iso rating not weighing strength of opponent enough?

hello, kind of a long story here but i thought this was interesting and worth discussing...

so sometimes i can't find anybody within 1000 rating points of me, and i just set matchmaking to play anyone.  a lot of these people will gain you like 5 points if you win and cost you like 80 if you lose, and dominion is a swingy enough game that your MF rating will drop like a rock if you play enough of these folks.

however, even on my worst losing streaks to these players, my iso rating wouldn't drop much at all!  i'd always remain quite a bit higher than i was at my lowest points when i was just playing evenly-matched opponents.  i suspect this is because i was still winning a much higher % of games overall, and perhaps you could argue that's a better way of doing it.  it just doesn't feel right to me that if i cared about nothing but iso, i should dodge Titandrake and spend all night playing against WeedGoku69.  i'm curious if others have noticed this and if i'm alone in feeling this way...

I'm not going to worry about it. Everything is going to get overhauled next year, and then I'll take a look at how things are done.

I think this is a feature, not a bug. Swingy games shouldn't cause such a massive ratings variance if you have bad luck against a bad player.

You are underestimating WeedGoku69. When he's charged up, his power level multiplies so many times you'll feel like signing a nuclear nonproliferation treaty.

I was really hoping WeedGoku69 was a real player. That name is perfect.

i can see why you could argue for this.  it's just interesting that in practice it could potentially lead to someone "cheating" the system by ducking top players.  probably would come up more in a larger game, like how you always hear about boosters on xbox live or w/e

It seems someone was inspired by this thread, and WeedGoku69 is now a real player.  According to the log files, he first started playing last week.  I played a couple games against him last night.  He was on a 13 game winning streak, yet I won our 2 games.  Apparently I caught him before he powered up.

Well done, he's usually very good :)

It's quite hard to track your deck, not to mention remember exactly the strategy and cards you bought, when you're all Goku69'd out. Dominion is still fun, but your ladder ranking takes a hit. I can't wait for the new client to maybe possibly have multiple aliases (it might not) for this reason
