I can't figure out how to view older versions of the leaderboard. Could someone help me out? I would love to see my all time high which must have been sometime during late 2010 or early 2011.

You just change the date in the link that is here ;)

levels...pfff...mean skill is the thing guys, level is for noobs :-)

Unlucky, that I didnt reach the 60,0 mark some time ago, only got to 59,7 (before my match against RisingJaguar).

Some weeks ago Dekker had a skill over 60, but +-23 deviation :D

I totally agree - better player has a better skill. The fact that he doesn't play so much as others doesn't really matter...but I don't know, Elo's system has some really big problems which TrueSkill maybe doesn't, so maybe TS is better...

I found this page:
http://bggdl.square7.ch/leaderboard/

Unfortunately it only seems to go back to last March.

As an aside, look at the filesizes growing as the game grows in popularity!

Is this an appropriate place to brag that DS hit 1.5M views this morning?  Our first half-million views came after ~8 months; the next half-million took ~4 months, and this half million took ~2 months.  Thank you Dominion Christmas presents.

f.DS is approaching 500,000 views per month, but unlike the main site, this counts our own visits, so that eliminates, like, 499,000 of those.

Yeah, I like to tune in. After exactly 777 games (20 games more than the OP) I finally reached Level 30 too yesterday.
Thank you all for wonderful advices and excellent articles that helped me a lot to improve my playing skills.

If you match my play history,k you're more likely to fall back to 37/38.

On the mini sub topic of leaderboard gaming history, back before what I would consider to be the current legit champions (Fabian / jonts / allfail / WanderingWinder / -Stef- (congrats today btw)) most of whom I have played and am convinced that they play at a higher level than I do, there were a few perchers who's play habits looked suspect.  Larry was up there for a while, but there weren't many examples of him playing high level opponents.  Some game logs looked suspicious.  Then tat showed up, and was also someone it was very tough to get a match against.  There were some folks who always played colonies.

At this point I had a "theory" that the top of the leaderboard wasn't appropriately reflecting true player skill, and since it was impossible for me to play these top players, I decided to see if I could do the same thing.  Unfortunately for me, the username "theory" was already taken, so I entered as "conjecture".  (Added bonus - everyone thought I was him!)

The theory was:
- Selection of certain cards can make the game more or less skill based.  (E.g. a player who just buys 2 treasure maps and hits them on reshuffle 3, will probably win ~30% of the time, regardless of whatever the isotropic level difference rating formula says the true probability should be)
- There is a big gap in skill once players learn about big money.

So I said, I'll target low level players (ones who have actually played a decent # of games, vs. the players with a skill rating of 37 +/- 25), and I'll constrain my cards to avoid things that I considered to be "lucky".

This was basically: No potion cards, no black market, no tournament, and no treasure map.
I required colonies, because it makes the the game longer in general (avg. 2 turns), and I perceive that to reward skill over luck.  I've heard counter arguments that the race to platinum makes the game swingy etc. I don't know who is right, this was just my thinking.

It took more games than I anticipated, and I tried to ensure that I was polite to the players I was playing with, chatting, discussing strategy after the game was over etc., and I made it as high as #2 (i think).

Unfortunately, Paralyzed had the same general idea at the same time, and took it a step further, explicitly selecting a kingdom in which if you didn't know what to do, you were almost certainly going to lose.

He passed me on 9/3:  http://bggdl.square7.ch/leaderboard/leaderboard-2011-09-03.html

I already felt somewhat dirty about "cheating", and I didn't want to jump down to that level, so I retired the name, emailed Doug Z. to let him know what I had done, and suggested some possible ways that he might address ways in which leaderboard gaming was going on. (Since I didn't view conjecture as playing with more skill than Captain_Frisk)

We had a brief email exchange, and I'm not sure to what extent I influenced these changes, or if it was just Paralyzed's ridiculous ranking (65 +/- 15!) that finally pushed him over the edge to try some different variants.

On the plus side, I that the leaderboard as it stands now feels right to me.  I have losing records against most of the people at the top that I've played, and I don't have the sense that any of them are ducking games etc.  I've actually played against all of the top 10, and have no doubts that they are better than me.  I suffer from FPS (Fancy Play Syndrome) way too much to be competitive.

I agree that the current state of the leaderboard is great, and I'm really happy there are no cheaters or "cheaters" (depending on how you want to define the word I guess) up there.

Since this was bumped, I might as well report that I didn't reach jonts' rating record before having a few horrible days and dropping down to 47 :( I got to 48.777, which is pretty close. grrrrr. Next time!

Ha... I think I am also a sufferer of FPS.  On thread topic, I have been making it to lv 30 over and over for some time now.  My rating just hovers from about 27-31 these days.

On the subject of cheating, I'd say that actual cheating would either be through hacking (to my knowledge never successfully executed), or by having people throw games.

Paralyzed's approach is a close second.  It is clearly legal to do that, but I'd say its against the spirit of the leaderboard as a measure of player skill.

Assuming that neither tat or Larry had people throwing games, its really hard to call it true cheating... but avoiding high ranked players is certainly poor sportsmanship.

I really hope that commercial dominion maintains this community...

Frisk, I don't have all the details on either of those players, and it probably shouldn't be discussed like this anyway, but I'm decently sure "avoiding high ranked players" was not the extent of their.. strategy.

But yeah, while there certainly are degrees of crap (and some might not even call the whitest shades "crap" at all), I don't recognize anyone as a top player who intentionally tries to game the system, and I'm glad that (to my knowledge) players like that aren't active on (the top of) isotropic any more.

That after 40, there might be 37/38 waiting for you instead of 41, I think.

Oh, I see.  Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if I dropped down a rank, since they seem to fluctuate based on how off your day was (or how lucky you were).  Still, the general trend has been up.  Hell, at the start of the year I was under level 30.

Now that everyone's bragging... it took me ~600 games to get to 50% (>1 average win point); today (after 747 games) I got to 50% as P2 :) [table position 2   178-173-12   1.014]

Finally I got round to playing online!

I think I am holding a record whose category I just made up!

I am the highest placed player with the smallest number of games.

As in, no one is placed higher than me and played less games!

Level 11, 12 games.

i think if I had not lost one game I could have had a higher level than gamesplayed! Doh

Back up to 30 after a month-long dip in the 20s!

(The first time I hit 30 this thread didn't exist yet, so I figured I'd better get my attention-whoring in when I can.)
