so, empires is essentially out. intuitively, the let's discuss threads should accommodate this thing. however, i may have lied when i said empires is essentially out because most of us have not really played games with empires at all, and perhaps most of us think that it is either unproductive or apocryphal to discuss them to any level of depth before we have. that is why the survey do.

if some critical mass of people answer 1 or even 4, there will indeed be some series of threads here about each empires item and they will have to be generally started by me because order is an illusion.

I think you should wait a few months, rather than weeks.
We have lots of places to express our first impressions, and personally I'd rather have the "let's discuss" threads to be a bit more knowledgeable than that. Did I spell that right?
Anyhow, I'm for a series of threads to host early discussion about Empires, but maybe grouping them in arbitrarily chosen groups of 3, and later doing the whole let's discuss thing around Jan 2017?

I agree with this. Don't rush into it.

One of the things about Let's Discuss when it started is that we had kind of a critical mass of boredom and lack of discussion. Adventures had been out for MONTHS but wasn't online yet. All this dumb drama had happened with thread topic control and people being mean to each other about the Dominion League or whatever. I was just like "fuck, I really wanna talk about Adventures cards, let's discuss them!" And some of us were going off of first impressions from six months ago and others of us had real play experience with them, and the contrast between that really made discussion interesting and worth having.

So I would hold off on the actual Lets Discuss template style of looking at these cards until some more of us get some play experience with them, maybe a month, maybe longer? but definitely at least a month or two before they come out online. This is not the same as saying "we shouldn't discuss Empires cards yet", no, we totally should, just that the kind of forced and formulaic nature of formal Let's Discuss posts are kind of a way of making discussion out of nothing when right now discussion threads about things like Donate and Salt the Earth are happening kind of organically, you know?

And yeah schaad you should do the threads I think; not that Seprix's threads or wero's threads were at all bad but you're hilarious and insightful and I enjoy reading things you say.

I´d personally feel it would be nice to discuss the cards now, just everyone´s opinion of what they think of the card, without much experience with it at all... So then later we could revive those topics and see which opinions were pretty much spot on (donate is amazing) and what was completely off...  :D

It´s like what was going on the previews topics, but for all the other cards too.

verdict: i will start a thread each day starting july 17th that has some group of empires paraphernalia. hopefully by then many of us will have played about one game with most of them. we will probably discuss them again later.

see you then, everybody

Semicolons don't require a shift.  At least, not on my keyboard.

until then, when i was organizing my empires cards just now i made a preliminary-preliminary power ranking of the cards. it is not only largely incorrect because i have known what all the cards are for, like, less than a week, and also the empires cards are hard to compare. delve is pretty obviously a better bet than, say, duchess, and also there's other stuff like, conquest is generally better than harem. maybe. and also, since debt, it is especially hard to compare the different costs; thus it ends up being something of an 'influential ranking'. but well, here goes.

Code: [Select]
1. donate (i'm excited to find out that this may be wrong; until then this seems to be the strongest dominion card)
2. advance
3. triumph
4. royal blacksmith
5. chariot race
6. delve
7. settlers/bustling village
8. overlord
9. capital
10. conquest
11. city quarter
12. archive
13. dominate
14. encampment
15. salt the earth
16. legionary
17. gladiator/fortune
18. wedding
19. charm
20. patrician/emporium
21. villa
22. groundskeeper
23. enchantress
24. temple
25. ritual
26. catapult/rocks
27. engineer
28. farmers' market
29. wild hunt
30. forum
31. banquet
32. crown
33. annex
34. tax
35. windfall
36. sacrifice
37. castles

...and castles are pretty influential. this expansion is on the high end.
if other people wanna try it, the thread title works pretty well for it.

I don't think it is right to compare Events with Kingdom cards. There should be two separate lists.

On another note, I will give my initial impressions when my game box comes in on Thursday.

Well, obviously. Events and Kingdom Cards do not mix though. Comparing Annex to Emporium is going to be hard, because they are not even the same thing.

If something costs the same, I feel comparing cards and events makes sense.

they do mix—in fact, usually you'll see them mixed together. and somehow we managed to compare wharf to duke, and those two things are also very not the same.

You buy an Event, it is a one time use. You buy an Action card, you keep it forever (unless you trash/edgecase/etc). Events are by nature different.

You state that Wharf and Duke are different, and this is true. But they both stay in your deck, Events are never in your deck, they only affect your deck or play.

But you are paying for the effect the kongdom card gives throughout the game. Events are the same, but usually, the effect is s one time thing and more immediate.

To me, you're still spending your cash on something, and either the kingdom card does something or the event does something. But, you are paying for something.
