.

This likes +Buy.  Or rather, this likes you to be in the lead in points, and +Buy.

Also, I might Salt Duchies if I hit in a Rebuild game.

Do you buy Salt the Earth first, or Provinces first?

In my first few games, I bought Provinces first, followed by Salt the Earth when I knew I was winning.  But that just makes my deck worse for a longer part of the game.

On the other hand, if I buy Salt the Earth first, how am I so sure I'm in the lead?  It also removes the element of surprise, which is fairly important when everyone is still new to Salt the Earth.

It looks like Salt the Earth/Feodum would work in a game where you want a ton of Silvers.

It helps Big Money a ton, actually. Get three Provinces then start salting the earth on $4 and $5 hands.

This event is going to end friendships. Cockblock opponents from getting points.

This looks really annoying. Haven't played with it, but I could see this being one of Dominion's most hated cards.

It is very annoying to lose to it but the event is in full sight all game long and if you haven't prepared for it then you only have yourself to blame.

So is rebuild, but that doesn't make it a fun card

i would say that the lower bound for the fun of this card is about twice as fun as rebuild, which is to say, not awful. the big thing is that pretty much no game will have salt as the only kingdom thing that you buy. it does maybe push the game in a frustrating direction though

I thought of a cruel trick you could play with Salt the Earth. Get Graverobber and/or Rogue out of the Black Market on a Duke board and then start Salting the Duchies.

So if I trash a Feodum with Salt the Earth, I get the Silvers ?

You do. And a tomb point, if it is in the kingdom.

Ok thanks !
I was like, can you trigger "when you trash a card" effect with this event — because I wasn't sure that was really you that made the action "trash" ? But I realized there was no card with such effect, so I asked in the case of Feodum instead

I had a game where I basically rushed Salt the Earths. Opened Baron Gladiator then pretty much rushed it. My opponent had started building cards like peddler and didn't have enough for outright province so we both started getting Dutchies. Eventually won out by a few points due to my being able to hit $5 and even $7 regulary, though all 8 pronvices were salted.

I think it works best when an opponent can't get to $8 fast enough, or you can get other VPs + coins (in this case Baron).

"hey, you better hurry it up with your alt-vp thing because i can literally end the game on provinces also very quickly."
You can use Salt the Earth for that. But if you've got some Provinces in your deck, wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to use a remodeler to turn Provinces into Provinces?

Every now and again, I deal a devastating "oh dear, I hadn't thought of that" blow to an opponent in a game of Dominion. I'd built my engine using Transmogrify; he'd taken a different path that had started slowly but had caught up and was about to overtake me. Four-player game, and the Colonies were divided 3/3/2/1 with three left in the supply. Being tied on VP, I called three Transmogrifies for Colony->Colony then bought an Estate.

Salt the Earth isn't strong per se, but it's a card whose presence you pretty much can never ignore...

Bwaha.

Thank you guys!

I didn't ggot the point of this cst, but then I read up here and ended up on a quite attack-heavy board (Militia, Ghost Ship, Torturer) where it was a struggle to came above 4. Starting to salting regularly and suddenly.. win. Very impressive. This is indeed a quite neat thingy.

Got rewarded with a "gfy".. I suspect it's not anything nice..

I feel like, in this context, it was likely "go fuck yourself". But "good for you" is also a possibility, and much less depressing.
